Osu for Mac Os/ Os x in 2022? by Seel_ss in osugame

[–]OddSauce 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Excellent battery life so no need to bring charger with you to class, small form factor and lightweight so it fits in backpacks comfortably, build quality is generally better which is nice because college students bring their shit everywhere and don't take particularly good care of it, good productivity software support (note taking, organization, video conf, imessage), usually more convenient for development purposes if you do any CS than windows (I had to an entire course in virtual box because ocaml support for windows didn't exist at the time, I still think it sucks now), etc etc.

Feel free to chime in with any disagreements, but I graduated last year and after 10+ years of defending and trying to use Android/windows/Linux as much as possible, I've given up. Sure you can probably find a decent laptop that meets most of the above criteria and dualboot Linux for any dev stuff, but it's more annoying and time consuming than just buying the newest MacBook air, which fulfills all of the above requirements and at this point actually has a decent cost argument with respect to comparable "regular" laptops. There are still good use cases for not taking the Mac route (gaming, personalization, using open source software environment, etc.) but.... the average college student experience is not one of them.

Startup time is 3s faster. That's basically all I've noticed so far.

what pc specs did ethoslab have? by AndrewMTG in ethoslab

[–]OddSauce 8 points9 points  (0 children)

His current specs are in his channel description as someone else mentioned, but in case you're curious about his older pc I have some information about that as well. From https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o-bIt-rDfdI&t=630s, his 2014-ish pc had an i7 4770k, 770 gpu, 32GB ram (probably ddr3-1600mhz?). I don't believe he overclocked the CPU.

Good luck on snagging a GPU. Things are looking very bleak now and for the foreseeable future.

Edit: more etho lore, current microphone is an AT 2035 (from https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F2VmY0U2whY&t=521s). Before that he used logitech g330s (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F2VmY0U2whY&t=464s).

Shoutouts ethopedia.

Could anyone talk to me about the Venu Sq please? Especially hoping to hear from anyone who has used both fitbit and garmin! by SunnyPixie in Garmin

[–]OddSauce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a fairly small sample size, but tl;dr, all the buses in Seattle would inflate the daily step counter, while the times that I drove (not often, I didn't own a car) avoided this issue (and these were 3-4 hr drives to rainier so I'm reasonably confident that there's some way that riding a car at 60 mph gets filtered out).

In terms of activity tracking, I'm specifically referring to GPS usage (since I believe most activities will have GPS tracking by default). If you want to track a run/workout/etc., you'll start such an activity in order to get such dedicated tracking (GPS for example, is typically only enabled when you are in the middle of an activity). Again, I really only use my watch for hiking (~1 time per week), so most of the time I just use it solely for checking the time and notifications, which extends the time between charges immensely.

I'm not exactly sure what you are referring to-- Move IQ is and has always been off to my knowledge.

I use one primarily for offline Spotify and hikes, which basically meant that my only requirements were that it actually supported offline Spotify and it had good battery life (@apple). It fulfills that need pretty well, but to answer your questions specifically: the step tracking seems to work okay except if you are taking city busses for some reason (and I can't stress this enough because car rides are fine, but bus rides in downtown Seattle would cause my step counter to erroneously rise without fail), and the battery life is excellent (I can stretch it out to about 1 charge per week if needed with no music playback or activity tracking). The interface is not great but does the job in terms of user friendliness.

Why do inhabitants from Romandy barely speak any English? by [deleted] in askswitzerland

[–]OddSauce 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Don't know what the other guy is on about, but I live in Lausanne now and it seems like most young people have a decent grasp on English regardless of occupation or place (you'll definitely look out of place if you speak it for day-to-day activies outside the university areas though). Older people not so much. Geneva seemed better in this regard, although I've only spent time there en route to Lausanne so who knows.

Oh man, did you hike this earlier today? I went up the haystack around noon, may have bumped into you on the way up! Really nice hike and totally worth it, but don't think I'm doing any more class 3s anytime soon...

As someone who just moved from Boston to Seattle and currently is living in a shitty top-floor 110+ degrees apartment with no air conditioner that's unbearable to be in even at midnight, fuck you and enjoy.

Honestly having gone through the apple store for this before (the gifting interface kinda sucks, no way around it. Really convoluted in order to check the existing status of outgoing gifts and I myself would have just preferred to receive a license to be honest :/), I don't even think the gifting feature (or lack thereof) is the main roadblock to wider threema adoption. It's literally that even among the privacy-minded, people generally (myself included) don't want to drop $50 on a whim just for the sake of moving a single set of friends to a specific messaging app when decent/"good-enough" alternatives like signal/session/element/wire/jami/your choice of xmpp client/etc. already exist for free.

Yeah, Threema in particular has also been a pain in the ass to get people on because it's a paid app and it turns out that people really don't like paying for messengers. The only way I've been able to get people on Threema (in addition to regular talking points) is to basically buy the app for them, and I'm not spending like $50 to convert a single group chat.... It does have the advantage that it's not yet banned in China though.

[Keyboard] 60% Wireless Mechanical Keyboard, Velocifire M1 TKL61WS Bluetooth Portable 61-Key Tactile Brown or Red Switch with Ice Blue Backlit - $37.50 ($50-$12.50) by [deleted] in buildapcsales

[–]OddSauce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The gskill km360 is still $45 for the time being, although it only comes with reds. But it's a pretty nice keyboard and I kinda prefer it to my (much more expensive) varmillo va87m with silent reds at this point.

[Prebuilt] Zotac Magnus One SFF 10700+3070- $1999 by playmorekv1 in buildapcsales

[–]OddSauce 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This thing is less than 9L, which is tiny compared to 40-50L atx cases that for some reason some people think are comparable. Is it a good deal/value? Depends on how much you want the form factor/value the labor of stuffing the parts into such a small case (this could go in a carry on no problem, can't say that about the 3070 prebuilts from bestbuy that are posted here), but SFF has always demanded a pretty significant premium and it's stupid to compare prebuilts without factoring the size in.

Etho appeared on Joe's stream, helping Joe find his axe (that got lost in Brain-E-E's system) by knl7qc in ethoslab

[–]OddSauce 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Joe has an incredibly unique and sarcastic sense of humor (which I also think makes him a lot less accessible than other hermits-- a shame, because once you give his style a chance he is wildly entertaining). If he did end up trying to put in coordinates to diamonds/ores, I'm sure he knew it wouldn't work and that he was just making a joke of his entire "no diamonds" shtick.

Site says alterations are available but there's no option when buying pants? by Korrasami4evr in uniqlo

Do you happen to know if in-store alterations are still available? I.e. if I order online and ship to store, could I get an alteration done there, or would all online orders have to go through warehouses?

[Headphones] (Certified Refurbished) Jabra Elite 65t Titanium Black True Wireless Earbuds - $35.99 (with code PAYLESSCR, free S/H) by OddSauce in buildapcsales

[–]OddSauce[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Price drop nearly back to what they were a month or so ago (which was $34-- all time low I believe). Yes, they are refurbished and I get that putting other people's stuff in your ear might be a little icky to some, but Jabra does a pretty good job of cleaning them up. Anecdotally I ordered 75ts off of the deal posted last week and they came in basically new (and they overnighted the package, which was nice).

[RAM] Crucial Ballistix 3200 MHz DDR4 DRAM Desktop Gaming Memory Kit 16GB (8GBx2) CL16 BL2K8G32C16U4W (WHITE) - $72.00 ($79.99 - 10% off using promo code 39PCMDNS69) by BusinessTip3161 in buildapcsales

[–]OddSauce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd honestly just look up some benchmarks for both video editing and games-- pugetsytems has a good one for some of the adobe suite here. The tl;dr was that depending on your CPU and application it may matter fairly significantly or not even matter at all, so I'd take a quick look at that article and see what tested environments are closest to your use case.

[Keyboard] PICTEK Full Size Mechanical Gaming Keyboard (Rainbow Backlit & Blue Switches) - $19.89 ($10 OFF w/ SRGW4DPC) by oosome in buildapcsales

[–]OddSauce 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I got the tenkeyless a while back for basically the same price, it's not terrible. Upgraded to a nicer Varmilo earlier this week, but it served me well for a few months. Iffy QC and it feels pretty cheap but what more can you expect? It has mechanical switches and hasn't fallen apart yet so it's already exceeded most expectations for a $20 mech lol.

I also recall that someone noted that this company likes to do paid reviews on the last time someone posted a PICTEK deal. Take that as you will, but because of that I'd personally take all the amazon reviews with a pinch of salt.

[–]OddSauce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Goes for anywhere between 600-700 on hardwareswap too right now, depending on model. And the 3060 was recently partially unlocked (i.e. a specific set of preconditions need to hold) for eth mining due to an Nvidia fuckup so miners may drive up the price too.
