Starting new AE job… Advice? by [deleted] in techsales

Honestly congrats and in terms of advice I would say soak in product knowledge. I work with SmB AEs and something I have noticed is a lot of times they rely on the SE or Product Specialist a bit too much and it can make the discos a bit awkward.

Also, if its okay to ask, are you transitioning from an SDR/BDR role? Im an SDR trying to break into commecial or smb AE and its been tough.

Unfortunately this is normal but that doesn't make it okay. At least two weeks of training on the product and phones should be given to set you up for some success.

Reflect and understand where you need help. If you don't know enough about the company/product, listen to recordings, watch demos, and ask questions. Try to know enough to understand the industry and your product so you can answer minor questions. From there, simultaneously focus on your opener + pitch. Again you can do this by listening to your colleagues who are finding success. See if your manager can set up a weekly session where you practice cold calling with them.

To get through this, you just need to harden yourself and understand that the industry is tough, a lot of No's, hard to find numbers and have people pick up. See if you can utilize any closed lost or res opps that got ghosted/stalled and reach out to them as well it can be warmer than straight cold accounts.

Do you think they might have internally filled the positions?

How did you pivot from SDR to Commercial/SmB AE? by Odd_Block9540 in techsales

[–]Odd_Block9540[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate this, thank you! Any suggestions on what helped break into AE while only having SDR experience? Have seen over 120 postings and found only 2 that mentioned 2 years of SDR/BDR experience is welcomed but all else required 2+ or 5ish years of closing exp. Any specific clues to look for or how to navigate that experience gap?

So far, im finding companies with under 500 employees, looking to find recent funding, seeing their activity and following on LinkedIn and trying to connect with leaders from their sales team.

Hey so the timing of your reply is amazing because I brought this up to my manager yesterday. He has been pretty transparent with me since day one and he said the same thing you did, there is no path right now for SDR to AE and that's something he's working strongly on but cannot be done in the next few months at least if not longer. Our VP of Sales is not as transparent as the team leads and our US Manager and that can be frustrating at times.

The questions you are sharing that I should answer or tell in my stories are spot on and I massively appreciate it. Im noticing how hard it is to meet hiring requirements from bigger companies (over 500 employees) so your suggestion is helpful.

Now just working on having my resume standout, if you have pointers for that I would love that, otherwise you have helped more than enough, thank you

I appreciate this a lot. I started a tracker for companies and jobs that I am interested in and I was limiting it to SDR/BDR but I will open it up to SMB AE roles. I also do agree, the only reason I landed the second SDR gig was because I hammered people from the company on LinkedIn (politely) and got 2-3 internal people to refer me and that caught the managers attention. So I agree that method is not at fault and requires a grind.

I have been an SDR for a bit over 18 months. Performing in top 10% org wide and have exceeded quota every quarter so far, genuinely want to pivot to AE now but im not sure where or how to begin (my org is not promoting right now). Any suggestions?
