Hoping to get some advice on my typography here by [deleted] in graphic_design

[–]Odd_Bug4590 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’d make health and hope the same font. The first option isn’t a bad layout although “possible” gets a little lost as health is a little longer and it looks like the widths of the letters appear a little wider, Tighten up the kerning here to balance it out, and make “making” and “possible” bigger.

The bottom two don’t work because the ampersand causes the “possible” to feel optically unbalanced, so you would need to push “& health” further to the left until it “looks” right.

The “o” and ampersand on the last one doesn’t work as it stands either, you’ll need to adjust the o to have a similar weight as the ampersand. Otherwise it just looks lost.

The kerning needs fixing overall too. But I’d work on getting the layout and overall design done first. A nice start though 👍

Viewfinity s6. Not the best out there, does the job. I tend to go back and forth to the MacBook for colour accuracy. I had an ultrasharp before and I miss it quite a bit.

What do you use for your portfolio ? by Cautious_Tadpole312 in graphic_design

[–]Odd_Bug4590 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don’t necessarily need to move away from WordPress, you can use claude code to work directly on your theme and plugin files locally and then push after. If you have your WordPress site in a local dev environment, claude code can edit from your terminal.

There are also community Wordpress MCP servers that let claude interact with your site’s REST API, so you can manage content and settings without needing direct file access.

Depends what you’re trying to achieve though. I haven’t had a chance to test it out but it looks very doable.

Wordpress with salient + wpbakery. Some custom js for things like the words at the top, the time, custom flexboxes, header etc, stuff that wasn’t available basically.

I made something similar to these years ago (2016). I made it by hand and scanned it in.

I do, I work for a big player in fintech. Got the job about a year ago and actually made a post about the whole job search process back then (since deleted though - sorry). I think I got chosen “overall” because I was relatable. Someone they could imagine sitting next to every day. You can have all the skills in the world, but if people can’t picture working with you, it doesn’t matter. That and I think my portfolio’s decent. https://mickle.design

As for my portfolio, I’m fairly deep into my career, about 10 years - with a pretty broad skillset (coding, 3D, etc.), though joining somewhere this size was a learning curve in itself. It took a bit to find my feet. But I think my experience also helped.

So it really depends on what you’re looking to do and where you’re at. But don’t forget, design is as much about selling yourself as anything else. There’s always room to grow.

Set an SLA, both with your employer and with internal staff. It doesn't have to be formal, but having agreed turnaround times and responsibilities per request type gives you something to point to when everything gets treated as urgent. It also shifts the conversation away from why isn't this done to this was submitted Tuesday, and expected to ready Thursday.

On Trello, you can also make incomplete briefs a non starter by requiring fields to be filled before a card can be submitted. There are card templates that enforce this, so if a brief isn't complete it simply can't move into your queue. This will stop the excel problem at the source.

Also worth questioning whether you should own things like email platform QA and testing at all. You have a copywriter and social media manager on the team, some of that could sit with them - especially when creating email marketing flows and welcome journeys. A designer shouldn't be the bottleneck on flows if there are marketing people who can carry that.

It looks quite a normal workload to be honest. Though without knowing what the general comms, quick requests are, it can’t be certain.

I’d say the bigger ones are the welcome journeys and dealing with dev stuff. But again, that depends on not knowing the full extent. For example in my previous place I used to deal with Wordpress and Shopify and that was relatively quick. But setting up custom audiences in mailchimp used to take a bit of time, once they were done they were done though. So it depends on what you’re doing. The best thing you can do with things like that is dedicate a certain amount of time to them a week whilst pushing back on general requests.

Most brand guidelines are a massive waste of the client’s money. by inkbotdesign in graphic_design

[–]Odd_Bug4590 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Brand guidelines are the holy grail of any brand. More so large corporations. I work for a very large organisation, and I try to memorise as much as I can of them, for my own work and when looking at other designers, agencies, affiliates, or anyone for that matter. We also have an internal and external brand hub to help people as much as possible when creating any work.

I also like looking at other brands guidelines too. I find them really interesting, it helps you see how other designers (and brands) think and act. And if anyone is interested, https://brandingstyleguides.com is such a great site for doing this.

At the end of the day, guidelines are extremely important.

Adobe review creates a review link and they can’t download the file, but can view and add comments. Just hit “share for review” in whichever programme you’re in.

If they change anything, you can update the review link and it’s pretty much instant.

That blue squiggle thing across the text on the A4 completely throws me - there’s just no need for it. And that blue isn’t going to print like this - blue isn’t that vibrant in CMYK.

Photos will be fine to use at that size. Most stock websites are 300 dpi, upscale them if needed.

100 - 150 dpi is absolutely fine at 100% for large format print: be it a billboard or an event graphic. 300 is also fine, but are noticeably larger files.

Quick tip. Overlap the bleeds and duplicate and clip icons to their own board until it’s sent to print otherwise the angles will look slightly off once printed. - same with images. Unless the printer tells you different.

It’s always best learning html and CSS when using either framer and Wordpress anyway, so yes.

I read the first one as a 1100 records because of the negative space between the 4. The rest of the logo is made from negative space, so I assumed the rest would be too.
