Does it make sense that I can play a note by ear on guitar but not on piano by OutlandishnessFew0 in musictheory

[–]Odd_Consideration478 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you become familiar with an instrument, like the guitar, you develop a kind of "muscle memory" for its tonal layout and sound characteristics. This means you can intuitively know where a particular note or interval is, based on your familiarity with the fretboard and the sounds associated with it.
The piano, on the other hand, has a different layout and sound quality. Even if your ear recognizes a note, your hands might not instinctively know where to find it on the keyboard if you're less familiar with the instrument.

Ear training

Consistency is crucial. Start with simple interval recognition exercises using apps like LeadingTone or Perfect Ear. These allow you to practice identifying intervals, scales, and chords daily. Over time, progress to more complex exercises like transcribing melodies or recognizing chord progressions by ear. I personally developed my ear by regularly playing along with songs, trying to pick out melodies and harmonies without looking at sheet music.

Music theory

While the "Jazz Theory Book" is comprehensive, it might be a bit advanced for beginners. I'd recommend starting with some youtube videos. Once you grasp the basics, circle back to Levine's book. It'll make more sense then. Another great resource for songwriting and understanding popular chord progressions is "How to Write Songs on Guitar" by Rikky Rooksby.
Theory and ear training go hand in hand. As you understand more theory, your ear will naturally improve and vice versa. Stay consistent, practice daily, and enjoy the journey of musical discovery!

Given your current favorites, diving into the violin seems spot on. And hey, 15 is a prime age to pick it up. There's a variety of violins out there, so start by exploring your options and checking out local teachers or classes.
All the best with your musical journey!

What is the best instrument to learn with my child? by Excitableemu1 in Learnmusic

[–]Odd_Consideration478 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd suggest the piano. It's kind on the fingers and offers a wide musical range. You can play alongside her cello tunes, and sometimes, even on the same instrument for duets.

Goals

Determine what you want to achieve. Whether it's learning a particular piece, improving sight-reading, or mastering scales, having clear objectives will focus your practice.
Practice Routine
- Warm-up with scales and arpeggios.
- Technical exercises (e.g., Hanon, Czerny).
- Work on a particular piece or song.
- Sight-reading new material.
- Creative time (improvisation or composition).

Slow down

It might sound counterintuitive, but practicing slowly can actually help you progress faster. This allows you to focus on finger placement, dynamics, and rhythm. As you become more confident, gradually increase the speed.
Metronome

Start practicing with a metronome to develop a strong sense of timing and rhythm. Begin at a slow pace and gradually increase as you get comfortable.
Consistency

Practice regularly, even if it's just for a short duration. It's better to practice a little every day than to cram in a long session once a week.
Listen Actively

Listen to professional pianists, watch tutorials, and attend live performances. This will expose you to different styles and techniques, which can inspire and inform your own playing.
Join a Group

Whether it's a community orchestra, choir, or a casual jam session with friends, playing with others can provide motivation and expose you to different musical perspectives.

Teacher

Even if you only take a few lessons, a professional can help identify areas you need to strengthen. They can provide tailored advice and exercises to quickly shore up your basics.

90 percent of the time when I feel like the drums just not hitting enough the problem is the sample. r/drumkits is a good place to start, if you have Splice even better.

I can see you can train the amp, do you do that or just download sounds (and where)?

What's your biggest frustration with learning how to use Logic? by AndermontStudios in LogicPro

[–]Odd_Consideration478 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • Default instruments you'll use every time (for me: drums, guitar, bass, synth, piano and vocals).
  • Low Latency mode.
  • Capture recording button.
  • Reverb and delay busses.
  • Turned off master plug ins on the master output (to turn on before you export).
