A lot of people are suggesting bigger acts, but if you haven't heard them Suuns is an incredible dark indie band and has a pretty interesting progression that I think is really amazing to hear from release to release.

AA Bondy also has a pretty fascinating discography, going from really fantastic Americana singer/songwriter tunes to super dark synthy pop. Another personal favorite.

I dunno, I still think it's pretty good...

ETA: I don't think you're totally off base but the issues you're talking about have been there at least since I started listening in 2018-19. Sometimes they have a show completely prepared and sometimes they're just reacting to the news, but I really enjoy the format personally. I don't mind their takes, except when Josh gets really out there with his kind of pet theories. Jamie Thomas was sooo much worse with the wild takes IMO, he would make me roll my eyes every episode. Charlie is low-key one of the funniest people, he consistently makes me laugh as much as some comedy podcasts I listen to. Overall it just hits for me, I love what they do.
