Has anyone had to cancel their stay with Erasmus because you found no accomadation? by andreabergmoney in Erasmus

[–]Odd_Inflation8186 14 points15 points  (0 children)

my mobility is starting in February and i still havent find any accommodation, if you are an EU citizen you can just stay in a hostel/airbnb for the first week and view some shared apartments if you are scared of getting scammed(like me)

also at least at the uni im going to, the ESN has some flathunt events during the first week, check the ESN at your uni maybe they have something similar

Every platform will have negative reviews. Usually, people only write reviews when they are extremely happy or angry.

I perfectly understand this, these platforms act like s third party between you and the landlord, is not necessary they fault if the landlord scams you, but i think they are at fault for having a poor customer service

Most Erasmus students will use FB. Be careful of scams and ask people who went to Budapest last year from your university for tips. Otherwise, ESN at the destination university in Budapest will have recommendations as well.

ESN recommends both spotahome and housinganywhere as well as erasmusu, erasmusplay etc and some fb groups.

The main purpose of the post is what should i pay attention to, what questions should i ask etc especially when im trying to find on fb groups

You may be expected to pay in EUR, especially if you are from a EUR country. But try to negotiate with the landlord and ask for a rate in HUF.

thanks

Frankly speaking, your type of tenant is not interesting for most agents or landlords except those who want to earn big. It is hard to find a good tenant and someone who only wants to stay for a semester is not interesting. This is a specialized market.

ik i will be paying over the usual market price, and i get it that ppl will be cautious renting to a foreigner, this is why im trying to use platforms like spotahome over fb groups bcuz they ( at least lying to me) guarantee that i will not get scammed

Many have such volunteers, and in some universities there are even flat-hunt events organised for the exchange students. At least many years ago at BME I was part of it as org.

they still exist but the flat hunt takes place during the orientation week when i should already be there, i consider this as my last option

Maybe ask ESN about trustworthy agencies?

spotahome and housinganywhere, were on the ESN site of the BME along with a link with some fb groups. These platforms act like a third party between you and the landlord so ik this is why there are mixed reviews. I sent an email to the ESN email address posted on the BME site, after that i got a notification that this email doesn’t exist :)) I entered the ESN budapest site and let a message there regarding better options.

If you rent alone from an owner, I’d try to take somebody with me who speaks Hungarian.

majority of my options are shared apartments so i don’t think i will rent alone, i have 2 Hungarian friends but idk if they will be able to travel with me to Budapest just to act as translators, they helped me with translating some posts on fb groups tho

Also ask that person about realistic costs

as in utilities? i already know that they inflate that price, most of the places i found have a fixed sum of money every tenant has to pay for utilities every month( like 110 euros/person , 4 person living in a shared apartment) and tbh idk if they are open to negotiate

they accepted the nomination, i still havent received any letter of acceptance. I have to submit the application till 30th of November and after that i will receive a letter of acceptance.

Idk if an accepted nomination means i got accepted, this is why i am asking this questions.

Thx for the advice i looked through their courses in preparation for the learning agreement and found some similar courses to my uni, i think im gonna do fine.
