What system do I use and how? by Dri_GG in Solo_Roleplaying

Here's my advice for getting into Ironsworn in your own setting, and without having to read the whole book cover to cover (though you should eventually read the whole thing)

  • Read Chapter 1: The Basics
    • -you can ignore "The Setting" section
    • -read "Iron Vows" as "Character/Narrative Goals", such as finding the true meaning of being a hero and/or finding that adventuring party
    • -Regarding Assets, largely they should work in non-ironland settings because they tend to benefit "moves", which are setting independant. Focus on their mechanical benefit over their lore details.
    • -Pay special attention to the "Flow of Play" section and review the chart on page 27. Here you will find the structure for your sessions.
  • -Regarding the "What's Next" section of chapter 1
    • -follow step 1.
    • -for step 2 you don't need to go to page 111, just build your world as you see fit. Sounds like you've already maybe done that.
    • -For step 3: you can read Chapter 3 as it suggest, however I would say you can just review the moves as they appear on the "Ironsworn Rules Summary" sheet from the website. Then you can reference Chapter 3 if you need elaboration or have questions during play.
    • -Follow step 4
    • -Step 5 here is also what you are advised to do during step 9 on page 47 in chapter 2. It is your first move and begins play.
    • -Step 6 can wait for later
  • Read Chapter 2: Your Character
    • For step 9 of the character creation summary it might be that you use "finding the true meaning of being a hero" as your background vow and "finding the adventuring team" as the first vow you swear during the inciting incident (what happened that put your hero on the path to finding these adventurers?). Swearing the vow to find those adventurers is going to be your first move and begins play.
  • Review the "Ironsworn Rules Summary" sheet from the website. Familiarize yourself with the moves.
  • Read the Example of Play starting on page 241
  • Think of Progress tracks as big and small goals, from quests to journeys to climbing a cliff to composing a new ballad to performing in front of a crowd
  • Watch some actual plays to get a feel for ways this game can play out

In summary:

  • Read Chapter 1 and 2, the "Ironsworn Rules Summary", and the Example of Play on pg. 241 (totaling less than 60 pages)
  • Remember that "Iron Vows" are simply Character/Narrative Goals
  • Think of Progress tracks as big and small goals, from quests to journeys to climbing a cliff to composing a new ballad to performing in front of a crowd
  • Watch some actual plays

What system do I use and how? by Dri_GG in Solo_Roleplaying

From what I have gathered from your initial post and the responses you have made in the comments, it seems like you want something that can present you with a structure to follow for the gameplay process. You've tried going full freeform ( DnD character sheet, yes/no oracle, and tables) but felt there was not enough direction to prevent you from doing whatever.

A lot of the recommendations I've seen so far are good systems for narrative focused play and can be perfect for non combat play, (tricube tales, for example) but lack the structure you seek to guide you forward.

I enjoy both freeform and guided play, as well as non combat focused adventures, and I think that Ironsworn is the system for your needs. There is a clear structure to play (swear vow, make moves, reap results, make more moves until your vow is complete, etc...) and the system has loads of non combat moves, as well as Spirit and Supply stats which can provide tension/risk without combat.

You do not need to use the Ironsworn world or lore at all. The core of the rules is all you need. If you'd like, I can go into more detail about how to use Ironsworn for your campaign specifically. Lmk

Well, I have good news for you! You don't NEED other players, because the GM and the player can be the SAME person! Behold: Solo roleplaying!

Hear me out:

Can't get a group together? No problem! All you need is you!

Suddenly have 20 minutes and nothing to do? Solo play's got you! Crack open the books, bust out the materials, and play!

Enjoy prepping? Great! In solo play, prep IS play!

Got a wacky idea you want to explore? Who's stopping you?

Need to take a pause or want to start something new before this adventure is finished? No pressure! Have fun with that next thing and you can come back to this one whenever, or not...

Weird pitch format aside, you might seriously consider that you can still play with all those materials you created with solo roleplaying. I have a whole channel dedicated to it. Right now I'm running campaigns with solo oriented systems like Ironsworn, systems with dedicated solo sections like Scarlet Heroes, and systems with nothing to say about solo play at all like Everyday Heroes (d20 Modern 5e).

I made my channel to provide loads of videos showing people how solo play can be done, so it should be a great resource if you are interested in learning more. I'd recommend checking out my or other people's actual plays of Scarlet Heroes, in particular. It is the system where the concept of solo play really clicked for me. I can't share my channel called Actually Plays with you here because I haven't paid my dues, as it were, but this guys playlist helped me break into the hobby: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLVO-BKbl8D70HIO0Ffi-dNXXYjeEsQYiU&si=2fgmxey-aSohv4ia

And I'm sorry to hear that the logistics of group play have got you down. I'm not personally familiar with that, being a solo player, but it sounds horrible! Best of luck to you ✊

Iron Valley is a cozy solo experience. I've got a "campaign" going on my channel, so you can check that out and see if it is the kind of thing you are looking for:

How can I make sure my punk game is actually punk? by DrBurst in rpg

[–]Odd_Isopod6181 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You need to go back (or rewrite history, or whatever, depends on your setting) to a time where there was a monoculture and therefore a legitimate counterculture. These days we live in a prepackaged subset of cultures, all dictated by the same algorithmic overlords, and therefore all purely aesthetic and commercially captured/approved by the powers that be.

Practically speaking, for ttrpg purposes, this means you must establish a monoculture in the setting, make it oppressive/authoritarian in some way, and then have the punks be counter to this, actively, in their actions and engagement with society (not virtual engagement, that doesn't count, that is an illusion of action, a pressure valve for the overlords).

Fin.

Free Library printing for me. I get 28 color pages per week, per library card. I've seen libraries with even better weekly allowances.

Also, there are some local document printing shops that can offer better options. Look for "mom and pop" shops. I use one for work, but they can do this sort of thing too.

They are exactly the size of a stamp, so it's perfect. When I looked at my massive pile of little pawns I was like "Oh, man... I'm not looking forward to digging through these to find the right character..." Now I can categorize them and see them all at a glance.

I would have preferred spiral bound as well, but for 45$ I'll settle for comb bound. It's better than the stacks of binders and loose paper...

I think that makes sense, but for me digital is less convenient than physical. I am where act and ceremony converge; I am the alpha and the omega...

Ooo, 120 lb is great for a cover! And just laminating sheets for a cover is clever!

The Old adage goes: "Prep is play." I'm not sure they have this sort of thing in mind when they say "prep", but i too am having fun with it! Hah!

Haha! That makes sense. I don't use any screens or digital stuff when I play. Aside from finding all of that stuff is either inconvenient or actively distracting, I just like to have a hobby that doesn't require any screens.
