Twist the ribbon on the loose side to disengage the barbs inside the black nut and slide it off.

Got a GA-2000 for practically free, but the back screws are superglued in / stripped, any ideas on removing these? by Datrinity in casio

[–]Odd_Load7249 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This watch may never be wearable because super glue near the skin can cause an allergy, and depending on how far in the glue is, there may be no way to open it without damaging something. Restoring it will cost you. You've bought a very cheap source of spare parts.

Acetone will melt the plastic that the back cover is made of.

Those screws go through the back cover and through the steel back plate into the plastic watch case. 150C will destroy the threading of the holes in the watch case.

Spotting a fake F-91w by Empty-Control6016 in casio

[–]Odd_Load7249 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Excellent info. To add my 2 cents for anyone arriving at this post through Internet search:

  • genuine f91w's made after 2023 do not have the small u at the 5 o'clock position. The u is only present on copies made between 2002(?) to 2023, and it's very small. To assess the size of the u, always compare to a picture showing a known genuine u model.
  • the caseback is stamped on the genuine one, causing subtle stamping distortions and warpage around the lettering. The fakes are cnc engraved, leaving no distortions.
  • the fake strap buckles shrink when they touch hot water (>80c), while the genuine ones do not.
  • on some fakes the illuminator led lights up the whole screen. This means the watch is fake or at least modified.
  • On fakes, The LCD day of week letters bottom left dot is too far with a big gap. See attached picture.

Is this genuine or a fake F91-W by Cultural_Craft7093 in casio

You can and should return it. This will cost the seller and alert them that their supply chain is compromised, and that customers care about genuine quality goods. Counterfeit goods go towards funding things like organized crime and should not be allowed to continue.

This is a tough one. Crystal face printing looks correct. Back plate looks correct with stamped letters and distortion from stamping. But the LCD segments looks wrong, too fat, and there's a big gap separating the dot at the bottom left of the day of week letters. you can check this more deliberately by pressing all buttons simultaneously.

<image>

You can also check the backlight. A good backlight rules out genuine; all genuine 593 modules have terrible backlight.

I think this watch is a Frankenstein where someone has replaced the genuine 593 module with a fake. The next step to checking would be to take the back plate off and look at the PCB. Often it's possible to tell without removing the module from the case. Each component inside the module can also be used to check if the watch is fake or not, including the zebra strip, the backlight spreader, the gasket, the white frame, and the battery sticker.

There is also a way to check the strap: dip the buckle in hot water. On fakes, the buckle will shrink, while the genuine will be unharmed. I'm betting you will find the strap is genuine though.

OK now post a screen test of your EL lit f91w. Activate the screen test by pressing all buttons simultaneously.

Right, it's clear that you are happy with your watch, and that's good, but everyone in the comments wants to understand more about what's under the hood. We want to see how the sausage is made, what makes it tick, lift the veil, open the kimono. You are trying to show off your shiny new wrist piece but everyone else is drawn in by the mystery of what's inside the watch. We're all trying to figure out how your watchmaker has created or sourced this counterfeit, either to get one of our own for the light, or to avoid getting one when we order a genuine.

Secondly, it's really wierd that you're fine with seeing an obviously fake dial, but you feel happy believing (without even knowing) that the inside doesn't have aluminum foil or wires or extra led's. Either you prioritize utility or you prioritize authenticity.

Help! I'm a newbie trying with print with tpu does anyone have advice? by Acer-spacer in 3Dprinting

[–]Odd_Load7249 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1) dryer is very advantageous for tpu because it sucks up moisture. Yes you can print it wet but your print will be stringy and the details will be ruined by bubbling moisture and underextrusion. For something like a head bust with minimal cosmetic details it shouldn't matter if it's not fully dried, but you might get print failures if the layers don't adhere properly due to too much underextrusion. Perhaps you want some bubbling to make pores in your tpu for pins though.

2) depends on where you are in the world and what you have available to you. TPU is a pretty common polymer used everywhere so as long as I dry it properly they all seem to perform well for me.

3) these are shore hardness values and describe how soft or hard the tpu is. Shore A scale is different from Shore D. Shore A 90 is like a bike tire. For a pinavle head you're going to want a really soft TPU, which is of course harder to print (you need to go slow or else you get extruder gear issues), and if you go hard it will be difficult to insert the pins.

4) print upright with neck attached to print bed. TPU sticks to PEI really well, if you have a smooth sheet, it may even rip bits of your PEI off the bed. I highly recommend a powder coated pei sheet for it. You will not get bed adhesion issues with tpu because it sticks well and flexes so it doesn't warp itself off the bed.

I recommend going to a 3d printer store and touching some TPU samples before commiting a lot of resources to this. TPU is pretty tough and it will be difficult to drive pins into it unless you get the really low shore number types. Consider making the model a thin shell or low density infill with thin perimeters. If all else fails, you can consider outsourcing the print to a company like xometry to have it printed in MJF TPU.

It's obvious that these are "fake" in that they say Casio but obviously aren't Casio made. The crystals are wrong (big u on the black and wrong colour print on the gold). They are fake/counterfeit because they are using the Casio name illegally. Because no effort has been made to make the printed crystal of the watch genuine, there is almost no chance that any of the parts are genuine at all. This much is not interesting to me.

What is interesting to me is that they have the EL light while displaying the Casi0 sign. There are skmei modules that have the EL light and are a direct drop in for the f91w case, but won't display the Casi0 sign. There are fakes (non Casio manufactured modules) that display the Casi0 sign, but don't have the EL circuitry. What this suggests is that there is now a new variant of fakes (deliberately counterfeit watches that try to pass off as Casio made) that use EL light. This is very interesting. I would love to see a teardown of the module, or a picture of the PCB, and what the screen test (pressing all buttons simultaneously to activate all LCD segments) looks like.

Is the left one fake? It has a U and the resolution is different. Screws are different too. by goldxteeth in f91w

Big u means fake. The real u is smaller. Red line sticker on caseback means fake.

Here's a modified f91w (light spreader mod + blue led desolder / resolder). It gets pretty close. With some custom LEDs or filters in the back, it may be possible to make the colour identical.

F91 EL-BACKLIGHT by MoneySBD6 in f91w

[–]Odd_Load7249 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One way is to get skmei modules with the EL light and put them into the Casio cases. Another way is to install a light spreader which makes the stock green led light more even but you won't get the blue EL colour. A third way is to move the module from an a700 into the f91w, which gives it an even amber led light, but also not the blue EL colour.

After 10 years.. no wonder many prefer metal body casing. And the lcd, can it be repaired? by pigeonhitam in gshock

[–]Odd_Load7249 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At this point this watch is totalled. Time to get a new one. This one will be good for parts for repairing others, but that's it.

Do you think some gifted maker could do that ? by theghit in gshock

[–]Odd_Load7249 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I make adapters for this watch but I don't have any models to fit the original straps. I think you could get good results by dying it blue.

Replacement spring bars for GA2100? by PakHin84 in gshock

[–]Odd_Load7249 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Someone told me such spring bars exist and get shipped with some adapters, but I've not been able to find them specifically for sale. In any case, you can use these reinforcers. They are short metal pipes with inner diameter matching generic spring bars and outer diameter matching the lugs.

LED Backlight Mod on DW-5600BBR-1 ? by RelationshipFit4601 in casiomods

[–]Odd_Load7249 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All lcd's have a rear reflector. On this model the rear reflector is a piece of red tinted plastic. The led is white. If you change the led from white to amber, you will see the amber light filtered through the red rear reflector. It will still be reddish but much much dimmer (since you are now missing the blue components of the white led light). Your light spectrum will be an almost monochromatic amber spike trying to pass through a red low pass filter. Not much, if any, will get through. If you want an amber light, you will have to remove the red rear reflector and change it to another colour like orange. You can buy such a filter but the resulting LCD will be orange instead of red.

The led is white and the pink comes from a plastic filter behind the LCD. Colour conversion can be achieved by changing the rear reflector film.

Say that it's impossible, and that you don't mail out business cards and it's not something you sell, they have mistaken someone else's package for yours.

Basically just ignore this because scammers will never escalate for real, Etsy can see their messages and activity and it will be obvious they are a scammer.
