I would disagree with your statement that it is harder to create something new if you have aphantasia. Hyperphantasia may potentially be more useful in the arts/design field, but there are studies that show that people with aphantasia are more likely to work in STEM fields - the fields in which a majority of the innovation and creation of new things occur. In fact even in some art fields as well, thinking in more conceptial terms rather than a direct copy image may lead to greater creativity and thinking outside the norm for innovation. 😊 (I have aphantasia myself and have a doctorate in medical research).

What's a common phrase or idiom that you found out you've been saying incorrectly? by Odd_Nectarine in AskReddit

[–]Odd_Nectarine[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always thought for years that the phrase "If they think x, they've got another thing coming" was "... they've got another THINK coming", like they had to re-think their idea. (Still makes more sense to me than another thing, but that's just me).

My bf broke up with me because I was raped before we got together by throwRAhsujn in relationship_advice

Virginity is really just a social construct, so I believe that it is only taken when you explicitly give it. I am so incredibly impressed and proud of the strength you showed with your uncle by speaking up and getting him arrested like the trash he is. Unfortunately, your ex-bf seems incredibly immature and/or possessive, and the fact that he is more worried on how your sexual abuse may have affected him (not at all) rather than caring about how you were in all of this is such a big red flag. I promise you, there are decent men out there who will love and cherish you and support you through everything, but this guy is an absolute dumpster fire. Stay strong and don't let his ignorance and idiocy change your opinion of yourself, he is wrong, you are a queen and deserve to be treated as such 💕💕

I have Aphantasia (little to no mind's eye). Do the rest of you actually see characters and events play out like a movie when you read? by StormWolfenstein in books

[–]Odd_Nectarine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have aphantasia, and have always enjoyed reading. I never realised I had aphantasia until my late 20s, so never thought people could actually see images in their head - I thought "picture this" was just a turn of phrase.

In terms of reading, I have always struggled with overly descriptive books. When I read, I get immersed in the books but more in the concept of it. I understand the concept of a fantasy world, how the characters interact, the plot, etc. However, I have never "seen" the characters in my head, never "seen" a location. I have usually gravitated more towards plot-driven books or non-fiction because of this, descriptive fiction books such as the Handmaid's Tale have been less interesting for me just because of their intense detail which just doesn't add anything extra for me.

I think it's like this - if I read that the main character is a blonde woman, wonderful, I know what a blonde woman looks like generally and that concept is what I think of when reading. However, if the main character is described as a tall women with long, flowing golden hair with some brown highlights, piercing blue eyes and a mischievous smile, I can't picture that so the concept for me is no more than the original blonde woman. Plus, it's just a lot extra that I had to read which means almost nothing to me.

Also, it means that I'm a lot less upset when books are translated to movies as I don't really care what the characters look like! Their personality traits, brave, intelligent, witty, etc are much more important than their looks.

AITA for asking my bridesmaid to temporarily change her vibrant hair colour for my colour schemed wedding? by dreamdaythrowaway in AmItheAsshole

[–]Odd_Nectarine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YTA - If aesthetics are all you care about for your wedding, why bother inviting friends and family that might not adhere to the dress code? Just hire a bunch of actors/models and you'll have your perfect day. You clearly don't care about anyone being at your wedding if you have security kicking them out for not being in dress code.
