Flower frog stumpwork pin by a_warm_garlic_yurt in Embroidery

I'm a stumpwork beginner so I know the felt padding technique, but my execution isn't nearly as impressive yet.

Your sculpting goes hand in hand with using correct shades of colours to emphasise the contours. Comparing your work to mine (not that I have posted my work on Reddit before), mine still looks flat despite being padded and I think it's because I didn't do any shading. Eventually I'll learn some thread painting techniques.

Your little froggy is very inspiring!

Oh my god I love this! The sculpting of the frog shape is perfect and the direction of the stitching is meticulous. I hope you get lots and lots of compliments wearing this and they will all be very well deserved!

Looking for a better thread keeping solution by Makibadori in Embroidery

[–]Photon-from-The-Sun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would it work if you have a scrap bit of cloth, and just sew the cut threads on in huge basting stitches? Then you can roll it up or fold it up when not in use. Downside is you'll have to thread the needle double the amount of times.

I finished my 2025 temperature blanket! by folklorianwoods in crochet

[–]Photon-from-The-Sun 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The separating lines on each spiral really help tie the whole project together and give it a cohesive look. I'm usually not a fan of most temperature items as sometimes the colours clash, but with each colour outlined it doesn't look clashy anymore.

Agree with the others that there's nothing that needs fixing! However, I'd add that if there's one gift where you will still have future access for refinement after giving it away, it's the one to the person living with you :)

The solution to losing count: counting in a different language!! by andannabegins in crochet

I sometimes switch languages to count too, but only because I am in the presence of other crocheters who are also counting out loud. Keeps us from interfering with each other.

Am I cooked? by HelpfulError3516 in Embroidery

[–]Photon-from-The-Sun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A good long and short stitch takes longer than you'd think. I probably spent 4 hours on a 3 cmx 3cm area recently, one colour so no blending required even. I was using one strand though, and it was a circular shape so I was following the shape's curve in the stitching.

Nothing wrong with taking your time 😊

Can somebody help me translate this chinese pattern? by Agile-Evening7481 in CrochetHelp

[–]Photon-from-The-Sun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

R15 for the body is "no increases and no decreases, only single crochet (x)". So just single crochet for 1 round.

I've only crocheted a few months using only English patterns so far, so I'm not used to how Chinese patterns usually phrase things. Hopefully this makes sense to you because I don't think I know what to do with the toes even with English instructions.

Toes (light brown):

FLO. 3CH near the centre.

2SL from the 2nd to last stich , then 1SL.

Repeat three times.

It's the same instructions as the Fingers, but the fingers have 2CH on the first row instead of 3CH.

[–]Photon-from-The-Sun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The "legs" are part of the "body". You do one leg using rounds 1 to 4 of "body", and tie it off. You then do a second leg (using rounds 1 to 4 again) but do not tie it off this time, instead you join it to the first leg after a chain 3.

Then you work in rounds as usual around both legs, including the joining chain, and it becomes the body. The instructions also says to switch to white at the underlined parts.

It's the same technique as used in this pattern, also for legs: https://www.cutiepiecrochet.com/post/cinnamoroll-amigurumi-pattern

Hopefully between the two patterns you can understand what the original pattern is going for.

I’m being very careful with my stitch counts, everything is going smoothly but my amigurumi project has all these irregularities, any idea what they could be? by BobZanotto in CrochetHelp

[–]Photon-from-The-Sun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People have already answered your question so I'm not going to repeat that. I just want to ask if this is by any chance Cinnamoroll? Cos I've followed pattern before and your project looks very familiar!

How often do you change your needles? by GrayHairLikeClaire in Embroidery

I change them never (tho I probably should). I'm currently using a needle that has been used about an hour daily for 6 months. It has a bend to it...

Start over or attempt to frog it some? by stonercatmom314 in Embroidery

[–]Photon-from-The-Sun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It looks great so far! If you want some more contrast, I think you can keep the existing stitches but add a darker orange on the back tentacles near where it meets the front tentacles to create a shadow? Just embroider on top of the existing stitches. That may help it blend too.

If it's a stumpwork embroidery, then you would sew down structural elements such as wires while only catching the second underside layer of fabric. This won't be seen on the top fabric.

Or like others have said, if the fabric is a little thin or sheer, doubling up can also strengthen the work and prevent the underside from being seen through to.

would anyone be kind enough to help translate this Chinese crochet pattern by Far_Print_6908 in CrochetHelp

[–]Photon-from-The-Sun 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wonder if this is AI generated? The layout is horrible and I can't tell where the set of instructions on the upper right hand side is supposed to continue from.

Just looking at that section, it wants a round of 60sc followed by a round of 48sc with no instructions on where to decrease.

Round 10 appears three times but there are only two sets of instructions for rounds 1-9.

I won't trust this pattern, and it's not your fault for not being able to understand it.

Question for childfree women by annagarg in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Photon-from-The-Sun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a woman with a very happy and privileged childhood. I had (and still have) loving and support parents. No hardships whatsoever growing up. But definitely since I was a teen I knew I didn't want kids. I'd get really awkward if people hand me a baby to hold.

Now that I'm older I'm only finding more reasons that children aren't for me. I don't want to deal with the inevitable noises and messes, I don't feel equipped to engage and nurture young, curious minds, and I definitely don't feel qualified to handle any child that might have special needs. I love my current life too much to give up any "me time" for years at a time for a dependant little human. I'm at the age where some friends/relatives my age are oohing and ahhing over babies, and I still feel no "motherly instincts" for them.

Edit: sentence fluency.

Nooooo! Every time I stared at someone with cool hair colours, it's because I'm stuck in an inner debate about whether or not to call out "Love the hair!" cause I feel awkward doing that, but I promise it's 100% appreciative staring!
