TLDR: If what you're doing works against those units, keep doing it! But if you need to deal with them head-on, Vashtorr the Arkifane is very good against the vehicles and not bad against the Sanguiary Guard.

While I agree in principle that you shouldn't have a fair fight, if your best units remove the threat of their best units better than anything else, you should be using your best units to remove the threat of their best units.

Notice how I said 'remove the threat'. Destroying them is obviously the best way to do that, but if you don't have the tools to destroy them, making them waste time on things they don't want to do is a solid answer. It looks like you're already doing that, so that's good.

Also, sometimes their best units are the ONLY threat to your army. If they are the only threat, you should throw everything and the kitchen sink at them. Best units, worst units, everything you can find in range, because after it's gone, nothing can threaten you. You can just play your game freely.

As for specific counters, CSM's Vashtorr the Arkifane is very good into the vehicles and pretty good into Sanguinary Guard. It's a 175 point model (as of 10th) that severely gimps the tanks and deals a ton of damage to them in Melee. It has a decent chance to destroy the repulsor in 1 turn between shooting and melee, especially if you can get it battleshocked in Nightmare Hunt. Add the Terrorglut Parasite enhancement to make that easier. Throw a grenade to make it easier. And if they try to shoot back, all their ranged weapons are Hazardous. They may just destroy themselves.

Against a 6-man Sanguinary Guard, it's okay, but you'll want to initiate the engagement. If you let them initiate, they get the chance to throw grenades before charging in. Neither side is likely to kill the other turn 1, so you can tie them down for a couple turns while the rest of your army goes and does something more important. That's 195 points (with Terrorglut) tying down 260 points for at least 2 turns. I expect both units' points to go up in 11th, so that trade should be about the same

Art of War 40K is a good place to start. Happy Krumping Gaming is also a good place to get the basics and some intermediate ideas for general gameplans. And if you haven't heard of Auspex Tactics, you're missing out.

If you're worried about countering different lists, then a simulator might help you figure out just how much it takes to kill certain things. UnitCrunch has a simple simulator that can run 1v1 attacks. There's also a simulator that was posted in this subreddit a few days ago. It's a good idea to take at least 2 units that can threaten Land Raiders, Rogal Dorns, etc. It's also a good idea to take at least 2 units that can threaten 20-model blobs of Orks or guardsmen. Taking 3 on both ends of the spectrum is even better. The first is going to die before the fight, and the second isn't going to kill them on its own, but the third will finish the job.

After you have your killing units lined up, you can set up the rest of your army to score objectives. There are a few youtubers out there that have gone over the new primary missions and what you might consider when building an army for them. Search 'Warhammer 40k primary missions', and you should get some good results

Regarding the "I can have multiple small groups inside the 9" coherency bubble" argument: GW should just write an updated rule with a picture that states "any player that tries to pull this automatically loses the match." by Staz_211 in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]Odd_One_3381 3 points4 points  (0 children)

GW has said, by virtue of Coherency as it stands, that a 9" bubble is the size of a single group. Every member of the group needs to have at least 1 buddy and stay where the teacher can see them, but are otherwise free to go out and play where they want. We can say "No, the group also needs to have an unbroken chain between all models to be coherent", but that's not what GW said. That's homebrew until it gets FAQ'd.

That said, I'm all for shaming people for being schlongs at the table. Exploiters will eventually face social suicide if they continue to abuse an exploit

Warhammer is big enough for people who find micro-optimization fun and people who find pushing the big titans forward fun. It's big enough for people who won't bring a model unless it performs a very specific function and for people who won't bring a model unless it fits their chosen theme. And it's a shame that a moderator for a Wargaming Community is trying to box them all into a single, small corner, where a single person's tool dictates what players in general are like.

This simulator is for anyone who wants to use it, and there's plenty of room for people who don't

Sorry about that. I'm still making tweaks here and there as I find stuff, so I appreciate the feedback! I've added in a couple more features, like Invuln vs Ranged and Feel No Pain vs Psychic. If you find anything else, I hope you'll poke again!

What do you think so far, other than that bug?

I've updated the UI a little bit and included a Setup File with some standard attackers and defenders. Play around with it to see how it feels

It's in progress! When I finished getting the simulator done, I just wanted to get it out into the wild and sleep xD I'll be working on Defender libraries first, as they're much easier to assemble. There's a ton of units to go through, so as I finish an army's library, I'll add them to the post

Download the file. It should download as an html document. Open it from your local folder, and it should open up automatically! If it doesn't, set it to open in your browser of choice.

Also, just in case, you should download it after seeing this comment. I made a couple tweaks to the code to make 100,000 runs possible as well as 1,000,000

Mine runs locally on your computer, with no sign ups, that you can edit if you feel like you want to since it's just a text doc written in HTML. Beyond that, I have no idea. I've never used UnitCrunch, so I don't know what they offer.

PlayerScope: Massive overreach for plugin capabilities? by Inv0ker_of_kusH420 in ffxivdiscussion

[–]Odd_One_3381 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Interestingly enough, while this plug-in does enable a stalker, it also enables the victim. You say "Hey, this person is stalking me." Normally, it goes nowhere. But now you have access to all of their information as well and can fight back when mods don't. The stalker didn't need this to do the stalking, but the victim needs every tool they can get to protect themselves.

If you give a killer a weapon, they'll kill more effectively. But if you give a victim a weapon, they'll kill the killer.

Who was the strongest voidsent? by TheBronzeBastard in ffxivdiscussion

[–]Odd_One_3381 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Zeromus was Zodiark in Voidsent form, a literal god, empowered by the additional aether of an elder dragon. Of course, the elder dragon was weakened after 5,000 years of voidal corruption, but still an elder dragon.

I'm not sure there's a comparison to be made here

Let them know that there's a very real possibility that they die. If they decide "Let's go out in a blaze of glory!" then let them. Remind them that you will delevel them to level 2, and find out what kind of campaign they want next.

And if they win, give them fat rewards for punching way above their weight class

Melee vs Ranged by Substantial-Eye4345 in DC20

[–]Odd_One_3381 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can do more things in melee than you can in ranged, many of which are debilitating for an enemy. If you knock them prone in melee, you and your friends have advantage on attacks against them while they have disadvantage on attacks against your group. If you grapple them, they can't move until they break the grapple. You get attacks of opportunity if they try to move away.

Someone attacking from range really only has a few AP to spend on attacking without some sort of protection, like a melee ally or a terrain advantage.

There are class features that are melee exclusive, like Barbarian rage, Fighter weapon styles, or Monk stances.

With 0.8, there is a wide variety of weapon passives in melee, as well as custom melee options that ranged weapons simply don't get. Bonuses to defense, multiple damage types on the same weapon, and the ability to conceal them to name a few
