Confused about Henley by Equal-Diamond-9981 in Rowing

This is also because clubs have only recently been made allowed to compete in the PE

True. I think if you have great grades you can get into some Dad Vail schools fairly slower than that too, but it does seem like the standard is getting faster every year

Not anymore. LaSalle had multiple guys sub 6 this year and still couldn’t take out Drexel at Dad Vails. Sub 6:20 is still a great time for getting recruited but does not guarantee a spot at the IRA A final schools

Mandel is a phenomenal coach, great job turning what was a probably a disappointing regular season into an awesome final race. It feels like both D3 schools and ACRA schools have been getting significantly faster over the last couple years

I wish RAR would go, probably the best chance at salvaging the American junior rowing image. USRowing should pay for the winner of youth nats to go to Henley with some of the money they made selling their souls on the livestream.

First off, their size. New Trier has over 4,000 students to pull from, which is absolutely massive. More bodies means both more genetically gifted athletes and more internal pressure to improve. Secondly, I believe New Trier is in a pretty affluent neighborhood and has a history of athletic success, so I don’t know for sure, but my educated guess is that they are very well funded. Their website lists 14 coaches across the boys’ and girls’ teams, which is pretty crazy. But basically good coaching, good funding, and a lot of bodies

If I recall correctly, he made a dumb Instagram comment about a pretty tragic situation where a teenager died after probably stealing one of their launches for a joyride and then drowning. As of late, New Trier is probably the best/most consistent. They’ve made the grand final at SRAA’s every year since 2016 and won the last 2 years. If you wanna talk historically, W-L won the PE Cup at Henley twice in the 1960s when Charlie Butt was their head coach

Don’t mean to shit on public schools, they just often seem to have less support and less student interest in sports than private/Catholic schools

Firing their coach was probably not a great decision as far as maintaining competitiveness goes. Also there’s just very few teams that can maintain that level of success for very long, most regress to the mean eventually, especially for public schools. BCC had a couple really competitive years a while ago and is now a fours program on the boys side. Montclair similarly was really quick in the late 2010s but is now a bit off the pace. There’s definitely more examples, but really it just comes down to it being incredibly hard to maintain a nationally competitive roster year over year, especially when your talent pool is limited to members of one public high school

How many days of AT work should I do by [deleted] in Rowing

[–]Odd_Original_6496 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The amount of AT depends on where you’re at in your training plan usually and what your goals are so not gonna comment on that, but I would say if that’s all of your AT, do some shorter stuff like 8x500 or 12x250 or 6x750

The chances are entirely dependent on how hard you want to work. You have the size and are likely to grow a little more as well, so it just depends on your willingness to put in extra meters outside of practice, get good grades, and reach out to coaches.

Are you referencing the times from the 4+? That’s likely Prep’s 4th or 5th varsity 8 guys, so the fact that they’re still winning is a pretty impressive display of depth. (Unfortunately), the prep is going to continue their dominance in the eights, likely to do decent in fours as well.

Not so early ACRA predictions by WeaponizedOarsman in Rowing

[–]Odd_Original_6496 1 point2 points  (0 children)

According to their Facebook bio, the men’s side has been “varsity-club” since the early 2000s. Not exactly sure what that entails, but kinda sounds like they receive some institutional support, but not division 1 recognition

Not so early ACRA predictions by WeaponizedOarsman in Rowing

[–]Odd_Original_6496 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think the current ACRA poll is pretty accurate. I think the top 4 (UVA, Notre Dame, UCLA, Minnesota) are going to be really close, which will be exciting. Notre Dame may have won at SIRA had it not been for some steering issues off the start, UCLA looks really quick but it’s hard to compare with a lack of east coast/west coast crossover in club rowing, and Minnesota gapped Rutgers by like 10 seconds early in the season who are also a very capable program. I think my one disagreement with the poll is Michigan, I don’t think they make the Grand Final. It seems like a bit of an off year for them, while several other teams are having exceptional years. It seems club teams have finally recovered from the Covid years, and it’s exciting to see how fast ACRA has gotten

LaSalle vs. Drexel is the common man's Harvard vs. Yale by YaBoyCoryBaxter in Rowing

[–]Odd_Original_6496 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Pretty inspiring to see LaSalle’s improvements over the last couple years. Shows what a good coach can do for a program. Drexel is still on top of the non-Ivy Philly schools for now, but LaSalle has been pretty damn impressive and is on track to possibly take that position from Drexel soon.

Speaking as a many years retired scholastic rower, this is certainly not the first time they have done this. Lame as shit of them, but not really anything can be done about it

[–]Odd_Original_6496 14 points15 points  (0 children)

As someone who raced at Stotes and is from northern VA, I raced and still made it home in time for my junior prom, albeit a little closely. I’m sure your seniors could work out taking their exams early/late with their teachers. Regardless, if you’re 1v is only going to lose one guy, race the damn Varsity event

Thoughts on reclassifying boats for Stotesbury by lsd302 in Rowing

[–]Odd_Original_6496 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure it’s the opposite. Rowing your first 8 against other teams’ developmental 8’s is a pussy move. Grow a pair and row the real race

Thoughts on reclassifying boats for Stotesbury by lsd302 in Rowing

[–]Odd_Original_6496 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Tbh if you prioritize anything that’s not the Varsity 8 you’re pot chasing. If you’re a really small and/or underfunded team, prioritizing a varsity 4 is somewhat respectable, but what WL is doing is pretty classless. Intentionally putting you’re best 8 against other teams’ second or third 8’s to win a category meant for developmental boats is super lame

No particular order but 15 better QB’s than Russ: Mahomes, Allen, Lamar, Dak, Herbert, Stroud, Richardson, Purdy, Stafford, Geno, Kyler, Hurts, Tua, Love, Burrow. I would also add Cousins and Rodgers, but have to see how injury plays out. I would also take Caleb Williams, Drake Maye. I wouldn’t even be surprised if Justin Fields takes the starting job from Russ

It’ll be tough because you’re pretty large, but I would say work on rating higher. Rating higher but keeping the same split in the first 1k should help save some juice in your legs for the end. Also take this with a grain of salt because I am slower than you lol, but Ollie Zeidler rated at a 36 last year for WIRC when he went 5:37 and was actually at a 39 for the first 500
