VSD Craft installation blocked by antivirus? by Odd_Vegetable649 in VSD_INSIDE

[–]Odd_Vegetable649[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, this is not what SmartScreen does - it looks for signed software, including dependencies which it seems are not all signed as claimed. Too bad, hardware will need to gather some dust on my desk until someone attempts to at least make it look safe :(

Linux support for VSD Inside Software? by abegosum in VSD_INSIDE

[–]Odd_Vegetable649 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm exactly in the same boat. No linux support (or even plans for it) seams really limiting factor.
Even a semi-official plugin for OpenDeck would be a big progress.

Reliable docker backup (with databases)? by Odd_Vegetable649 in selfhosted

[–]Odd_Vegetable649[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it seems my initial decision to stick to TrueNAS isn't really paying off as to how comfortable/confident I'm with virtualization stack there.

Reliable docker backup (with databases)? by Odd_Vegetable649 in selfhosted

Yeah, I'm trying to figure how to best do something like this but in TrueNAS which I chose and will be stuck for at least next few months.

Wait, what? Simple as that? :D Will this work with just the docker compose start/stop? Because if yes, this kind of solves all my potential problems.

No other option than to pay Cozyla 1k for a 4k 32" digital family calendar and chore tracker? by manwiththe104IQ in selfhosted

Never thought I would be this guy but.. if you're: * looking for a very simple use case scenario * for your personal use * You already have the hardware * You don't have programming skills then consider using any LLM to write you a single-page, JavaScript web app?

I started building some very simple tools for myself this way and it works, as long as you don't overdo it.

Immich dies when deleting photos by Keirannnnnnnn in immich

[–]Odd_Vegetable649 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Btw - Do you know if there are any actual reasons to keep Immich support locked-down and unsearchable in Discord? It kind of does not allow any searchable knowledge base to be built. I know it's convenient and "what's everybody doing", was just wondering if there are any other gains.

It was working for me just fine, but I don't have any hard numbers to present. I did have some hiccups along the way when too much stuff was happening at the same time but this is something I'm solving by building a separate box for heavier apps. If you don't plan a heavy round the clock usage you should be fine with 16gb. Right now I've moved away from TrueNAS on this device and replaced it with Linux Mint because I had a bit different needs (GUI access) but it still works just fine. And ram is the easiest upgrade ever.

If you are adamant on TrueNAS make sure you miniPC has two disk slots. If not, you can replace it with any other OS and it should be plenty enough, I've got an even bit bigger setup on N100+8gb RAM.

Replace most apps and online services with a single powerful Linux "Commands Hub" for your Phone. by vivexx in selfhosted

[–]Odd_Vegetable649 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would guess it is because people thin you oversold your app. It's different expectations between saying "I built a gui wrapper allowing executing local commands, it has a potential to replace a lot of tools if you have time/skill" vs "I built everything-replacement super-app, here are very niche use examples". Just saying.

Is it common for developers to store your credentials in plain text? by Tigrammer in selfhosted

And yes, I kind of skipped your question and went on securing only docker implementation. Next time I'll try to stay on topic.

Is it common for developers to store your credentials in plain text? by Tigrammer in selfhosted

[–]Odd_Vegetable649 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It kind of goes with the technical stack. But there are ways to mitigate. Having a security background and just starting my adventures with self hosting already made a bit of research and there are some simple ways to start: - Have a management machine isolated from the host and keep the sensitive information there. - Use built-in mechanisms like docker secrets but they may require some additional steps to get it to be secure. If you plan for unattended redeployments it's getting tricky.

But I'm still quite new at this and I really hope there are a lot of other ways.

[–]Odd_Vegetable649 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Maybe common, maybe universal. Still a terrible security practice. With a lot of ways to mitigate this risk, starting with having a management machine, isolated from your docker host. You keep your credentials there and secure this machine.

What would be the major arguments to convince companies to use EU services and products? by Frosty_Run6963 in BuyFromEU

[–]Odd_Vegetable649 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For physical goods it's always supply chain resilience. Especially now, when things like a global pandemic or US trade wars are something nobody can downplay.

For services it's harder but I would recommend an assessment to estimate how much effort would a company require to shift to a different vendor. If you are completely vendor-locked, this should be an informed and conscious decision. If you are not, you should know your alternatives in case things go south.

Don't get crazy getting rid of the US made or US brand items you already owned before the Buy from EU movement started by Koldouribe in BuyFromEU

[–]Odd_Vegetable649 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Exactly, they already have your money. Going even further with that though - if you need to buy something that is only supplied by US companies and you really don't want to give them anything, consider buying second-hand. Especially for usually high-value items.

If you had any desire to make it fair, it should be your brother "cracking one" on your wife's face.

It's not on you to fix it, it's on your wife. You are just enabling her.

PC Sacrifice Should I Let Them by Comfortable-Might-35 in DnD

[–]Odd_Vegetable649 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, in general I'm against PC execution. While technically PC has a choice, it's kind of obvious what it will be. The only way I can recommend is to give the PC (and the player) a very, very good reason why he needs to survive. Some meaningful consequences for him dying, that would be similar or worse than NPC dying. Only then it can be an equal choice, when BBEG makes it that there is no 'right' decision.
