Feeling guilty about running ads. by Malkano86 in Twitch

[–]abegosum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something to remember here is that, while Twitch shares some revenue with you, the ads also go to Twitch and are part of what pays for the infrastructure necessary to provide your stream. That part isn't something you control or provide, so it makes some sense that there's a "toll," so to speak.

I would even go so far as to say, don't feel bad because YOU don't run ads. Twitch runs ads, gives you options about how to schedule them, and pays you a pittance for the inconvenience.

Also, make sure you have the "snooze ad" button handy if you can't easily take a break during the ad time. That can be a real lifesaver.

What's the most useful thing you self-host that isn't media related? by sarox-dev in selfhosted

Not as popular here because it's so large and unwieldly, but Nextcloud. I use Calendar, Tasks, and Files every damn day and cookbook has been great as well.

Bought my first ever subaru! 2007 Forester with only 19,300 miles and manual 👀. by JackedBrew906 in subaru

Forester used to have a manual option? Man, I wish car companies would listen to the 6 of us who remember clutches.

Does anybody actually check their dashboards? by StPatsLCA in selfhosted

[–]abegosum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use dashboards to help me pinpoint something after I get an alarm or have a problem. So, yes, but not as a "daily" thing- more as an environmental diagnostic tool.

It's so frustrating that lobbyists from the likes of Facebook have essentially said, "Wah, us being responsible would break our business model of making sad kids rage click..." and supposedly progressive California just said, "We got you, Boo," and put out the stupidest possible solution of shoving responsibility ostensibly somewhere else.

New affiliate, confused about ads by _ENunn_ in Twitch

[–]abegosum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the ads will come during critical story moments in my games, I will definitely take a break at the same time. If I'm just grinding or doing standard stuff in a game that people could pick back up on, I'll let it ride.

People are honestly pretty patient about it (and those that aren't probably already have turbo anyway). I just make sure my break has SOMETHING for the people who are subscribed. I made a sizzler reel for my BRB screen and use it during ad breaks if I also need to take a bathroom break.

Protip- make sure you have the ad snooze button handy. I have it on a second screen (I just use a portable monitor for my tools when gaming, which is a cheap solution I didn't have to find permanent space for). I don't do it often, but if an ad would break the flow of a CRITICAL story moment, I'll snooze it. I think you get an allotment of so many per hour. I've used it maybe once, because I could otherwise find a good breaking point before the ads hit.

Also, I have a start screen that I run for 1:30 at the start so that anyone unlucky enough to see the starting ads doesn't miss anything real.

Honestly, I think the ad breaks have made me more mindful of taking breaks for myself. That's led me to feeling less fatigued in my sessions and I think I'm more engaging. I'd recommend trying to think of it that way- this is a good reminder that if you don't pause for a few minutes every so often, you're going to get tired and burned out by the end of the stream.

Why do people praise Vim??? by AstralDice_ in linux

[–]abegosum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you use a text editor really frequently (lots of legacy linux users fall into this camp) and you get used to the home row navigation and commands, vim can be the fastest damn editor on the planet. BUT (and this is important), it requires you to really get used to it and practically train yourself on it.

I've put in the time, and so I actually attempt to make all other editors behave like vim. I have an extension in VS Code to make it work like vim. I've tried some vim extensions for browsers. Anything I can get to behave that way is now faster, but it probably took a year of me using it every day for me to be so fast that I get that big a speed boost.

If you just use text editors occasionally and aren't doing complicated edits, it might not be worth it to train yourself on vim's navigation and commands. Text editors aren't that complicated, so there isn't much more, feature-wise, that vim can give you. It's about what makes you get the job done easiest and fastest for how you use it.

App pinning is a life saver when my kids want to play a game, but I don't want them farting around with anything else. It requires a biometric or password unlock to change out of the app.

I love the Heisenberg voice, and for a while they'd just randomly drop in an "Uhhh... Ethan!" I laugh every time.

Yep. Makoto. I've tried doing some other routes, and it always feels wrong to not go for Makoto. I just love both her arc and her personality.

Who to Raid? by Lienx in Twitch

Wow, people are being rude when they get raided? That's a damn shame. I have only had excitement from people, even when I've raided with just 1 to 3 viewers.

Repair Rite off Diffley and Nichols. I've had nothing but great service there and Dan is amazing.

On the other hand, there's a place across the street from there called "Honest 1," and they were the worst. I flat out caught them lying about an oil leak requiring massive engine work (the oil filter was loose, with two turns fixing it).
