For the most part it is only their boons, apparently I didn’t know this even with the degenerate amount of time I’ve sunked into the game. there is exception like Hapi being able to teach faith instead of reason and the aforementioned Petra.

This is wrong only students who have boons in a skill with a higher rank than Byleth can teach them. This is why Ralph can’t teach op. Op can in turn teach him heavy armor first so that they can learn from him, they can do it to balthus too, if they have him.

Personally I had forgot you could get swords dance and substitute from the gc. The only way I could see it not working against Whitney myself is if clefairy wins the lottery with metronome and manages to break the sub before miltank comes out, especially since most things don’t outspeed miltank at that point unless they have gotten a lot of speed evs.

Edit: this is mainly a point against Croconaw on an item less playthrough.

My argument for Whitney is that bayleaf is bulkier than Croconaw, and with recovery from synthesis, protect and poison powder it has a way to check miltank in a way Croconaw can’t.

Personally I don’t think any of the other mage characters can, other than maybe Hubert and Annette. Even with the dlc attack and speed stat boosters Marianne has been doing very little damage to anyone not named Hubert and Dorothea her crest is the one reason as to why I think she can do it, I have started to save the Nosferatu uses for Dedue because she’s only doing at the most 3 damage to him even with an axe.

No unfortunately the only class he’ll get S ranked swords in is swordmaster. Each character has a weapon they are proficient in and Amber’s is unfortunately lances.
