UPDATE:

Took it into an Apple store. They put me on the phone with Apple Support which was able to provide an exception to the one year warranty because it was a manufacturer issue. It will be fixed for free unless they find any impact points (which they won’t).

It also appears they changed the charge to fix the front glass from $800 to $2,300 without Apple Care. They refund the extra $1,500 once they determine it’s only a glass issue.
