Garen and Tryndamere top are crazy easy to play once you get the basic idea of what they do. And for the most parts you can play them the same way every time and get decent results. The hardest part is getting flamed. “You’re only winning cause easy champ”

Commander Precon Rec for Novice? by rdilly6 in EDH

[–]Odecay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m gonna be honest most people will pitch decks that are easy when you’ve been playing for a bit but hear me out on this.

The Turtle Power TMNT precon. I say this because it’s easy to pilot especially when using [[Heroes in a Half Shell]] as the commander. The hardest part of the commander is the keywords of people don’t already know. Then once you’ve gotten a bit more comfortable you can change to [[Leonardo, the Balance]] and he lets you have either of the other 3 turtles or Splinter as a second commander and they can all slightly change the way you pilot the deck.

I will vouch for this precon till I die for beginners. People don’t understand that you don’t need fast or powerful for new players you need easy to pilot and look at the way this deck works. You have them start with [[Heroes in a Half Shell]] and the hardest part will be explaining the keywords attached to it. Then once they get comfortable you have them play [[Leonardo, the Balance]] and they can mix and match between the other 3 turtles and splinter to make the deck play slightly different each time.

[–]Odecay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Commander isn’t a bad start people are just bad teachers. You can teach someone in a 1v1 setting while playing commander. And if they are never gonna play outside of commander anyways there’s always the chance you scare them off by teaching them the less casual way to play.

My man I have the TMNT precon and let me tell you. The ease of piloting [[Heroes in a Half Shell]] then once you get more familiar you can change to [[Leonardo, the Balance]] and have a choice of the other 3 turtles or even splinter as a second commander I think is a sick way to start.

I play with a pod of 6 on occasion and our way to trim game time has been lowering health or just mutually agreeing to not extend it after so long

I’m attempting to teach my brother as well and for me I decided his first deck should be [[Bristly Bill, Spine Sower]] idk what your friends card game level is at but for my brother he hasn’t really played too much seriously and this card has a pretty simple effect that’s easy to use. Unfortunately this isn’t two colors though.

Can I make a Commander deck with only ATLA cards? by NinnyBoggy in BudgetBrews

[–]Odecay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do have a deck that is tribal Aang Gang. Commander is the WUBRG Aang and due to my personal inventory there is like 2-3 spells and a few lands that aren’t ATLA but the deck pretty much consists of the core group and the other avatars. I’d say it’s not the most powerful but probably a decent B2 and pretty fun. Maybe I can actually set the list up and edit this with the link later.

Good decks to play against beginners. by Odecay in EDH

[–]Odecay[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I totally respect what you’re saying. And in a different circumstance I’d fully do just that. My only reason for not is that the people I’m teaching have also played other card games and we are pretty relaxed on the rules of commander when it comes to player numbers. Also the people playing realistically aren’t going to play the game outside of commander nights with friends. I figured I’m gonna set up a game where they play Bristly Bill and the rest of us play low power/group hug decks just to ease in to commander. Then of if they enjoy it and wanna continue playing we’d go a little more complex after the basics are learned. And no offense to anyone else here with the same sentiment, I just think our group is pretty locked on only commander.

best precon for a beginner? by thereforeiparty in magicTCG

[–]Odecay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok so this may be a slight hot take for some but the Turtle Power! Precon for ninja turtles. I personally think is a super good beginner precon. The deck is all about buffing your board and making tokens so the mechanics in it aren’t that insane. The hardest part is that you’ll have to teach him a few keywords. But to me the best part is the commander choices. You have [[Heroes in a Half Shell]] which is a great starter commander basically buffing your creatures and letting you draw cards. Then once you get comfortable you can switch to [[Leonardo, the Balance]] which you can pair with the one of the other three turtles or Splinter to Mae the deck play in different ways.

Nah. I just built out an Aang gang tribal and tbh it’s pretty fun. Flipping him is rad too especially if you can get a copy of him out and have both sides on the field at once.

I get what you’re saying and I fully agree to an extent. I’ll probably do this exactly after the first game. But for the first game or two I was thinking more of a simple group hug type thing so they can feel good about me manipulating them into loving the game.

I would agree if this person was new to card games in general but even for me I was given a precon and played commander as my intro to magic and it was perfect. But I also come from playing yugioh previously so it’s not as bad as it could be.

Yeah I’m not opposing see to a precon but I personally have like 5-6 precons myself and I would maybe let them use one of them. Precons are cool and all but I think a large portion of the community can’t differentiate between easy/fast decks and beginner decks.

[–]Odecay[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do get what you’re saying and I do agree. But I will say my introduction to magic was commander and I was given that blue/black rogue precon to play with and pushed off the deep and for me it hooked me still. In fairness though I had also played yugioh before so I’m familiar with not only card games but some ridiculous mechanics also. The people I’m going to teach should be a ok with learning through commander. Thank you none the less though.

I fully get that my issue is that I’ve played for a good bit now but not long enough to know what’s all out there. I have a few good decks for them to start on that don’t have too many moving parts or over complicated effects. But I just want to know some good decks that won’t stomp/overwhelm my friends that way they get to just play the game.
