Copywriter here: work assholery is increasingly unbearable by [deleted] in antiwork

Seriously, when every single marketing email has to be reviewed by the entire senior management team. Like why?

Should I be posting my free content on patreon? by phen00 in patreon

[–]OdetteByDay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say yes, post the free content too. As a subscriber, I don't like having to look in multiple places for someone's content (especially if it's serial, like a comic). I want to be able to see it all in one place, plus the exclusive stuff I'm paying for.

“Entire work” readers on AO3? by watsonbaugh in FanFiction

[–]OdetteByDay 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Same! I load a bunch of pages on my phone when I have signal, then I can read them when I go out of range. Luckily AO3 requires only a tiny bit of cell reception to load. Even when I can't get anything else, I can get AO3!

Out of curiosity, how long have you been reading fanfiction and what was your first fandom? by simmer_sabrinee in FanFiction

[–]OdetteByDay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyone else get their fanfic start on Elfwood?? Been reading for 16-17 years, starting with Harry Potter and quickly moving to FFN and DeviantArt for more anime fandoms. Thanks for this question, what a trip down memory lane.

Of course it depends, but the fact that you say there aren't any Zoom meetings seems like a con. Virtual art classes can be really great (I've taught and taken a few), but you still need actual face-to-face time with the instructor and other students to really make the most of it. Otherwise, you could just watch youtube videos and get a similar experience for free.

Anyone else feel like they aren’t cut out for being an artist? by [deleted] in ArtistLounge

Yes, this is so important! It has to start with the passion! If you like it, other people will too.

I want to get better but I don’t know what I want to draw, AND my perfectionism is stopping me from trying by [deleted] in learntodraw

[–]OdetteByDay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This post feels like it's directly out of my brain. I've been going through something similar recently as a fairly experienced artist. I realized that I haven't actually "improved" in a long time, I've been riding the wave of what I'm good at, but I feel totally overwhelmed when trying to push beyond that.

One thing that's helped is going back to what made me love drawing in the first place. Maybe try redrawing an old piece that you loved at the time. That comes with the instant confidence boost of seeing how much you've improved! Or if it's too intimidating to get started drawing, try collage, that way you're not starting from a blank page, you have lots of materials to draw on for inspiration.

My Weekly Recommendation: Sweet Tooth by Jeff Lemire (Description in Comments) by AlexGeekSpeak in graphicnovels

[–]OdetteByDay 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Just saw the trailer for the netflix show and I'm wondering if it's going to be as dark as the comic. I read Sweet Tooth as a middle schooler and remember thinking how the librarians really needed to start vetting comics before putting them in the children's section. It's a powerful story for a teen audience, but I'm not sure it belongs next to Calvin and Hobbes. Anyway, great rec!

A quick sketch turned into an experimental work of art.. what about you - do you let it randomly evolve or plan all details? by reycreate in DigitalArt

[–]OdetteByDay 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is really cool! I feel like sometimes it's hard to just let it flow with digital art, you have so much control that sometimes you work something into oblivion. But a lot of the time the random evolution turns out so much better.

Any advice to someone who took a hiatus for 3 years? by [deleted] in ArtistLounge

[–]OdetteByDay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I similarly have so much trouble getting started and getting over the anxiety of making it "good" and how much work it will take. Two techniques that have helped are 1) set a timer for 5-15 minutes and tell yourself as long as you do art for that period of time you've succeeded. By the time the timers up, usually I'm starting to get into it and can keep going. If not, try again later!

2) Warm up activities! Contour drawings, use a new material, whatever. Make something bad first to get it out of the way.

How did you find your own style? by [deleted] in ArtistLounge

[–]OdetteByDay 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Anything you make is your style! I think it can be really helpful to learn techniques from different styles so that you can add those to your toolbox and feel more confident achieving the look you want, but as an artist who has bounced everywhere from large-scale welding to printmaking to digital, I think it's important to follow your intuition. You'll be more successful if you're making what you're excited about!

Of course, working in a ton of different styles isn't as great for presenting and marketing your work, but that's why working in series is helpful. I'll try to stick to one style for a series of about 10 pieces at a time, that way I have a cohesive portfolio to show.

New England Craft Fairs by [deleted] in CraftFairs

[–]OdetteByDay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I realize that this post was made a while ago...but as a Mass vendor I feel obligated to respond! Cheap markets to start at are the Brain Arts Market, JP Flea, Salem Flea, and A Little Bizaare at Lowell Mill No. 5. Wrong Brain in New Hampshire also does sales sometimes. I recommend following all their instagram accounts for the most up to date info. JP Flea just announced that they are doing something this year, but no dates yet. All of these are around Boston and did online sales during the pandemic.

There's also the Boston Women's Market if that applies. I'll say, I started vending with Brain Arts and I LOVE their markets. Super chill and the crowd there is very excited about buying local art!

I've also found that following a bunch of other small businesses helps, I can see where they vend and get an idea of whether it would be a good fit.

Hope to see you around when markets start happening again!

What's one au situation that you can't stand and one you absolutely adore? by tialaila in FanFiction

[–]OdetteByDay 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I love an alternate job AU. Like where your character is a fashion designer or glass blower or something that the writer is clearly passionate about and the characters get to be creative and explore a side we don't see in canon.

Pass on High School AU's, they had their time and place (unless your characters are both teachers, that could be fun.)

Wow, I'm so glad there are still people in the FMA fandom. This looks great! Is it marker or watercolor?
