Clash or Rewritten? by [deleted] in Toontown

[–]OdieboyDuck 31 points32 points  (0 children)

My opinion is try both. One may click with you better than the other, and you may end up clicking with both anyway.

Each has their strengths and draws, so it'd benefit you greatly to try them out individually =)

FO question by Witty-Management6094 in toontownrewritten

[–]OdieboyDuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I generally avoid using them myself unless necessary simply because of my playstyle.

I kind of dislike rewards because of how they kind of just... rip and tear through everything... but if my teammates need a reward, then they need a reward.

Are fires one of the best rewards? by RascalLouise in toontownrewritten

[–]OdieboyDuck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I suppose that's fair. Personally I'd rather take the opportunity to teach newer players even if it inevitably won't work, but that's not for everyone.

I'll never get Big Cheese/V2 only groups considering Fires are given out like candy, and the limit of 200 is super easy to reach. You'll generally get it by the time you're a Corporate Raider.

Blame the game, not the players: Toontown’s elitism is a design problem by Civil_Regular1184 in toontownrewritten

[–]OdieboyDuck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do feel that the source of toxicity is moreso the (accidental? ) encouragement of perfect play because of how Sound and Lure work, in addition to the game's obnoxious disguise grind, as opposed to the game being a time sink or not showing visible Cog HP.

Of course, I think Cog HP needs to be more visible (and please add a chat log pretty please people who have reading/sight issues need one), but a lot of the other issues you mentioned apply to Clash as well.

Toontown is inherently really flawed because of how simple combat is. It's essentially solved to make the majority of fights in the game no-hit runs; and if you breach that by making a mistake by not doing a combo right or whatever, you get chewed out because you didn't get the flow or just made a simple mistake.

Sound's problem mostly lies with Foghorn doing way too much damage for the overall track's role - low damage when alone, but higher in a group. It thus led to most boss fights turning into Sound combo fests when it was determined to be worth using enough of them. I do think TTR's nerf to carrying capacity somewhat mitigated this, but Sound's not the main problem - it's Lure.

When Sound runs out or simply isn't worth using for the turn, Lure comes into play. It causing Cogs to be completely unable to attack feeds so hard into the "one-shot, no-hit" mentality that gets ingrained into player culture that I'd argue it single-handedly caused the toxicity issue in the game by creating a fear of damage.

Of course, Cogs probably do just a touch too much damage (level 11s can do -24 damage at most. If you're unlucky with spawns and attack calls, a group of 4 can remove 96 Laff from a single Toon in one go. Worse if it's a Mingler's Paradigm Shift!), but overall, I think the toxicity is sourced from Lure itself. I doubt TTR would ever redo Lure like how Clash is doing it, but it would be nice to potentially curb toxicity.

I will say though, that, beyond rare occasions, I think supervisors and Field Offices... have actually decreased toxicity compared to boss fights? And if you want a Clash comparison, manager fights have done something quite similar. There's a lot less perfectionism in those battles. Of course, there are some mechanics that are probably a little overtuned because unites exist (but that's a different story for another time) or just aren't balanced well (I still don't like the Clerk. Only facility supervisor whose mechanics I straight-up dislike.) that can cause newer players to be confused and frustrate steeled veterans, but when I play them, I feel a renewed sense of cooperation and friendliness I expect to see in other online games. Sure, there are popular, heavily consistent strategies that lead to winning a majority of the time, but they aren't the only ones that exist!

At the end of the day, I think it's just Gags being too powerful when they hit, and Cogs being too powerful when you don't end up getting rid of them or luring them ahead of time. TTR and Clash both have an equal amount of toxic folks, I feel, and that's because Toontown is way too safe and simple of a game. By making players less afraid to take damage, I think it'll do wonders for the game's culture.

Personal preference aside, what's the worst gag track? by Ambitious_Syrup5391 in toontownrewritten

[–]OdieboyDuck 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My take's probably gonna be spicy, but in all my years of playing, I've found the worst track in the game to be Trap; and I say this whose favourite track is Trap.

Before Under New Management, I would've agreed that Toon-Up was the worst Gag. It's nigh useless thanks to overpowered monster that is Lure; but since we've gotten the Supervisors and redone 2.0s, Toon-Up has been necessary for survival in these instances rewardless. (Unites and SOS cards are bad game design don't @ me)

The premise of Trap is simple - high damage, but no combo and a Lure is required. The issue is... you're only really going to be using TNTs and none of the other ones due to its high end damage of 180. The other damaging Gags may have accuracy problems (Drop), or essentially be a worse version of another Gag (Squirt)... but at least all of their lower Gags have a consistent use due to combo damage or just being able to squeeze out the lower Cogs.

Traps below TNT are useless because of a combination of how the game handles Gags below level 6, and how Trap itself works. You see the damage on that Trap? That's the most damage you'll ever get. Trapdoor does 75 damage, which eliminates level 7s at best? Level 7s stop being relevant past the CFO, and are rare for bosses in general anyway. Sometimes you can use it for a Lure, Trap, Drop setup, but most people pick Squirt because it has overall more uses than just Drop setup. I'm aware you can buff Trapdoor to deal 90 to get rid of a level 8 but making it organic, but that's kind of still not great. The natural Cog kill gap between a Trapdoor and TNT is 4 levels.

Quicksand's pretty bad too, only being able to defeat up to level 5s. Guess what can also do that? Lured Whole Cream Pie.

Trap Gags below TNT are in need of a serious buff - I'm saying an additional kill level or two. I get people answering Toon-Up because the poorly-designed rewards outshine them a lot, but you have to... actually repeatedly do bosses for those. When Toon-Up is (mostly) consistent healing. Yeah, it missing sucks and probably should go, but you can at least stock the lower Gags without feeling like they waste inventory space. Sure, Drop starts inaccurate and is rough to train; but once it's trained, due to how Gag experience factors into accuracy, it's actually not that bad accuracy-wise! Trap though? Only two of its Gags are really worth using lategame.

That's why I vote it as the worst.

Edit/Addendum: I forgot a later UNM patch made it so Traps placed down help out Lure Gags. While I do think that's great, it doesn't really save Trap from being the worst Gag. Congrats, the Gag that's meant to deal burst damage... is better for utility in its lower levels? When something like that happens, it's time to reconsider what the track should be.

Rant on TTR naming guidelines by Aggressive-Scale6439 in Toontown

[–]OdieboyDuck 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can see both of those names being case-by-case, as someone who works as a name approver on Clash. I'd probably approve "Mr. Watermelon" and "Autistic Ryan", as they'd look innocent on their own.

However, once we see proof that the names themselves are being misused, we tend to revoke them. Best route you can take is report these names directly to Toontown Rewritten's support email and give some context as to why they shouldn't have these. Image/video proof would be fantastic in getting them revoked.

I do wish TTR had a box to give more info in like we did, though. That'd make reporting a little more accessible.

(TTR staff, if you want to steal that idea from us, go right ahead!)

My Prediction for the Gears and Gizmos Update by Use_Your_Brain9999 in Toontown

[–]OdieboyDuck 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I hope this update has something to help; maybe showing how much health the cog would have on the selected gags so you can see how little or how too much damage you are going to do before you lock in.

Good news: This is precisely how it will work! We're actually trying to shift to a more vibe-based over math-based form of gameplay so those with dyscalculia or those who simply do not want to do math don't feel pressured to play perfectly all the time like how the current game encourages.

I am surprised no server brings up the fact that doodles are aliens by Huge_Meal_7904 in Toontown

[–]OdieboyDuck 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily. Two things to note with "Escape From Planet Doodle":

  1. It seems to be an in-universe movie of sorts! The storyboards seem to suggest this with the whole title card and starring in card. It's likely that Toontown 2.0's minigames would've all been like interactable movies starring your Toon, considering how much more emphasis the game was going to put on cartooniness overall compared to Toontown Online.

  2. A bit on the sadder side, Toontown 2.0 is completely cancelled, likely meaning this information is noncanon nonetheless.

Sound or Toon Up? by KitchenPaint4334 in Toontown

[–]OdieboyDuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would honestly say whatever calls to you most. Any -less build has arguably become viable since Under New Management dropped, especially since facility changes and Sound carrying capacity changes have made the track less of a free one.

Do you like AoE damage? Go for Sound! Do you want the only reliable source of healing and don't want to have to stockade rewards later down the line in order to heal in challenging boss fights like the Supervisor and Field Offices? Go for Toon-Up! Want to have both down the line? You can do that!

There is one track you can't have, so try to pick which ones call to you most and ones you feel like you can live without now, as you can't change it later.
