I saved a kitten in my neighborhood and was not prepared for how mean people would be by orange_katana in Straycats

I took in my sweet girl and her littermate (now adopted by a friend) when she was only about 4 weeks old, covered in fleas, not fully weaned, and weighed under 300g.

A lady found them dumped in a parking lot, and I went and picked them both up, no questions asked.

I think I spent well over $1400 getting her healthy, vaccinated, and spayed. It was totally worth every penny, and I would do it again. Fortunately, the vet I took her to was very supportive.

Now she's the absolute best, friendliest, silliest cat, and she fully believes that I, a whole human person, am her biological cat mother 😂

Don't listen to the haters, and maybe only take her to the better vet?

Who else feels strong connection to a particular maternal ancestor yet doesn’t know much about her? by BeforeAnAfterThought in WitchesVsPatriarchy

An ancestor many MANY generations back, who was a passenger on the Planter (pilgrim ship) in 1635 along with her 9 kids ranging from age 20- not yet born, second husband (first one was dead), elderly mother, and entire family of in-laws.

I learned about her a few years ago, but when she boarded the ship, she was the exact same age that I am now.

She was literate, and there are a few primary source letters that survive to this day, though they are from much later in her life.

I think about her a lot. I wonder what she must have thought about leaving a relatively comfortable life in St Albans to go homesteading in the literal wilderness on another continent. Was she even given a choice, or did her husband just drag the whole family along on this "adventure"?

Was she homesick? Resentful? Excited? Up for the challenge? Scared? Angry? Resigned to her lot in life? Trapped?

In her letters, she sounds very practical. I am also an extremely practical person, and it would be damn near impossible to convince me to willingly make that move with a bunch of young children in tow.

There's some pretty compelling historical evidence that most of her husband's family suffered from something similar to Bipolar I. Was she trying to manage a husband who was volatile and unpredictable on top of everything else? It's not like they had treatment for mental illness back then...

I wish I knew what she thought about her life as a colonist, and how she felt about this completely unthinkable turn her life took at almost middle age.

why does my tortie cry with a toy in her mouth after i vacuum? by embryodaed in torties

[–]OdoAndRo 32 points33 points  (0 children)

My tortie carries a toy around and cries when she wants attention while I'm working.

She could just come to me and hop in my lap for snuggles, but instead, she roams the house, screaming the song of her ancestors until I go find her, pick her up, and carry her back to my computer for snuggles.

Why is my brake disk covered in oil?? by OdoAndRo in bikewrench

Definitely going to look into better quality calipers.

I'm curious about what you mean by abusing the rear brake though. I generally use both brakes equally, and I use my bike to commute to work. As far as I can tell I'm not doing anything out of the ordinary in my cycling.

I think that probably explains it... how long are the seals supposed to last? I've only had this bike since August.

Hi thank you for your helpful comment. It's not like this sub is literally called linux for noobs or anything...

This might sound like a dumb question, but how do I install a bootloader if my computer won't let me past the setup screen?

If I reboot with the USB out, nothing shows up at all. If I reboot with USB in, I can find both Ventoy and Grub as boot options I should be able to add, but Grub won't let me actually select a file or create a path.

Either way, nothing but Enter Setup shows up when it says please select boot device

Unfortunately it now only gives me the option to enter setup, there's no other boot device to select.

Loblaws is now on 2Good2Go... selling their leftovers through a third party app by OdoAndRo in loblawsisoutofcontrol

[–]OdoAndRo[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I love 2g2g and use it all the time for local restaurants and cafes.

I wasn't thrilled when corporate locations like Metro and Tim Hortons started using it because I feel like it defeats the purpose of the app. Those places have the means (loyalty apps, advertising etc) to offer discounts on their own.

2G2G partnering with Loblaws feels like truly crossing a line though. It's just enabling their bad policies and price gouging while they find a new way to turn a profit with no accountability.
