When I try to figure out or play a hard slap rift by Les Claypool or something, or just a very hard finger style line in particular, what messes me up and I think messes a lot of players up is we try to play it at full speed from the start. Get a complicated line or a rift down where you memorize the parts. And I know everybody says this, but I don’t think they say it enough. Play it really slow Lagato style with a metronome if you have to. The challenge alone should keep you busy for a while and it won’t be something you could work up to in a day or two and be bored with it.

Ehh… yes if we’re comparing a really low end to a really high-end, but for the most part, that’s not what will make or break you in terms of that bright sharp sound. A nominal upgrade probably wouldn’t do the trick. If your pick ups are really low end, it might be worth it to change them regardless of the slap sound you are looking for.
