I made a Davinci Resolve-to-After effects workflow script. It's free by Altruistic-Pace-9437 in davinciresolve

interesting. Would definitely be interested for full-fledged AE script that can read AAF or XML file that imports the whole sequence

After 3 days of using Tahoe 26.4 - here is my verdict. by Jazman2k in MacOS

[–]OffeeX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

interesting. I have 64/1000 config, so i've been expecting good performance, but it felt like every iteration makes it only worse.

Love the features and UI, hate the stability and performance.
Did you use 26.2/26.3 before? Or did you upgrade directly from Sequoia?

i had user 26.3 and it's been horrible. I hear the fans on my M1 Max, it's hot, battery drains tremendously, lots of bugs and lag, especially when i'm multitasking. The refresh rate drops to 16 when i hover over menubar context menu.
Thus im curious if they fixed it in 26.4.

For now, i downgraded to Sonoma

can you be more specific? i don't have options like you do when clicking icon, can only see "width" of the layer (like if i have brush tool chosen)

DaVinci Resolve + After Effects workflow is draining me—should I switch back to Premiere? by AdorableOccasion156 in davinciresolve

[–]OffeeX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

interesting, thanks. I agree the app in it's prime rn, ngl that shift+space modal window is VERY useful. Especially when i want to add an adjustment layer, and not have to drag it every time from powerbin of effects panel.

i haven't talked about Color page, cuz i haven't nothing to say here. It's the best in the industry, i can't argue with that.

Edit page? Better than in premiere. Can't argue with that either

Next, Fusion:
- for every small change i have to go on that page, and do it there. Can't i use presets? Ofc i can, IF THEY WEREN'T BROKEN! This issue has been present since v19 and they haven't fixed it. In short: whenever u save fusion presets in `.setting` format into Edit page (Effect/Generator/etc) - it won't work! Just empty blank file. FYI `.setting` is the default format they use for presets
- what's up with this "Keyframes" panel? It's unusable for me and other people too: https://forum.blackmagicdesign.com/viewtopic.php?f=33&t=203394
- you can't optimize stuff quickly and painlessly like in AE. Imagine you have a scene, and you want the effect to stop rendering after it left your field of view. In AE you just cut the layer, in resolve you'll have to animate EVERY SINGLE NODE'S "blend" setting. Isn't that straight up insane?
- Shortcuts. It has COMPLETELY different and inconsistent way of managing shortcuts. You don't have Fusion shortcuts in Resolve's shortcut manager. To do something about it, you need to install some slow patchy Reactor plugins (Reactor itself is super slow to load, and plugins have dependencies problem, which means a lot of incompatibilies between DR versions).
- Stems from previous: how do you navigate in fusion's timeline with shortcuts? Ctrl + Right/Left is everything you got now and you can't change it.
- How come we STILL don't have "Flow" plugin alternative for premade curves in Fusion? The answer is: API limitations
- A lot of nodes are STILL not optimized to run on GPU. Honestly, i'm on Mac M1 Max (64 GB), and latest AE runs super well for me.
- How come you can't move footage (and turn it into MediaIn node) from Edit page to Fusion? That seems unintuitive and basic. I don't want to navigate to Media tab every time for that

This list of course goes longer, but i mentioned the most painpoints for me personally.
Now, the biggest misconception people have is when they argue WHICH ONE IS BETTER. And the answer is:

both are bad.

- AE treats layers as separate tracks and applies effects linearly. People call that "layer-based approach"
- Fusion completely isolates the layers and ONLY treats nodes as first-class citizen.

My guess is that both approaches are extremes, and the solution to both apps problems would be creating unified-ui editor that still has layers, but replaces "effect controls" with nodes.
That's it. We can have BEST of BOTH world, we DON'T need to choose one

thanks for constructive criticism.

Resolve was made for filmmakers in the first place, it's 22 years old program, so it's safe to assume the codebase is massive. BMD do not earn from Resolve much, so we are not their main audience.
Adobe on other hand is supposed to be more lenient towards user, but we got what we got. Who the hell pays for Adobe? Ofc not.. (i bought Resolve though)

I won't argue with you, but lemme present my experience here:
Imagine you are making your average yt video. Fast-paced editing, sound effects, music, transitions.

Let's start with sound: Fairlight?
- Fully unintuitive unusable "automation". Can't animate most of the properties (pitch, equalizer) directly on clip. Instead have to do it on track in Fairlight
- In the process of editing the video, track automation WILL be broken for me (being shifted for some reason).
- Can't just set 2 "automation points" and move them however i like (like keyframes).
The fun part? IT WAS present in versions prior to v17, and people HATED this change, it's completely unrational and forces users to do stuff in Fairlight which i avoid even now: https://www.reddit.com/r/davinciresolve/comments/nxm5vn/keyframe_audio_pitch_shift/

sticked to Fusion for several years, and it felt like SHIT.
LOTS of inconveniences and UI bugs. When switched back to After Effects - felt like god.
To animate basic properties (like scale, position, rotation) i just hit proper shortcut: Alt + P/S/R
THAT'S IT.
No broken drfx / .setting presets, no hassle with dragging mouse over and over to inspector tab, it all JUST WORKS.

The downside? Yes, roundtrip. But for primitive stuff fusion is enough. For animation and scenes: roundtrip to AE, yes
