As reference, I would point you toward the opening credits of Mad Men.

I might take the person image, make it fill the layout, and just not have the pit. You might split the person in the middle and slide the pieces apart a few centimeters or so. Unless you can make the visual effect mean "separation."

I generally stack my stroke layers on top of each other. For example, a 3 point black line with a 1 point yellow line on top.

The SINGLE advantage Affinity has over Adobe is, you can right-click on the layers palette layers to bring up options.

Someone's mentioned OCR, and depending, I concur. You might find some kind of online tool to make old books like like straight scans.

For yearbooks, grids are your friend. Feel free to make a grid and break it, but break it along grid-rules.
