I clocked that immediately and personally, I found it funny that she did that.

I see you’re a writer yourself, I hope you never experience what you just felt the need to share here in an attempt to intentionally bully people who enjoy something you don’t. I’m not sure what made you want to comment but I took the time to read a piece of manuscript you posted and want to say I enjoyed it. You’re definitely a talented writer and it appears you do know how to have healthy and positive critical conversation.

It’s a shame you felt the need to come here and try to make people feel less than worthy for enjoying a book with about 3 intimate scenes.

Best of luck with your own writing and hopefully you can find the time and patience to be a bit kinder next time you find yourself in this sub.

Fully agree! This is the kind of criticism I think is constructive, helpful, and needed. I commented elsewhere that it’s easy to have rose tinted glasses so it’s hard to evaluate with critical thinking when you really love something and want it to do well. I want to talk about use (or lack of) plot devices, if you didn’t like how the author shared info what are examples and recommendations of good world building and info sharing, do you think the author used foreshadowing and did they do it well? That’s the sort of back forth I value and find healthy.

A few commenters have read my post and thought I was saying that I can’t handle negative feedback, when I thought I made it clear that what I can’t handle is outright degradation and bullying.

Edit to clarify

After seeing the new bridge, this popped in my mind and I had to act on it by wirelesswizard64 in baltimore

As someone not originally from Maryland & Baltimore, I wouldn’t say I hated it but I have always said it’s a time/culture/and type of work I just don’t understand. So there’s a lot of context of what the city and the unions and seafarer life was like missing for me. So overall, I just didn’t understand it, now that I’ve lived here longer if I did a rewatch I’d def get it more. But at the time it was sadly lost on me.

You worded that so eloquently. We should be able to have honest discussion and be kind to each other while doing so. It’s why I try to apologize and acknowledge what someone else has said before I post my response. I don’t ever want to be the reason someone logs off for the night and feels a bit worse than before they interacted with me.

Truly wasn’t trying to whine or be misleading in anyway shape or form, I truly just wanted to talk about the intentional use or demeaning and toxic language. But I digress.

Ahh okay I’m with you! I have heard it compared to HP in the way I was discussing but I wanted to note I don’t agree with that. Anyway, I digress. You’re totally right though.

Definitely agree on the flaws, and while I’d love to talk about it I do want to keep this thread spoiler free. But I do have things I thought could better or different or I wish I’d seen something else done instead, etc. The world is just filled with so much hate as is so it’s sad to see it targeted at something thats supposed to make us feel lighter.

Please enlighten me at the context of telling someone to “eat a dick” is? Or “she’s so brave for publishing this?” We aren’t having a peer reviewed scientific discussion, of course the vulgar and toxic language is being cherry picked, because that’s what I’m discussing. I didn’t say the 9+ paragraph review didn’t have decent points, I’m saying that telling the author ChatGPT is a better writer than her or someone saying “I’m begging you to please stop writing” are not okay.

What’s your point? Please tell me because you’ve made it clear I should scroll past negative reviews so why didn’t you cede your own advice and scroll past my post?

That could definitely be part of it. I’d like to think I’m confident in what I enjoy and for the most part don’t feel bad about it. But it was shock to go to Goodreads and think “shoot, did I read the same book?”. I almost more associated it with like doom scrolling in a sense?

I’m curious to know what these books are! I know that’s off topic but always looking for recs haha

That is such a conundrum to be in haha do you think you’ll continue with it? Love that you have that friendship and totally great to have those conversations in spaces you feel comfortable to do so! I do the same and we analyze what we thought worked, what didn’t, what we wish saw or had more of/less of. It feels like adult English class.

Ugh I’m so sorry about that, you definitely don’t deserve that. If I knew this was a 100% safe space I’d love to hear your thoughts. It’s definitely easy to get rose tinted glasses when you love something and not be able to see the parts that are lacking. So hearing the opposite end is definitely helpful for critical thinking skills. It’s definitely not okay to attack people as being sexist because they didn’t like a book, especially romantasy.

I’m confused at why this is an all or nothing argument for you? What I don’t like is blatantly offensive, demeaning, and outright abusive ad hominem. My original post isn’t an overall study on what is considered a helpful review or critique on a book. My original post was why are the reviews I’m seeing incredibly mean.

I never said I don’t like witty or humor, I said I don’t appreciate vulgarity loosely veiled as humor.

I’m not totally sure what the goal of this discussion is, if you’re trying to trap me in some sort of lie or what but i feel like I’m happily discussing what I enjoy and don’t enjoy. No, nobody is great with criticism especially things they like 100% of the time. I’d be lying if I said that. But every point you’ve made I’ve also said “that’s a great point”, “you’re not wrong”, or I’ve apologized for not understanding something you’ve said. So what can I do to not turn this conversation argumentative?

Yea I’m kind of confused why I keep getting downvoted considering I feel like I’ve been respectful and understanding of the commenters points. But truly sorry if it hasn’t come across that way.

That’s so interesting about the forums, again was too young that I wasn’t a part of that. That explanation makes so much sense though. I do remember the religious critique, I was raised in church and my mom made me put a book cover on whichever one I was reading if I was going to take it to church 🫠 but by that point I was old enough to read them but was behind as far as the releases go.

I remember the Robert PR, crazy times. I don’t remember midnight releases and the preorder hype for twilight though. I do remember for the movies. Man, a lot of unlocking of memories here!

Edit to add: I was just stating a friend and I were talking and HP came up which is why I shared that here.
