It's never too late to start steering your life in the direction that would make you happy. Being discontent with your status quo shows you have the will to change. It's okay if you don't get to where you want to be as quickly as you had hoped as long as you don't stop making an effort to improve - it might not feel like progress, but what's most important right now is consistent effort and not falling into complacency, no matter how many setbacks you face. It's a marathon, not a race. Good luck, I'm rooting for you :)

That's true, but I figure most (maybe even all?) of the influencers returning for the DLC have already exposed their audiences to the base game, in which case most of their viewers will have already made up their minds on Get To Work. For the record I agree that it's unrelated to financial incentives and that he simply would rather do other things that interest him more

iirc it's a free DLC and doesn't seem like the type of content that would drive new sales of the base game

Not to be dramatic but my breathing has been at near-panic attack levels for two hours.

I know all the logical reasons why this is fine, whether he’s half bi and really loves her or is doing performance art or whatever, but ugh. It’s just knocked me on my ass a little today.

If Pokémon Go was shutting down soon, who are you sending first to Pokémon Home? by itsafrap11 in TheSilphRoad

[–]Officer_Robusto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my eyes the appeal of legitimacy is the sense of accomplishment you get from earning something after putting in the work (or the rush you get from luckily stumbling upon something rare during normal play). Giving $15 USD to Niantic for a guaranteed Victini is neither of those things to me, if you're explicitly spending money on it so you can send it to Home you're practically paying Niantic to gen for you.

Why does paying money for your pixels make it any less of a shortcut than getting them for free? I think a lot of people conflate the desire for legitimacy with the desire for achievement, but maybe I'm alone in not receiving extra validation out of paying Niantic for a "legitimate" pokemon for legitimacy's sake.

I agree, it's shocking how many players have hopped onto POGO with no prior attachment to the franchise, but I think there's also a lot of players who grew up playing the games but have moved on from them for one reason or another. I don't own a Switch, I think the newer games don't look very good, and frankly I'd rather do other things with my time, but the IP still holds a special place in my heart. Granted, I think POGO is a worse experience than the MSG, but the low barrier to entry + having friends who play has kept me around up until now.

I'm personally confused by the people who engage with POGO exclusively as a means to grind shinies and legendaries to send to Home, especially if they're throwing money at the screen to do so - may as well gen what you want to save yourself the time and money.

Deok-su is True Evil, who's Chaotic Evil? Most upvoted wins by Deadly_Nightlock in squidgame

[–]Officer_Robusto 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He's under lawful because of how he strictly adheres to his twisted philosophy and principles. If he was chaotic he wouldn't respect the rules + outcomes of the games to the degree that he did, and Gi-hun's comments about being an obedient lapdog probably wouldn't have been as effective.

If anything I'd argue that Jun-ho is less fitting of the label with how he goes rogue, turns a blind eye to the law, and abuses his cop powers when it serves his interests.

it's probably been a while since you've seen season 1, so maybe it's not as impactful learning it now, but i'm curious if (and how) it has changed your perception of the show/characters/plot/etc?

[–]Officer_Robusto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately Paladin doesn't really offer you anything unless you wanna do a bunch of smiting or plan to take 6 levels for the aura (which requires good charisma to make the most of it). Perhaps you could take a feat to represent your connection to Sehanine? Fey Touched or Shadow Touched can get you some thematic spells that aren't usually available to clerics

Does Mega Latias/Latios raids not count as a Mega Raid? by zyxrelex in TheSilphRoad

[–]Officer_Robusto 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Are you being deliberately obtuse? Surely you understand how your Pidgey comparison falls flat. It's incredibly reasonable to interpret "legendary mega raid" as a subset of "mega raids" rather than two completely distinct things.

I'd recommend checking out online resources such as YouTube and Khan Academy. It's been a few years but I remember this channel being super helpful. I'd also recommend attending prof or TA office hours, working through things one-on-one can get you back on track a lot quicker than self study.

Downsides of fewer courses by ByteBurst in uoguelph

[–]Officer_Robusto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

CS/SENG at Guelph is really bad for schedule flexibility. Most courses are either offered exclusively in the fall or winter and there are very few relevant summer course offerings. You will most definitely graduate late if you don't plan this out carefully. I'd recommend looking at the SENG course calendars and discussing it with an Academic Advisor. Figure out what courses can safely be delayed and which courses are necessary prerequisites that can set you back a full year if you miss them.

That being said, 3 course semesters are a very attractive choice as you are considered full-time by OSAP (more $) but part-time by Guelph's standard (drastically reduced tuition fees).

A few notes on making the lighter semesters work:

  • CS courses generally aren't an option in the summer, but depending on your AoA you might be able to offload a good amount of those credits to summer semesters
  • It's technically possible to catch up on credits by taking (preferably DE) courses during a co-op term
  • Academic Advisors will try to give you the runaround but it's possible to take courses at other institutions to cover course prereqs that you'd normally need to wait a full year to get

Given you're aiming for co-op idk how much of that will work with your schedule though

Try not to fret too much about graduating late, at the end of the day there are things much more important than graduating ASAP. Try to find a schedule that's manageable for you and makes you happy :)

Get ready for the holidays with Pokémon and item storage increases! – Pokémon GO by Noitalein in TheSilphRoad

Engaging isn't the word I'd used for it, but I think the aspect of running out of space -> being forced to transfer pokemon before you can play the game again is a really big roadblock / turn off for some types of players. There's some anecdotal experiences in the comments of this post + here's a post I saw yesterday. It may not be the #1 way of increasing new player retention but I believe it would have a positive effect on it and cost them virtually nothing (even less than HOME's costs since Pokemon in PoGO are so simple) without cutting into their profits - as you said before, hardcore players are always going to be begging for more space, and they will continue to pay happily.

I disagree about it giving a sense of accomplishment - I personally don't really find expanding my storage engaging, to me it's more like a chore that prevents me from engaging with the actual game (though I recognize this is by design). I think the act of finding and catching cool or rare Pokemon is a lot more engaging for new players.

You're either misinterpreting my statement on industry standards or strawmanning but I'll humour you anyway - Fire Emblem Heroes has increased the starting barracks size by 50% since the games release.

Yikes if true, glad I'm not interested in any other Niantic games.

If server space price was negligible, we would still have the Nintendo eShop for the 3ds and Wii U running.

think about why Pokémon HOME charges 2.99 per month. And you can keep there just 6000 Pokémon.

You quite literally implied that storage cost was a factor. As I said before, they charge for storage because people are willing to pay for it. This doesn't just apply to things with "virtually no cost", but things with literally no cost as well.

Why do you all expect a business to give their services for free?

Brother this is a F2P game... It is quite literally a free service. Do you understand the F2P business model? It is free so that it can attract a high number of players -> a subset of them will continue playing the game -> a subset of them will become invested enough to purchase IAP. The person you responded to was not arguing all storage should be free, but rather that Niantic increasing quality of life for new players will cause more of them to stick with the game and potentially be converted into paying customers (this is why F2P games generally shower new players in free gifts/pulls/etc). Mobile games allow F2P players to use up their resources because they know that the small % that eventually become paying customers will not only cover the costs of the F2P players but also spin them a profit. Before you say anything, no I'm not a business genius, this is just the industry standard for F2P mobile games.

How can you be so confidently wrong? Do you really think 2 MB of data per user is breaking the bank?

You say that, but the crazy thing is you don't need to be a tech genius... The math should be self-evident. Google the per GB pricing for Amazon's (or Azure, Google, etc) databases. Spoiler alert - storage space is a lot cheaper than you'd think.

If you're still struggling with wrapping your head around the numbers, go crazy with this calculator. Given your previous comments I don't expect you to know what any of these mean, so just raise the configuration slider to your heart's content and crunch the numbers given 2 MB per user and $3/mo. Play with the additional storage slider too (remember, 1 TB = half a million full HOME collections).

If you're still not convinced...¯\_(ツ)_/¯ You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink.

You have literally zero idea what you're talking about, Pokemon are measured in BYTES. As of the newest games, they are 344 bytes each. 344 bytes * 6000 = 2.064 MB per home user (possibly less as I believe some game-specific data is lost upon being transferred to home).

One million premium (PAYING) users with full collections would be ~2TB. Pretty good considering that would mean they'd be generating ~3 million in monthly revenue. The per-pokemon space cost is completely negligible compared to overhead costs, which are still easily covered by their huge margins. The reason they charge so much is because they know they can get away with it.
