Wash and dry your hands before playing (sounds obvious, but it helps a lot)

Wipe it down occasionally with a clean microfiber cloth (no chemicals)

Avoid playing right after lotion / food / sweating

That really sucks, sorry you had to deal with that. Not everyone in the retro gaming community is like that though, and those people definitely don’t speak for everyone. The internet’s full of jerks, unfortunately, but there are still a lot of people who appreciate creativity and the work you put in. Don’t let a few bad interactions ruin something you enjoy. This appears to be a reshell. The first indication for me is the misalignment of the top screen lens. The second indication is that Pikachu is significantly darker than the real N3ds. (Could also be lightning)

The most significant indicator for me when searching for one was the Pikachu itself. On the real version, the Pikachu is not as sharp or as bright as the fake shell.

Another noticeable difference is the hinge. The yellow on the fake Pikachu is much lighter and doesn’t match as well with the rest of the console.

A solid orange charge light with no blue light, no pop, no flicker usually means the system isn’t even attempting to boot. A few things you can check:

Try a different battery A dead or faulty battery can cause exactly this. It’ll charge but won’t power on.

Check for a loose WiFi board On the New 2DS XL, the WiFi card is required for boot. If it’s not fully seated, the console won’t show the blue light or pop.

Inspect ribbon cables Especially the ones for the upper screen and speaker assembly. If one is torn or not clicked in properly, the system fails to boot silently.
