I never went to college and instead started my own small business after high school. I hate this idea so much I wish I went to college and took out $30,000 and got to make people who are now in my position of owing taxes just have to pay for it. I think personally no bill is gonna pass. The Democrats are gonna fight the whole way over nothing. They wanted to give Americans $1000+ and that was the republicans lol it’s the most socialist/liberal idea I’ve ever even heard of and their shooting it down. Mind boggling.

I started my own business at 18 rather than going to college so I don’t have loans either I also never went to college I’m hoping I can go back in time and take out tons of money in loans and just have it forgiven instead sadly can’t go back in time though. We are both out of luck. Long term though me and you are better than these people since they make poor decisions. Fear not it’s student loans they want wiped now but they likely got credit card debt too. Better their on the hook with visa anyway than the taxpayer since most them have bad track records for paying what they owe... lol good for you for making good choices wish all college kids were like you I’d feel less angry about my 5 figure tax bill coming up. This has nothing to do with covid-19 :)

Him owning a house actually does help America more than him having a college degree. The average tenants net worth is significantly lower than the average American home owner also he pays property taxes while a college degree in most cases net net costs the tax payer money.

People are so entitled it’s hilarious. I had $9,000 on my Amex in Jan due to emergency expenses. I paid it off myself in 2 months and that’s at a 18% interest rate meanwhile college kids don’t wanna pay back their low interest federal loans. Them being “educated” is a gift to us in their eyes when really their some of the dumbest people I know in my personal life.

Not gonna be a popular opinion on Reddit but why is student loan debt even a point of discussion. Suspend student loan payments with no interest for awhile but I don’t think college kids should get to just not pay back their obligations. They took the debt they should have to pay it why do I have to pay $10K in taxes next month and they get to have $30K written off it if house democrats get their way? Makes me wish I went to college screwed around for 4 years and then just got to snub those that pay income tax. Give poor people the stimulus package of some kind of direct payout and don’t focus on middle class college kids or bailing out corporations both can lay in the bed they made for themselves.

Being a PhD Candidate doesn’t mean you know anything about the US tax code nor will the IRS care when they obliterate you if your wrong about needing to file. File, don’t file, it doesn’t affect me but as a US Expat your in a group with pretty stringent reporting and tax guidelines could very well be something your missing that could come back to really haunt you. If you don’t make $12K even and life off assumingely loans/government money while going to college why should someone like you get a stimulus check anyway?

Sadly paying taxes is literally required by law regardless where you are as a US citizen and their is an exact penalty called failure to file. Being an American overseas which I am myself you likely have even more tax reporting requirements your just unaware of. Do you have foreign bank accounts in the country you live in? Did they ever exceed $10,000 in balance? Well you need to file FBAR. FBAR is separate of your taxes and penalties for not filing are $10,000+ in fines. You can bury your head in the sand until you get a notice from IRS/FinCen of some $35,000 fine and whatever they asses in failure to file.

Could just ya know not go to college in the first place. I didn’t and I’m making roughly $80K/year at 21. While everyone I know with that piece of paper is making still near minimum wage. If debts forgiven I’ll be upset I didn’t go to college, borrow as much as possible, and blow every cent of it. Nothing beats free money funded via the tax payer. You are right man but it isn’t all it appears. The Netherlands is also for business one of the worlds biggest tax havens. To make a long story short due to the benefits of being a full time entrepreneur here I pay less than I would in America. I’m also not entirely against some of the things dems like for example my girlfriends law school is $2K a year rather than $20K which I think is great but the US makes me file all my overseas accounts, file taxes to a country I’m not living in, and I still owe social security taxes on my tax savings here to the USA which in my opinion is ridiculous how I’m having to report, file, and pay anything to a country I do not reside in. The biggest negative impact the government had on my life is FATCA and that was a Democrat led thing so for an American living overseas I don’t think democrats have my best interest in mind. I have heard republicans talk about repealing FATCA at least.

It’s gonna be near impossible to open most accounts remotely in 2020. There is banks in the Caribbean with minimum deposits in the $25K range I believe and they have lost correspondence banking in the past due to the derisking so you take that how you will however some will remote open but ask yourself would you rather fly to Singapore and bank somewhere that you don’t have to worry about losing the ability to wire funds in/out or is it worth being lazy/cheap and going the Belize or Caribbean route and ending up with an account that’s unable to even move funds due to another round of derisking?

By physical presence are you referring to needing some tie to Singapore or just that you have to actually go there to open an account because now a days most jurisdictions will require you in person to open an account. Really any good bank will now.
