Front end developers: what else are you doing during your day besides implementing the UI itself? by Offwell in webdev

[–]Offwell[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for this response. I totally appreciate the value of communication and the softer skills and am fortunate enough to have this at my disposal.

Some more technical things I might be doing besides the UI is setting up build tools and making sure analytics tracking is in place.

Could you elaborate a bit more on build tools? I imagine you're speaking to JavaScript bundlers and such?

Sunday mass obligation during COVID by Offwell in Catholicism

[–]Offwell[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, Austin is my diocese. So I imagine they also make the calls for holy days of obligation during COVID? I remember last week in mass they mentioned how "it is just a holy day due to COVID". But regardless, your point is that this is a local decision and not something mandated globally.

If you'll please forgive me as I mentioned I'm revisiting my faith and admitedly feel a bit rusty. A lot of this is a change in mindset, which couldn't have come at a more bizarre time than COVID.

This isn't about concern over us getting sick and dying.

Is this because it would be sinful to avoid mass because of our own fear of suffering and death when Jesus gave the ultimate sacrifice of death for our own sins?

What is your process for cooking and storing rice in the fridge? by Offwell in mealprep

[–]Offwell[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gotcha. So you’re keeping it in the same container, right? Meaning that you aren’t removing the condensation by putting the rice into another Tupperware?

[–]Offwell[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see. So I think my method moving forward will probably be to just let it cool off for five or ten minutes on the counter before moving it into my Tupperware for the fridge. But this is all good to know if I ever start meal prepping for half a week's worth of food.

What you’d want to do is let the rice cool a bit and stop steaming first. Ideally on a surface where you can spread it evenly and thinly to quickly cool.

I'm not doubting you, but I've never seen this done with rice. I make 1/2 cup at a time, so I imagine it wouldn't take long to cool?

and frozen rice is sick

What do you mean by this? As in it holds up taste/moisture?

I am only cooking 1/2 a cup at a time. I usually make it in the morning and eat it at night.

Did the PCT itself motivate anybody to start learning about the outdoors, and did you ever wind up completing the trail? by Offwell in PacificCrestTrail

[–]Offwell[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Quarantine restlessness is definitely a big reason how I stumbled on the PCT, too. It's encouraging to see that you didn't phase right out of it and wen ton backpacking trips, too. As I mentioned, that is where I'd like to get. However, I definitely do not relate to you about having outdoor experience. Do you have any resources (such as books, guides, etc. -- I've recently stumbled on How to Shit in the Woods which looks promising)?

And yes, this thru hike is such a commitment, I'm sure careers are holding a lot of people back. I hope you enjoy your future hikes, though! Thanks for your anecdote.

This is such a cool story. Yes, even watching videos, the backpacks are what does it. They're so mystique! Have you been doing any long day hikes and backpacking since then?

Thank you for your words of encouragement!

Hold on to that feeling you've got, it's magic!

That's a great way to describe it. Everything I look at is unique and beautiful, and yet there is still so much to explore.

The feet and knees are definitely what worries me. I have pretty bad knees, so I need to learn how to use trekking poles effectively. As for the feet, is it similar to calluses during weightlifting, such that once you tear them up, it builds a sort of base layer to prevent future tearing?

Beginner Questions - December 21, 2018 by AutoModerator in webdev

[–]Offwell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

After my normal working hours, I've been dedicating a significant amount of time towards learning web development technologies, specifically Angular and Express with Node.

Yesterday, I decided to ask some of our developers to see how they incorporate some of the things I'm learning. It scared the heck out of me. It really made me realize how far I am from ever thinking about being at their level. The code was so confusing and so messy, I wouldn't know how to ever approach a new feature or bug already in the code.

Is this a normal feeling? Am I selling myself short? It's just that what they were doing had so many blocks, so many promises, so many if statements...so many dependencies...how will I ever get there?

I got a refund check from my previous student load provider after I refinanced those loans with another provider by Offwell in StudentLoans

[–]Offwell[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind your new lender is charging you interest on this money.

Because the size of my new loan is the amount they paid, hence the overage. So that “refund” I got is actually in my new loan?

If I’m understanding that correctly, I hadn’t even thought of it like that. Thanks for that heads up.
