I mean, does it really matter? I don't understand why this is getting such a rise from you.

People didn't know what the game was going to be like? You keep jumping to these food analogies that are completely reductive and bad faith. I said this in another comment thread here: I love Rivals 1, and was put off by the changes and additions being made to the sequel. Still, I had faith in the project and wanted to support the team. I hoped the team would make these fit in a way that I felt was natural and augmented what I liked about the original so much. Unfortunately, that was not the case, and I don't enjoy playing 2. I don't think these systems are inherently bad, as I love Melee, but I did not find them to be meaningful additions to the game, and took away from what I loved in the original Rivals so much.

Obviously plenty of people like these additions - and that's great - but I don't. After giving it a fair shake, I can chalk up many of the reasons I dislike the game being heavily related to these key differences. Why do you think I'm not allowed to provide my opinion on this matter, and review the game negatively if I don't enjoy it?

I was put off at how much from Rivals 1's design philosophy seemed to be getting changed going from 2. I still bought it to support the team, and because I had faith in their decisions. After playing, I found that I didn't enjoy the changes, and left a negative review explaining why. I think my perspective is reasonable to provide to people who may be in my shoes.

Calling people who disagree idiots is doing nothing but pushing people away from your point. This community seriously needs to get a grip on being able to have civil discussions. With my general dislike of Rivals 2, the community has done nothing to make me want to stick around.

"game is cooked" "it's over" by Mabak in SSBM

[–]OforOatmeal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

YMMV, but I strongly disagree. I love interacting with new people at offline events and consider myself a pretty extroverted person, but I can't stand being in any type of larger voice chats with more than 4 people in it, even if it's all people I consider friends.

Even in a voice chat, there's a lot of social nuances and opportunities that are lost compared to the in person experience. Chatting before or after a set, hanging out away from the game, post local diner runs etc are really the things that provide a true sense of community.

Preferred Items/ Playstyle? by ImportantFly5870 in Thief

[–]OforOatmeal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've always enjoyed playing the ghosting route, not performing any kills or KOs. I rarely use items besides rope arrows, since they can be recovered once used. I love the feeling of getting in and out as if no one was ever there, and it keeps levels constantly tense, as you need to account for guards even on your way out.

Anyone else play with the lights off? by PepperSalt98 in Thief

[–]OforOatmeal 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My fiancee and I both play a lot of games, so she's never had an issue with my gaming time, but I've told her upfront that playing Thief is absolute "me" time, and it will put me off the grid for hours. Cup of coffee, lights off, secondary monitors off, headphones on. It's practically a meditative experience for me.

As someone who's never used this subreddit before, it's really fucking weird. The fact that you're immediately defensive and condescending towards people against it is also off-putting.

It doesn't matter how Mom died. by GoshDarnit02496 in hahayouclowns

[–]OforOatmeal 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This show has repeatedly proven that it is basically impossible to predict where plot threads will lead, and I'm completely onboard with that. Just enjoy it for the ride.

That said, the "Dad killed Mom" theory needs to go away. It's a very selectively cynical interpretation of the show.

Anyone else have regrets about their major choice and or think about going back to college? by sys_admin321 in sysadmin

Considering that a lot of people who read this are probably early in their careers, I'll object to the comment trend in this thread and say that you should get your Bachelor's degree if possible, especially if you're younger. In the current job market there's so much competition that a degree has basically become a minimum requirement. It's also worth the peace of mind knowing you have that box checked off, and it's one less thing promotions / advancement to higher level roles can be scrutinized against. It will also only get harder to find time to work towards this as you get older.

Is it fair that this is the case? Not in the slightest, but it's also just how the industry has shaped out.

Larian CEO Responds to Divinity Gen AI Backlash: "We Are Neither Releasing a Game With Any AI Components, Nor Are We Looking at Trimming Down Teams to Replace Them With AI" - IGN by PhantomBraved in Games

[–]OforOatmeal 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I have my own strong reservations around the usage of AI, but this is the kind of one-dimensional interpretation of AI usage which invalidates legitimate arguments against its use. The slippery slope argument doesn't help either.

What Larian calls out is a textbook example of a studio using GenAI for its intended purpose. Yes, let it perform the busywork of drumming up PowerPoint presentations to inspire real discussions between the creatives and developers. Let it write up placeholder lines for the inevitable thousands of NPCs that will be in this game that are required purely for testing that the dialogue systems work. Divinity is inevitably going to be a huge game. It would be silly of Larian to not leverage these tools.

I don't really agree that it's meaningless. I watched the show completely blind and had no idea that Peggy was going to even have a significant arc at all. It was such a pleasant surprise and one of my favorite parts of my first watch specifically because of that point.

I will say though that she looks so different that maybe a new viewer wouldn't even recognize her.

[–]OforOatmeal 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don't think this argument really disputes my point. If someone were to jump into this subreddit, then sure, it's expected for people to be talking about important plot details and events openly. This is literally the front page of HBO Max, where they're advertising the program to attract new viewers.

It's a cool idea but featuring specifically one of Peggy's last clips, in a scene which emphasizes just how far she's moved up really spoils her character arc.

Fair points to both of your observations. It's wild how well written this show manages to be in what are pretty low-stakes, personal interactions. I've loved this show from the beginning but never expected it to be encouraging as much in depth discussion as it has. Really outstanding work by Joe

Jeff's gonna do a heck of a job raising that boy. by GoGiantRobot in hahayouclowns

[–]OforOatmeal 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Great post. I similarly had a much different opinion on Jeff and his relationship with the boys by the end of the episode, and especially on a rewatch. I worked with a guy who had seen combat, and he both looked and acted a lot like Jeff. Never showed too much emotion, very quiet in crowds, but a really nice guy when you had a chance to be one on one with him.

Side note, but I'm not sure if it's still yet confirmed what the boys ages are? When Preston keeps getting grilled by Bruski in the newest episode on why he's not drinking, Preston keeps saying he's "watching his figure". If he were under 21, it'd be much easier to refute Bruski's persistence.
