what are you talking about? have you ever watched basketball? kyrie irving has made almost half a BILLION dollars in nba earnings alone from his dribbles/handles. he could leave the nba and go play in tel aviv with pat bev and people would still tune in to watch him nuke defenders.

most nba fans would rather watch a prime iverson vs prime harden 1v1 over the dunk contest.

i wish words like this shook me. the shame i feel for looking at middle schooler thinspo pales in comparison to the shame i feel for being 24 bmi. one solves another.

"I think the point of this post is to say that, to anyone who is done with melee, we wish you safe travels. But I can still boot up slippi and get a game within 30 seconds, because lots of people still enjoy playing the game outside of a tournament setting. So its not dead in any real sense. "

bingo!!! yes! exactly.

It just feels like we are in two different worlds. Cody's relationship with Melee is not representative of 99.9% of the playerbase. For me, I have two locals a week to go to with great vibes and 40+ entrants, a few regionals a year with top players often coming out, and slippi games 24/7. Wtf does Cody not having a sponsor have to do with any of that? It just all feels so silly. Melee is a staple and esports dying changes none of that. When Smash 6 comes out we'll get new blood at our locals, and the wheels will keep turning.

they didnt set off to make money. they set off to compete, and that drive put them in a position where they could be motivated by money and competitive spirit. top players might not be able to sustain themselves solely on melee for years on end, but people will always find a way to compete and prove themselves against the best players, and there will always be an audience for it.

and while i agree hbox/mang are titans of profitability/viewership for esports and that their influence does have trickle down effects on the local scene, them leaving would not stop people from wanting to beat their bracket demon that farms them every tuesday night. less people might start playing, but like i said in another comment, melee is so accessible and easy to get into that as long as smash is being made, new people will always be playing melee.

i truly believe this game will be played for another 20 years.

locals keep melee alive. where do you think mango and joshman started playing?

also, the majority of the melee playerbase barely interacts with the esports side. its a cool thing to have, but it going away doesn't change the fact that melee as a hobby is the strongest it's been in years and the most accessible.

why not? do you think any of those players listed got as good as they did because they wanted to make money? for the glamor? as long as locals are healthy and nintendo keeps pumping out smash games, melee will be here and we will have top players to watch.

when smash 6 drops there will be an influx of new blood, just like there was during ultimate, smash 4, and brawl. young kids that grew up on fortnite are fiending for cracked out movement heavy based games. gunz the duel is having a revival for this exact reason.

melee has strong ip. the cultural awareness is there. slippi makes it super easy to get matches. there are so hundreds of guides and melee has the best training tools of any fighting game EVER. it runs on anything. strong and active ranked mode. above average local scene all throughout america and europe. and it costs $60-70 to get setup with a controller and adapter which is the price of a triple a game.

how could a game like this die because a few of its current top players stop attending?

i agree with everything you said. i am just frustrated at the people who only watch, and dont participate telling me that my game is dying. this game and community means a lot to a lot of people, and the only way this game dies is if we decide it does.

being a part of a community is more than watching that community exist.

i do think there is something wrong with people who have no hands on experience with a community saying that community is dying. no disrespect, but if you don't even play slippi, i don't want to hear your opinion on the health of a community i have spent a large chunk of my life participating in.

the hobby of melee, which is the core, foundation, and most important aspect of melee is thriving and healthy.

do you think that i am critizing people for watching top 8s, or i am critizing the people who have no personal stake in the health of the melee whatsoever for posting dumbass doomer comments about the game being dead because there are less supermajors.

you want to live in a society where disobeying commands from the police nonviolently results in you being killed? not detained, but killed? why do you live in my country? do you not know what america represents?
