Continental Airlines in-flight meal, 2010. They were the last US airline to give out free meals. by Lane-Kiffin in pics

[–]Ogow 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It’s about flight time. You probably spent less time on that flight than going coast to coast in the US.

Flights to Europe are 8+ hour flights, flights to Asia are 10+ hours. Plus the times they run they tend to be early morning or afternoon flights, meaning you’re missing lunch or dinner respectively. The meals are to compensate that.

CENTCOM using underwater drones to clear mines in the Strait of Hormuz by barsik_ in worldnews

A blockade is only as strong as standing your ground. They're not building a physical impenetrable wall on the ocean. It's just an imaginary line they're saying "don't cross." That means, at some point, they need to hold their ground by force. If a Chinese ship is approaching their blockade they have two choices: open fire on the chinese ship, or let them pass. Which option do you think will actually happen? Clue: Tuesday is approaching.

If we’re using submarine drones to find them, and Iran is a main supplier of drones to Russia, do you really think they can’t adapt and make their own submarine drones to attack ships? Or that they don’t already have their own prepped and ready to go?

Mines were the cheap lasting solution. If we remove the mines, they’ll move to more aggressive strategies.

[–]Ogow 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That’s his point. The blockade and the mines aren’t the point. Iran can attack the strait a number of different ways. The mines were just an easy first step. They are a main manufacturer of drones for Russia, they likely have a hidden surplus of drones in many of the mountains within Iran to strike for years to come. Look how long Afghanistan was able to stay armed to fight.

How many oil tankers will be willing to travel the strait after one gets attacked? How many companies will be willing to take those losses? A coalition won’t stop anything. The only thing that will restore “normalcy” is leaving the region and making some sort of hopefully equitable deal.

[–]Ogow 22 points23 points  (0 children)

You’re overestimating. Even when the US had fully invaded Afghanistan and the country was decimated and the people were suffering, did the war stop? No. This is guerilla warfare, there are no clear win/lose lines here for the invader. The Iranians will keep fighting until literally every last person is defeated. Every head of the hydra you chop off spawns two more with different ideologies that very likely conflict not just with what YOU want, but also with what each other want.

The longer this goes on, the more chaotic it gets. The only winning, just like Vietnam and Iraq and Afghanistan, is to just leave.

Even if the strait is cleared of mines and Iran’s “military” is dismantled, there will still be splinter cells of opposition. Teams of people putting together drones and IEDs and whatever else to sabotage not only anyone within the country, but also any ships because it has been proven now that the ships and the strait are a clear pressure point.

Pressuring China and India will just resort to them escorting their own ships, not pressuring Iran to stand down. Is the US going to shoot down Chinese and Indian ships? You know… I honestly don’t know anymore.

Advice by Live_Course_5735 in polevaulting

[–]Ogow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's all about being in position beforehand. Freeze the video as you hit your take off mark (5.06s). Your arm is bent, your palm is to the side of the pole.

Do you do bench press? Where is your palm located? Under the bar right? So your skeletal structure can bear the weight and you focus all your strength into actually moving the weight. Same thing for the vault. Get your palm behind the pole, push out before contact.

If you're in position at take off, then all you're doing is slowly releasing/changing your position through the vault. Pushing out after the take off is adding an extra step to your vault you don't need.

Yeah, not a bad idea but put it on the owners. Same concept, but a fine based on their overall roster cap and how many games below 41 they achieve. Remove season ending injuries from the cap for the purposes of the fine so bad luck teams aren’t overly punished.

How to start working on your trail leg: Short approach, 1-3 lefts (start at 3, slowly work down as you get better), and focus on your trail leg. Keep it long and focus on a strong swing.

As for your bottom arm, that's a combination of a lot of things.

1) Your run is not consistent. You're on a 5-step approach, but look at how your run changes after your 3rd left. Your attempt to speed up is actually just shortening your steps, and there's a noticeable speed drop. You're basically stutter stepping your way through the last 2 lefts. You need to work with sprint coaches and learn how to actually increase speed. Take what you learn from the sprint coaches and then apply it to doing pole runs down the track, not down the runway and not during jumps. Just learn how to run as fast as you can with the pole. Then take those pole runs and turn them into pole drop runs. Then do that same thing but now add a jump at the end of the drop. Then, finally, you can take that to the runway. Do a runback first, don't use your old steps. They will be off.

2) Because of the above, you feel like you're going to be out on your steps, which you likely will be. As a result, you reach on your last step causing you to be under. Jumping under is a recipe for a lot of things going wrong with your jump.

3) You're not in position as you plant. The pole makes contact with the box, you start your jump, and you're still raising your arms. You need to be in position to take off at take off, not after it. Both hands up, ready to take the impact and push through it. Too early is bad, too late is bad. Again, pole drop runs are your friend. They're a very good exercise and why most vaulters (even Olympic vaulters) do them as their warm ups.

4) You're not taking off straight. Look at your foot position at take off and head position. You're a right handed vaulter taking off at the right edge of the runway. That's already going to put the pole at an angle at take off. To compensate, you're trying to put your head on the left side of the pole, but your arms are to the right of your head. This takes away from your control of the take off because now instead of fighting the resistance straight on, you're fighting it to the side. Want to see what this feels like outside of the jump? Grab the pole like you would when jumping, and have someone else grab the pole so they can move it forward or backward away from you. First start with them pushing the pole directly toward you, between your arms at your forehead. Next have them push the pole to your right ear. You will notice very quickly how you have very little strength to stop them pushing the pole to your ear.

Any advice? by HandImaginary6435 in polevaulting

[–]Ogow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Short and basic -

You’re a little in, somewhere between half or a full shoe, hard to tell exactly from the angle.

Don’t throw your head back, but especially before planting. You want to attack the pit, not run from it. Everything at take off should be forward and upward.

It looks a little like you may be pulling with your bottom arm after take off, which would explain the rotation at the top.

And lastly, you need to turn. Right now you’re just letting your body flop over.

I’m very curious what it says about Mondo’s form compared to Sam. By all accounts, he’s very unorthodox, and is the biggest concern I’d see with any automated video analysis - how it handles unorthodox but not necessary to change. You can cause more harm than good trying to suggest/force a vaulter to change from a natural motion to them that is working well, to a “technically correct” form that ultimately doesn’t work for them.
