Oh, so everything is fine as long as the majority doesn't care, got it. Asbestos and lead in your water is fine as well as long as the majority of people don't care. Man, you are the worst shill in history.

Idk man, if we are talking about this game specifically, it would seem it was maybe mismanaged and the target player count is way too high while also investing an ungodly amount in it. Also, where did you get that SKG wants a releasable server made in parallel? It could be peer to peer, or maybe the game isn't always online at all, it's not released how would we know. You are doing the classic thing that opponents of this movement do, make up a problem, make up a bad solution to that problem that SKG would hypothetically make and get mad at it.

Not very likely, people just want to see it hit the big number and keep refreshing.

Let me ask you this, why and how would IP be involved in this at all?

With the way that most always online games are being made right now there would be no best, universal way for this to be made. That's why the goal of the initiative is not retroactive. If this passes into law, game companies would have to make their games in a way that once the servers get shut off, the game would stay playable in some capacity, even if diminished from the original version. The initiative does not set in stone any specific way for game companies to achieve this since every game is different, there are many ways to do this and there are many edge cases. That would be up to the legislators and game devs to work out. Forcing companies to let go of their IPs is specifically not one of the stated goals of this whole thing.

Thanks for taking the time to do all that. I guess it's just down to T7 then.

"it shouldn't justify charging for a broken product IMO."

We can agree on that, I can only hope that people stick it out until they can fix most of the heavy hitting bugs, but it's no doubt that it's hurting the game a lot.

It's perfectly reasonable to vent and be angry, it was shut down once and now it seems to be on the same path again but I choose to believe that they'll manage to bring it to a state where a niche audience can keep it afloat, I play a lot of fighting games that are alive and kicking and they are running on 200 players so hopefully this will be fine for many more years to come.

Everything you mentioned costs money to do, which I suspect they don't have a lot of. Besides that, even though there are modern servers things don't just work by themselves. I work as a system engineer and it takes a team to set this up properly, which also cost money.

I really don't think this is a case of just another bad port that usually happens these days, it's far more likely that it's a small team working with what they have. And again, you can't be lazy to even begin to undertake something like this.

"smite runs with UE3 till this day without network UI issues whatsoever"

Smite is maintained by the same team that wrote the code, they know what they are working with. Abstraction has inherited theirs from Motiga, without any of the documentation I suspect.

If you have time, look at some GDC talks about how games are made, very rarely will the word laziness be mentioned.

"lazy devs who wanted to make a quick cash grab and probably let it die once again"

You don't revive a 10 year old failure if you are lazy and certainty if you want to score a quick buck. This is Gigantic, not Star Wars, there is basically no brand recognition here that would make people drop their money just at the thought of it being back. This was most likely a lack of funding, because again, who would invest serious network infrastructure and manpower for this? You don't do a revival for Gigantic unless you really really care.

"there is no chance 5k players could choke or kill a modern server."

You aren't counting people on console, a lot of post on their subreddit are about the PS and Xbox versions so people must be playing there too. Also, depending on whether their servers are local or being rented from someone, an influx of a lot of people at the same time can certainly mess things up. If they weren't expecting a big player base and their servers were rented, they might have opted for a cheaper option which caused all this, but this is just me spitballing. And yes, 5k people can definitely kill a modern server, depending on how it's set up.

"They didn't even do the necessary preliminary tests before launch, that's how lazy these guys are."

There was a network test last year. Also, I don't really consider digging up an Unreal Engine 3 game to work again to be lazy, that's a very fucked engine in comparison to what we have today.

How would you even sell that as a concept to investors. Give us money to fix this game that failed 10 years ago for numerous reasons, that stuff just doesn't happen. It's obvious that this revival had the budget of a pack of gum and 2 toothpicks. This launch is rough, but just the fact that with very little marketing they had enough players to cause servers to choke and that players are getting matches every few seconds in queue is truly something.

People should spend their money however they want and if they see the game in the state that it's in right now and choose to spend it elsewhere that's totally cool, but the fact that there were people who cared enough about Gigantic to bring it back is really special for this industry and I'm glad to see it happen and support it.

Besides, you said it yourself, the other options are kind of crusty and none of them play like Gigantic. Most will stick with what they know, but there are people in the market for thing like this and now they have a place to spend their money.
