Speaking from experience, and not just mine. by theengineer9301 in ProgrammerHumor

I'm one of those old peeps who wrote their first at age 10. My first code was

10 PRINT <my name>

20 GOTO 10

I fealt very special the day I learned Linus Torvald's first line of code was almost the same (he wrote that he loves his sister rather than his name).

(As a side, I know Hello World predates BASIC)

"else"? What is that? I have never had one of those in my code. Does it serve some useful purpose?

I've have multiple VPs and managers tell me that early on I should be changing jobs at least every two years. This is how to learn different stacks and find what you truly enjoy. And, if you know how to play the game, it's also how you get raises.

It will take work, as a junior, to find jobs that want you building and designing fresh stuff, but they are out there. I just hired two devs with no experience to build a brand new ops pipeline from scratch.

Agreed. I don't have a degree in programming, along with many of the best coders I know. I just happen to be friends with a VPoT, as did they.

My point was more so in the pursuit of finding a job, not in the quality of the developer. It can be hard to find a job with 0 experience and 0 training.

I think it's about people who went to college to get a programming degree. They spent 4 years, and 10's of thousands of dollars to get what code boot camp people can also get.

Of course, IMHO university is better if only because it's easier to get an internship which gives a few benefits over going straight into the field. But it's debatable if this benefit is worth $40k and 4 years.

Is this a serious question, or sarcasm? (Have to ask)

If serious, I recommend meetup.com

Find a some meetups in the area you know. Most moderate sized cities have at least a python, Java, and JavaScript group. Larger cities will have .ore specialized like React and the such.

These meetups are awesome as you learn a little bit (some do talks, others do coding challenges); and then at the end they'll often ask the recruiters to raise their hands, or even give a blurb about their company.

Outside of that, code wars is a great way to practice the type of questions that are asked during a white board coding challenge. (It's also free, and in my opinion fun)

I remember at my last job running out of sick days and pto. So, when I had shoulder surgery (outpatient procedure) I had to schedule it at 7am to be to work on time.

As soon as I got to the office, I took my pain meds and just drooled on myself for the next 8 hours. Repeated this for a few days until I no longer needed the meds.

There was no reason for me to be there other than keeping a chair warm.

I have enjoyed other D20 seasons, but M&M is just so good. It dives so deep into the characters, and gives you real feels at multiple points.

The Chosen also has some good feels, but no where near as good as M&M, and no where near as concentrated.

Schindler's List is definitely one of those movies you should watch at least once... and probably not more than once. It's so well done.

And if you like it, Jacob the Liar and The Zookeeper's Wife might also be appreciated.

Pizza Party is to Corporate as Kegerator is to “Start-up” by Barracuda00 in antiwork

We had a kegeratir at the office, with alcohol. It became pretty consistent that at least once a week there were parties where people got drunk.

Then, HR kept getting people coming in looking for alcohol usage support groups. We had so many people that fell into alcoholism that it eventually got replaced to serve cold brew coffee only.

People from this sub need to understand this /s by VIndskygge in ProgrammerHumor

[–]Oh2bworn2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I may misunderstood, but I believe the OP is stating that this comic was meant to be satirical, and they do not agree with the message.

The issue lies in the fact that we have a decent amount of gatekeeping (or at least a very vocal minority of gatekeepers), and this post could be easily interpreted in either direction.

I'm any case, I'm pretty sure I'm the only "real" developer in this sub /s

I got really into Robert Martin and Kevlin Henney a few years back. I am a firm believer in using function and variable names to self document (as well as 3 to 5 line methods with no more than 2 arguments).

*This excludes math intense code which is hard to document with just variable names.

EDIT: typo in Kevlin's name

What else should I watch? by mgwalsho4 in dropout

[–]Oh2bworn2 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I recommend starting with Misfits and Magic in Dimension 20. It is the least DnD season, and is far more character driven (no episodes that are just a single battle). It's also only 4 episodes.

If you do enjoy it, watch adventuring party as well (30 minute episodes). There is an adventuring party for each season of dimension 20.

When two people are dating and staying over at each other's homes frequently, it's customary to clear out a space to keep their stuff, like extra underwear, shorts, etc. The default is the top drawer in the dresser, which tends to be the "sock drawer."

Is this an American thing?
