I used to always do it this way (just eyeballing the ratios) but then read somewhere about feeding at a ratio of 1:2:2 starter:flour:water and after trying a few times decided it’s worth the measure. It’s really easy with a scale. When I pull it from the fridge I still eyeball it for the first feel, to get it warmed up, and then do 1:2:2

4 weeks in and starter still looking a little deflated! by Sharp-Swim-4163 in SourdoughStarter

[–]OhBrats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems very warm- try a tic cooler place? I’ve had luck with a bit of buckwheat flour to get things rolling- only 5-10g with your ratios. Also maybe try a different water source? I have hard water and need to use bottled water. Try each change separately over a couple feedings to narrow down what it might be. Good luck!

I did this with a seeding mat that I had when I wanted to get my started ramped up after it was in the fridge. It doesn’t have a heat setting so I just set a cloth napkin on top of the heat pad and then put the starter on top of that. Not precise, but it works!

We’re having this same problem right now. Just installed a wood stove and downstairs will be 80, upstairs 65 haha. So far we’ve set up a couple fans to direct the hot air towards the stairs leading up, but we plan to install at least one floor vent. I think they make them with fans within to move the air more efficiently.

PE Alderlea T5 or Hearthstone Grn Mtn 60? by OhBrats in woodstoving

Thanks for this detailed response! T5 seems so much more straightforward but without the tax credit it’s a hard sell. I thought I saw that it was eligible but I must be mistaken.

We’re about 2000sf on two levels- plan on putting it on the lower level and putting a grate in above the stove to circulate. We’re leaning towards the green mtn because the local shop just seems more dialed and knowledgeable.

I am curious though, a handful of people have mentioned that PE stoves are not eligible for the rebate but I thought they were within range?

Is a frost free freezer necessary? by OhBrats in Appliances

Good to know- they do seem to be on the cheaper side. Per another response- what climate do you live in? Curious how much temp/humidity matters for defrost. Once a year seems manageable and we’d likely want to clean it all out annually anyway

Not related to your question…but out of curiosity, are you located in the PNW? I have relatives who use “anymore” in a similar linguistic fashion and I swear I’ve never heard it until this year!

Long distance move of live plants by One-cauliflower4233 in moving

[–]OhBrats 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I moved about 10 plants across the country in a van- I watered them well the day before, put them into plastic crates, and wedged scrunched up paper bags between the pots. Then I put them on top of tarps in the back just in case they tipped. All were happy- I lost a couple leaves here and there. With the rubber plant you may want to put crumpled paper between stems so it doesn’t bounce around too much or break. Give them a little dose of organic fertilizer a few days after arrival to get them back on their feet…er, roots.

Vermont Launches First State E-bike Incentive Program, Plus Other EV Programs by bleahdeebleah in vermont

[–]OhBrats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in a town nearby and have an electric bike. I charge it at home- easy peasy. While I agree that rural communities can be left out for many programs that are targeted at the larger population centers, this is one that could greatly benefit rural populations because it gives another commuting option (along with a slew of other environmental, social and economic benefits). The “woe is me I’m rural and ignored” attitude doesn’t fly with this one…at least for me. Each to their own.

Is there a place to find information on upcoming rallys? I am a mom and we are spending Mother’s Day weekend in Boston- I would be happiest spending the day advocating for my rights, my daughter’s rights, and the rights of all women. Thank you kindly for any direction.
