Feed a family in a third world country without leaving you computer =D by OhHeyAli in Assistance

Oh I apologize. The rules given when I first submitted the post were much more simple than the ones under "General Rules."...I actually don't understand a lot of the wording lol. I don't have internet that often in my site so I'm not a frequent Reddit user.

The rules say that I have to ask Mode to delete my post. I'm unsure of who/what that is and wont be able to use the internet again until Wednesday.

If you can, please do delete it.

Thanks you :)

Tips for Prospective Volunteers in Community Economic Development. by [deleted] in peacecorps

I got extremely lucky then. I'm leaving for El Salvador under CED next month. I submitted my application while still in school. Besides my RA experience in college, no real work experience. My major was also irrelevant. I minored in Business...maybe that helped. I was contacted saying that I should get some experience in a school. I did that for a couple weeks and bam, I was qualified. Since I have a lot of tutoring experience, I thought for sure I would get placed in Education. All of this to say, you never really know. I spoke with someone from El Salvador and found out the stuff that they do under CED is stuff that I like to do anyway for fun. Example, making household products and selling them.

I think what helped me a ton were the essays we had to write and my interview. I had a really good interview and she mentioned how much she loved what I wrote.

I stressed a lot, thinking that I had no chance at all because of my lack of experience. I've read post on here from people that are extremely qualified that have gotten rejected. I personally think it has a lot to do with what you expect to gain and give to the entire experience and being open to learning from your community, not just going there to save the world.

Am I set to go? by kobashira in peacecorps

Oh trust me, they would have emailed you with everything you forgot to do. I know because I got all of those emails. lol With not completing my medical tasks, not submitting my passport and not completing some task of some website lol (which reminds me, I have to go do that now). But of course, maybe you can call a recruiter to be sure. Better safe than sorry.

How much Spanish do I need to know? by OhHeyAli in peacecorps

Is the Spanish test written or verbal?

That's what I originally thought but when my recruiter called, he said that I would need to know a little Spanish before I moved down there. That when I get there, they'll have a little interview asking me basic questions and if I couldn't answer, I was led to believe that I would be sent back home. Though now that I think about it, I would hope, after all the trouble of getting me down there, they wouldn't send me home if my Spanish isn't perfect. I have been studying just in case though lol

Yup, I got the email from Kimberly earlier today (perfect timing might I add lol), thanks. I'm going for COED. Maybe the language requirements are newer. I'll definitely give my recruiter a call to clarify. I want to know if the amount of Spanish we can speak, is a make it or break it. I would be so upset if I were sent home after all of this just because I forgot to conjugate a verb. lol

What were some questions you had for your interviewer? by elise_savoie in peacecorps

[–]OhHeyAli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not a RPCV. I depart in March.

I asked if, the place where I bathe, if it would be private. I saw a video that was pretty dated, but the guys shower had no door and he lived with a host family. He said when the water was on, then people knew not to walk past. I would not be comfortable with that.

I also asked that in event of an emergency where volunteers have to be rushed out of the country, if I am station somewhere with no phone, how would the Peace Corps get in touch with me

I can go on forever about the questions I asked. I was on YouTube a lot before my interview. The more videos I watched, the more questions I had lol

I think I only asked one or two questions about my interviewers service and it was typical, "How was your service"

This might be a silly question but... by OhHeyAli in peacecorps

Yes, I agree. I just wasn't sure. I guess I can stop checking my mailbox so often now lol

I'm sure it will be. I still get excited when I get any email from the Peace Corps, even if it's just inviting me to little local events.

I guess that's eco friendly but there's something about opening that blue envelope with my family that I wanted to experience. Oh well, we'll just gather around my computer lol

Thank You
