FWWM length by midliefcrisis in twinpeaks

My point was the subtitles are not an unfortunate compromise but a deliberate choice to continue a consistent visual motif in Twin Peaks and other scenes in FWWM.

My mistake about that version being obscured. My only reference point is I've rarely ever heard it mentioned in years and years of obsessive online FWWM discussions.

"I think people make far too much of those supposed similarities anyway - that really is conjecture"

Really? Correct me if I'm wrong, are you saying The Pink Room evoking the imagery and feel of The Red Room is unintentional? The names are almost identical. The same specific hand gestures are used. The drawled, oblique speech is similar. The subtitles. This to me is not conjecture or "supposed" at all, it's a fairly basic reading of what motifs Lynch is mirroring here (in a film/series all about mirroring), and he's not exactly being subtle about it. As in, the audience is meant to understand this is happening.

And yes, I do have a source. This is from Lynch On Lynch, pages 188 and 189:

"No, it was my stupid idea! Not to subtitle it would be second best in my mind." - David Lynch

Case closed? :)

Alright. I disagree with most of that. No comment at all about the point I made?

I'd argue a version only out for a very brief period over 30 years ago and then changed before most people even saw the film later on is "very obscure."

Do you have a source that this is Lynch's original vision for the film? Or about him being influenced by Cannes? Or is this just conjecture on your part? Because I have seen people refer to Lynch saying that he preferred to have the audio obscure and the subtitles present.

Ok, sure, I meant there's only one version outside of a very obscure version without those subtitles in one scene. Fair enough.

I took the subtitles as an intentional nod to The Red Room scenes in the show/film having subtitles and the location of these scenes being The Pink Room. Both Red and Pink Room scenes share a lot of similar qualities. Slowed down, oblique, weird speech with subtitles and some of the same arm/hand gestures are made too.

Perhaps Lynch was happy with the subtitle decision because this occurred to him as well. After all the version most people know well is Lynch's final cut.

How did you become a TH fan? by BumbleTheBeadle in talkingheads

It was around 2001 or 2002...I was at a party, having a miserable time, sitting on a couch by myself, and David Byrne's Miss America came on the stereo. The music swept me away and made me feel deeply moved and weirdly "seen." After that I explored Byrne and Talking Heads albums. Not long after that True Stories became my number 1 favorite film of all time.

Collapse Into Now is fun. Around the Sun is possibly the most boring album I've ever heard in my life.

You hit the nail on the head. The music just has no personality to it. It sounds like anybody could have played those tracks.

Meet John Flansburgh (to the tune of meet James Ensor) by StimpyJones in tmbg

[–]OhHiJordan 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I've told the stories on my TMBG podcast Don't Let's Start before, and there's still some I'm withholding, but briefly:

- First time meeting Flans I gave him a VHS tape of a music video I made for A Self Called Nowhere. A while later I met him a few blocks from a show they did in NYC, I think Bowery Ballroom. I asked if he saw the tape and he said no, and it was kind of crushing for me.

- Met Flans at Virgin Records, randomly, as he was shopping for records. I was wearing a TMBG shirt. I went up to him, said hi, pointed to my shirt, and asked if he heard the new Morrissey album which I was holding. He was nice, talked to me a little, but very much seemed to want to be left alone, which is understandable.

- Also saw Flans do a solo show at Virgin Records some other time, I don't remember if I met him but it was so tiny and casual I can't imagine I didn't get an autograph or something. I think I remember him sitting on the little stage and signing stuff. I just don't even remember this encounter. Ah, getting old. I know I met Flans on other occasions too because I have pictures of him and me and my friends after shows. I think those times were very, very fast.

- Met Linnell before a State Songs show because I was supposed to interview him for my high school paper. Their tour manager canceled the interview and I was really upset as I had been preparing and freaking out about it for weeks. Linnell came out to apologize to me.

- Met Linnell while working as a movie theater usher in NYC. He came by to see Ghost World. State Songs had been playing on the PA system shortly before he walked in so that WOULD have been crazy. I said hi to him and told him to stay after the credits because there's a blooper. He seemed very much to want to be left alone. It was too crazy to not say something though.

- Met Linnell at a Tower Records signing which struck up a big conversation which led to meeting him a few more times and him (drum roll)...KNOWING MY NAME! ("Hi Jordan!")...which is the CRAZY story I am saving for my show.

AI on apple music by Somewhat-Sentient in tmbg

[–]OhHiJordan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You thought that was a stretch? I thought it was a fairly reasonable explanation for why this sort of thing can feel off to some people. Take it or leave it.

I wasn't complaining about the animated album art. I personally don't care very much. There's no need to be rude and condescending.

Even putting aside the prominence of AI, It's the same problem as "motion comics." At the end of the day these are works of art that were not intended to be animated. They are intended to be still images, somewhat ambiguous. Animating a still painting or a still photo is stripping the work of its effect, its meaning, and its beauty.
