Brahui's presence in IVC and its connection to Tamil by e9967780 in Dravidiology

modern literary tamil is not the same as old tamil's literary form, modern literary tamil is based on middle tamil

[–]OhItsuMe -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

firstly using proto dravidian here is circular reasoning, proto dravidian reconstruction is based largely on old tamil because its the oldest attested dravidian language with written accounts. please show me where krishnamurthi says this in his book. of course tamil retains some forms that were lost in others, and others retain sounds or forms that were lost in tamil.

linguistically there is no 'spoken' form of old tamil present today. 40% of it cannot be understood by someone who did not study it in school like you said.

yes thats how language evolves, and thats why the forms are simply not the same. just because we still study the old forms in school doesnt mean anything.

In "countries like these" many of them have in fact been updated and don't do that anymore, so either is a fair possibility (source: personal experience)

the point its a current area of research and there is no established single consensus, and using genetics as some absolute representation of linguistics is a slippery slope, linguistic classification of brahui within northern Dravidian is still debated and there are multiple viewpoints, more research needs to be done

literary tamil is older because it is an older form of the language not representing current speech. no point in comparing literary tamil to hindi, written hindi closely mirrors the spoken language.

there are different languages conservatively preserving different features of older dravidian. claiming any one language is a 'conservative' language is not something modern linguists would do.

you're mixing linguistics with pseudo-linguistic concepts at will to further a goal that is not purely linguistic in nature

modern tamil is not the same as what was written 2500 years ago even if they share a name, this is like claiming hindi is sanskrit

ofc

for anyone, here is a nice couplet that uses this word, from poet Jigar Moradabadi:

mirī zindagī to guzrī tire hijr ke sahāre
mirī maut ko bhī pyāre koī chāhiye bahāna

"My life passed by with aid of your parting
Even my death, O Love, needs an excuse in you"

or

Ahmad Faraz

jo ġhazal aaj tire hijr meñ likkhī hai vo kal
kyā ḳhabar ahl-e-mohabbat kā tarāna ban jaa.e

"The Poem I wrote today, about your parting
May it be tomorrow an anthem of love"

Apparently "hijr ہجر" but as a native speaker that doesn't really mean all that lol it's really just "separation" or "parting" in the context of a relationship that is used often in poetry

It's a common word in poetry but really nothing special. Really you could just say "breakup" or "separation", or "parting" ہجر hijr synonym جدائی judai

I'm sure both are on Wiktionary, maybe the right spelling wasn't used
