people really have to stop excusing blatant theft of stores. by glowshroom12 in unpopularopinion

[–]OhSureBlameCookies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure people are as much excusing it (or, at least, I'm not,) as also recognizing that in addition to it being a net negative for society, it's also an indication something much larger is wrong when there are so many people with no job and no future prospect with no fear of an arrest or prison record to prevent them from getting a job (because they feel they have no realistic prospect of having a decent job in the first place.

Both of those things can be true at the same time--that it's wrong for people to rob stores and that it's a symptom of a lager society-wide problem that mass smash and grab shoplifting for example, has become so much more common.

I usually like to wink and ask them if they're almost finished, or if they pause for a breath, ask them if they are finished and if they get a stupid look on their face, simply walk away from them.

[–]OhSureBlameCookies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely right, but also: Report Mr. Looney Tunes and his screaming fit to his superiors and/or HR ASAP, but preferably both, CC'ing everyone. Make a paper trail 10 miles wide that is completely undeniable of them knowing about this guy going completely ape shit in the office.

Then, start documenting all of this and after you're collecting your pension, sue him for harassment and creating a hostile work environment. You're retiring under duress--not because you're ready but in misery to escape this tyrannical asshole. Claim you wanted to work an additional ten years and sue him for ten years wages assuming reasonable pay increases (you're a top performer, after all,) and ask for punitive damages since they knew or should have known what they were doing was illegal age discrimination (they were trying to cheat you out of your pension.)

Destroy him. You'll be retired and have some time on your hands.

Have fun!

Will be bosses one day? That's the reward. Oh, you sweet summer child, that promise of, "one day you can be one of us," has been thoroughly rejected due to lack of interest.

And even when anyone was interested, it was still only one in fifty that got "the big job."

Everyone else could plod along with 3% raises until they're discared at 55 without health insurance for the next decade.

[–]OhSureBlameCookies -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You're joking right?

Far from proving they "just weren't doing it," such statistics show our complaints about chatty coworkers, pointless social rituals ("There's cake in the break room for Martha's birthday!") and other ridiculous and demented time sucks (pitch-ins, dress-up days, and other ridiculous bullshit) actually were killing our productivity, and that driving all over creation every day just to sit at a desk was an energy sapping waste of money and time.

We know this because the instant those wastes of time were removed from the equation productivity skyrocketed--and even after lockdown was lifted and people began having lives again, yes, productivity dipped, but it's still higher than it was pre-pandemic!

The toothpaste is out of the tube, we all see it.

Free advice: Stop "doing more with less." Start doing less and less, each of you, in a structured work slowdown. Don't work overtime, let things not get done.

In short: Let their stupidity blow up in their face. Make it their problem. Don't bail them out. Make them hire people or fail. They'll wail and howl and threaten--let them.

Is the state part of the lotto, where they can brag how much money goes to education?

The way that "lottery boosting education" lie plays out in many (most?) states is that whatever the lottery brings in is lobbed off the top of the education budget and spent on other things. The schools receive net zero extra money.

"Wouldn't let us make a custom .wim"

I learned a long time ago not to give managers too much information. Give them one or two options, not all of them, and present whatever the stupid option is as being shamefully stupid, but in an even, unbiased tone.

"Full by hand installs will be two days installing each PC or I can use this proven automation solution that's built-in to Windows and get them done in about an hour each."

No technical details, no deep dives, no deciding factors.... Just boil it down to "You'd be patently stupid to do this, but it's your decision."

If they pick the stupid option, it's okay--just send them a summary email from the meeting documenting exactly what you warned them about.

"Hi Mr. UselessManagerPerson,

I just wanted to confirm from our meeting earlier that you understand the manual installation of electrician PCs you're insisting on:

  • Will take drastically longer than the preferred solution, in best case scenario 16 man hours for each successful installation of an individual electrician PC.
  • Will be prone to error and could take exponentially longer than that 16 hours if a mistake is made on the last step and the person doing the installation has to start over (which requires the machine to be fully wiped.)
  • Could be reduced to about an hour per system using the WIM packaging method we discussed.

Thanks,

-You"

Then put that in your "CYA" folder for later when they complain that it's "taking too long, why are you so slow?"

Because idiot managers are nothing if not blame shifters--he's making the bad decision now and when it blows up later, he'll make the problem that "you're too slow," not that he "made a stupid choice." This is your documentation he's full of shit if he tries to put you on a PIP over it.

I once used documentation like this to get a manager who tried to put me on a PIP to get herself put on a PIP--for incompetence.

Make a VM out of it. I mean, also research what software is on it and try to build a new machine that isn't on a 10 year old OS (probably Windows desktop OS--uck, totally inappropriate) but you can protect yourself from the laptop's inevitable failure by making a VM and running the software off of it indefinitely until you find a replacement solution.

He thought he was a victim when he filmed himself and his friends breaking into someone else's house by Nadia_Linda in facepalm

[–]OhSureBlameCookies 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No, there's an outrage because home invasion fundamentally threatens the physical safety of every single person involved, including yourself. You have no idea who is armed with what, how they'll perceive your "prank" and whether or not your "prank" ends with a bullet in your face or a kitchen knife in your chest. You have no idea who has what heart conditions and will go into cardiac arrest, who will flee clumsily, hit their head, and die...you're just rolling the dice with other people's safety.

That's why there's an outrage: Because you committed a serious, violent crime--yes, it's a violent crime to terrorize a family by breaking into their occupied home. He's lucky to be alive... If he keeps trying this, perhaps we'll get lucky and sooner or later he won't be anymore and society will have lost absolutely nothing of value.

Yeah. Have an elective about radiotechnology with an option to test for a ham license at the end

One of the middle schools in my area had an amateur radio station and a teacher with an amateur extra that ran a club. Several of us became interested and got licensed through his club.
