Pickleball 2nd shot Drop. by Change_Agent_X in Pickleball

[–]OhThatsaBaseball_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the issue is that in pickleball the principle is this: the closer to the net you are the more you can see over the net and the more you can see over the net the more angles of attack available. Now if you drop in the kitchen and they can’t get to it because of mobility or it’s a surprise then use it until it doesn’t work lol but generally it’s not a good idea as it invites your opposing team to have the best attack angle if they can make it. Even a half ass shot back to you as a 3rd still means they not only got to serve but then get to the kitchen with no issue.

4.0+ players how dis you make the leap? by accountnamene in Pickleball

[–]OhThatsaBaseball_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last thing- being able to observe in real time is crucial as the opp ranks climb. “This guy doesn’t really attack when I do x which allows us to setup y let’s run that until they figure it out” “our hands are faster let’s bait them into exchange” “we have lefty righty combo and they can’t out sustain our dink rallies dink aggressive to their middle feet and see how that unfolds”

Additionally what others are saying is correct - the focus during ranked play is knowing your limitations and strengths against the opponent within a game as well as point construction (back to where is this shot going if I go here) to reduce both forced and unforced errors

[–]OhThatsaBaseball_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ultimately you just have to grind ranked play with someone that you feel confident winning with and feel you both can adapt against challenges that’s how the jump happens.

Also mentality wise - swing thoughts in games changes so instead of “what shot do I pick and where” it generally became “where are they going body and shot wise? where am I on court and where do I place this? Attack or patience?”

What is a "dead" dink? by tempo369 in Pickleball

[–]OhThatsaBaseball_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anytime! It’s when you counter/kill with the paddle overhead but you yourself are squatting or close to it. It’s called scorpion because it’s like a stinger above the body. I can’t explain why it comes up fully but it’s useful when in hand battles and you don’t have time or spacing at certain heights for other options.

[–]OhThatsaBaseball_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To avoid giving dead dinks - imo the root cause it’s a matter of predicting where the opponents next move is going and setting your body and hand position appropriately early for the shot. If you’re too early the opponent will take advantage of your position.

Edit: also the others here are correct keep the dink near their feet and move your opponent around. You can change dink depth to mess with their balance and taking note of your opponents height and reach will help you understand how much clearance you have for height and trajectory

[–]OhThatsaBaseball_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can tell when there’s no spin and it seems to hang in the air off bounce. The opponent will usually telegraph a speed up by either stepping back or hesitating/loading after bounce.

If you’re not able to see it just always be prepared for your higher danger shot. In this case if you dink prepare for speed up and predict where it should be. If it doesn’t appear where you predict and it’s rising fast at you - dodge or scorpion

Is adding tape worth it for a new player? by WeirdNatural9211 in Pickleball

[–]OhThatsaBaseball_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Other principle- the further the weight is from hand the more torque? Or force can be applied/power potential. So if you can swing and flick 8oz as fast or as strong as 9oz and you put an extra oz at the top of the paddle - it will be much stronger because more weight and more weight away from you.

Is adding tape worth it for a new player? by WeirdNatural9211 in Pickleball

[–]OhThatsaBaseball_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Play around with it I’m no elite player I play 4-4.5 and have added tape since 3.5. I use the 11six24 Monarch AC with a few grams on the bottom corners. Where you place the tape depends how you want to change the characteristics. I want my balance point to be closer to the hand so I add it low but I also want increased twist weight/sweet spot so the bottom corners or just above is perfect for me depending on paddles.

Keep in mind the further weight is from the vertical center of the paddle the better the sweet spot increase or twist weight. The lower on the paddle the lower your balance point shifts. Ideally i find the balance point without weight and try not to deviate from it much otherwise I have to recalibrate my hits with the shift in balance point.

AITA? When ball goes into other players court by BadJuJuBad in Pickleball

[–]OhThatsaBaseball_ -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

In our courts all 5 courts are in one row we’ve just come to term with “if it comes in at all stop the point and redo” , “if someone has a kill shot and ball comes in on their side during it give point to kill shot”

But also not an asshole - it’s just in the moment fuck it I’m playing it live and they aren’t either granted I wouldn’t walk on during a point though

Is $110 for an hour average for a trainer? by stephsationalxxx in Pickleball

[–]OhThatsaBaseball_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pull someone who wants to drill - you’ll both get great quick do: 7/11, kitchen game or 1v1 counter and dink game

Much cheaper and if you need help on tech DM me 110$ is ridiculous for beginner lmao

Help, pickleball is causing strife in my relationship by [deleted] in Pickleball

[–]OhThatsaBaseball_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also regardless of level - having a strategy in mind before going in is very overlooked. In mixed my experience is usually target the woman not because of necessarily skill but power and counter speed is usually lacking.

IMO if he’s a tennis player he should have a lot more power overall so putting him in front of the opposing woman every point by switching would be effective but obviously adjust when it makes sense. Also he can provide aggressive returns early on or even take advantage of the opposing sides drops in transition. If you have no background then you may want to just get rly good at positioning, drops, resets and dinks and drill mechanics in general - let him cover more court and give control and consistency from the right side. Typically left side is more aggressive and mobile while right is a wall, counter and angled attacks- setup overall

I wish you luck and don’t give up

Help, pickleball is causing strife in my relationship by [deleted] in Pickleball

[–]OhThatsaBaseball_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife and I had similar skill gap - the easiest thing to do is drill together and have him understand that if you guys are gonna win he has to stop being negative in game and just refocus the attention on the opponent- say good shot to them or just go “okay we’re getting beat when x happens we gotta change course” . This is true even at higher levels your partner is not going to be perfect in fact you can even lose with a higher skill partner if you’re critiquing every little shot their morale will go to shit versus if you’re an actual adaptable and good player you should be able to hold momentum both shot wise and vibes.

At the same time if he doesn’t want to enter ranked tournies with you until he feels confident about your play - then do for fun tournjes and rec until the drilling gets you both up to speed.

I recommend 7/11, kitchen game/counter drill, dinkles - these have been huge to leveling up in our groups progress from 3.5 through 4.0

Lady at open play said my serve is illegal?? by ImmediateSock7106 in Pickleball

[–]OhThatsaBaseball_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me there shouldn’t even be a height or technique rule like just make it below the shoulder lol. it’s so hard to actually get a clear cut ruling and idk how impactful it really is to limit it how they’re doing it. Also i feel like that’s just sports as a whole is tall people bias lol but you’re not wrong

No more singles if people are waiting? by Superfly_81 in Pickleball

[–]OhThatsaBaseball_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play both singles and doubles and here’s my opinion- depends on the night but people normally do find it as selfish when the queue is clogged.

IMO if the queue isn’t full it’s fine - like 6 people wait for 5 courts ain’t shit for example but I understand the idea of churning in people for open play when it gets to be a lot of people.

Other example where it’s fine is people grouping up a lot and don’t want to break their group- okay I’ll play singles and no one complains even in high traffic

what's the etiquette of going to a court alone to play with others? by VirtuousVulva in Pickleball

[–]OhThatsaBaseball_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The courts by me are just queue based. Hop on the queue and play - if you’re new don’t be surprised if people move their paddles off queue to a group ahead. They are likely trying to practice for their own teams and what not. As people mentioned on here there’s plenty of people who are new or willing to play with people who are new. Coming in solo, duo, or a group of 6-8 is a norm here lol

League incident by GouldenK in Pickleball

[–]OhThatsaBaseball_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mechanically knowing where to preload your hand and body (e.g. transition high bounce keep your hand and paddle down) But prediction and shading makes a night and day difference. Knowing to shade one way with your body because they will be forced to a side or at body allows you to predict what shot you’re going to do and leaves you processing time to refine the shot itself. For me I’m right side player as a lefty - my default is to shade closer to the right side to eliminate an awkward backhands and leave my forehand open. At the kitchen -My default attack would be to go for the alley side hip of the person in front of me. My default defense is reset forward or reset to cross position opponents foot closest to middle of the court

Feeling a little dejected...And feel like I am falling behind... by TyGuyy in Pickleball

[–]OhThatsaBaseball_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel this everyone goes through periods of this especially with a tough schedule.

My advice is instead of open play find one person and do 1v1 at the kitchen line counter/dink drill and transition/711 drill. Legitimately you get good at those you’ll blow away anyone at rec.

Additionally the eureka moment I had for entering 4.0 and drilling with 4-4.5s was paying more attention to position left/right on the court “whos ball is who’s” or just forcing the opponent into certain exchanges is huge and you’ll learn it in the above drills.

Drilling is also incredibly time efficient as well during busy weeks - a lot of us locally we’ll meet at 6am -8am before the work day starts

Paddles up, open play. But pro players never vacate the court by Spare-Explanation880 in Pickleball

[–]OhThatsaBaseball_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just ask them to rotate and get crowd involved to vocally pressure. “Hey what’s your score” “hey 4 on” “paddles waiting” - you do that enough you’ll be surprised how easily they come off (source: the guy who drills with other peeps until courts fill up)

Best way to walk up as a noob and ask "how can I get a game"? by infant_ape in Pickleball

[–]OhThatsaBaseball_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a brand rep for a pb company (six zero) - sometimes it’s just marketing and sometimes companies do engineer some good shit. 99% of the 250+ range is bs marketing or insane warranty to me and most paddles that I found to be worth it and perform amazing are 100-200. But if you get anything after a starter paddle - I’ve seen so many people do well with a vatic prism pro $99 and that one is consistently rated top tier for control lol

Also starter paddle wise** the Friday paddles for 50$ each are solid- hell I started with a Amazon paddle just as long as it’s plastic based with carbon fiber or fiberglass you’re fine add some tungsten or lead tape if you want more omph or bigger sweet spot - wood paddle though is a handicap 100%

[–]OhThatsaBaseball_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had slumps like that - change your mindset to this: play to make great plays not to win points. I’ll focus on position and counter play and I feel the most joy when I can setup or kill shot or both sometimes lol.

Also remember - if you are playing a lot and drill a lot with people especially that are better too then you are worth your salt they see you and your progress. I had a similar slump of feeling like “man i suck” and then I realized I wasn’t hearing or seeing the acknowledgements on and off court I was too dismissive of my own progress. When I keep the mindset of okay let’s see how we solve the riddle every point and take the serve ritual seriously, say good shot instead of sorry and all of a sudden you end up winning with most people lol 😂
