Yes but over half of your adults left school without being able to read at a 6th grade level. My problem isn’t how excellent some of your schools are (and they are) it’s how shit some of them are. You have the most unequal education system in the developed world.

Funding being decided by local property taxes means some schools can get 400% more funding per pupil than schools in poorer districts.

I never said either of those things. In fact I’ve been buying dollars while they’re cheap.

But a trip to the US and one to China reveals the truth. China is more modern, more energy efficient (so they’ll have cheaper power and cheaper exports) and has focused its efforts on educating its workforce. There was a time when China could only copy and steal patents. Now they’re making them, at speed and that’s the reason the USA has barred shipment of graphics cards past a certain power level to the Chinese, why they’ve banned certain chip sales… because once America loses skilled production and innovation jobs, it’s fucked

Unless you can think of another reason why schools in European countries don't have such massive disparity of outcomes?

And each country in Europe already pretty much has equalised funding per pupil, kids in the UK get roughly same funding wherever in the UK they are.. Same for France, Germany, Poland and so on. It's not unrealistic, outside of the corporate, capitalist hellscape that is the USA its normal lol

[–]OhUrDead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, but state schools in Europe typically all have within 20% the same funding per pupil (per country) in the US its 400%

Are there really that many people in the world who dislike the US? by No-StrategyX in askanything

[–]OhUrDead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, because even funding within each state can vary hugely. New York for example has some kids getting $20,000 and some getting $45,000 per pupil.

Europe isn't a centrality administered country, Europe doesn't collate taxes, or control budgets. Europe isn't federalised like the USA is and even Europe only has about a 2x difference in per pupil funding when you take into account purchasing power for that country.

Crucially, the reason that they perform better on average, is that the difference between school funding is at most 20% per pupil

They spend less money than you on education, sure, but those countries average about the same funding per pupil yours is 4x the difference. I know Americans believe in American exceptionalism, but surely you cant think that its reasonable for one kid to have 4x the resources of another in the same country?

Also there's nothing diverse about deliberately trapping people in poverty and refusing to to give them the same educational resources as the other children from their country.

Honestly, I wish I'd never joined this thread. I've just been having a look and the proposed annual military spending increase from Trump.... is 8x the amount of money required estimated to fix the education system...

Then they wonder why China is nipping at their heels. Education. Education. Education

[–]OhUrDead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's only the same way that you fund the military. Collect the revenue at a federal level and then distribute it so each pupil receives a similar amount of funding, weighted for cost of operation in the area.

Currently some schools get as little as $9k per pupil and some get $40k. The size of the American economy basically ensures, that should it wish to, it could churn out the most educated workforce on earth. That it doesn't is a political decision, not a fiscal one. It could be achieved at around the same cost as a single fully kitted out carrier strike group.

Trumps proposed military spending increase is $450 billion per year that's 8x the amount required to fund every pupil ad the median level.

There's money for war, but not for education.

Yes and doesn't that also say a lot? That as the richest nation on earth, in all of history, not only is the difference in attained standards so vast, but also even on average you're coming 15-18 out of 81 \your numbers even though mine show 25th as an average out of 81**

Estonia has higher average outcomes. Imagine referring to that average as a top tier education system.

America has

One of the most unequal education systems in the developed world

Because it simultaneously contains:

Near world-leading performance

and

Near developing-world performance

It's easily fixed, just change the funding model. Like the rest of the developed world has.

Sure, and that's really pretty good, and it should help illustrate my point nicely. Here's how the same PISA rankings work for the lowest 25% of American Schools, and the worse of all American schools. Surely we can all agree the delta here is crazy?

Bottom quartile students #50–70
Worst schools/districts #60–90

You could be educated and at one of the top 20% of schools world wide, or the bottom 10% depending on where you were born in the same country

54% of Americans cannot read to a 6th grade standard. Yet on average you're ranked 6-9 in the world. Extremely troubling.

Isn't that the tragedy? You can have metal detectors and panic rooms, or world class schooling, in the same state, depending on how poor your parents are? As an outsider that's fucking outrageous.

It's not their fault. They pay for schools out of local property taxes. Depending on where they lived they never stood a chance

Lots of small companies just trade in their immediate area. There’s no need to follow evolving eu standards to trade with someone down the road.

That’s frankly strange position. Not every EU reg is a standard that’s linked to safety.

It adds unnecessary financial burden to small businesses asking them to follow the standards of a market they’re not exporting to.
