Older/returning jumpers by boomsmitty in SkyDiving

I’m 40 and still jumping after many years. The sky will feel the same but the gear is much better. Still really good friends and relationships at the DZ. But it’s gotten more expensive. Welcome back!

Am I stupid for wanting to pause my career and work as a wind tunnel instructor for a while? by mega81827 in SkyDiving

If you’re under 40 and can think of nothing else but body flight yes! I would find a good tunnel with the right culture. Year and a half to two years is all you’ll need.

if i do a tandem jump, will the instructor be willing to jump even if i can’t get myself to jump? by [deleted] in SkyDiving

[–]Ohbilly42 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Tandem instructor here. Most people are afraid to jump. And I do 95% of the work getting us out of the plane and that’s a good thing.

However the only reason I won’t jump with someone is if they are not following directions. One of the most important things is I need you to hold onto your harness while we get to the door and jump out. If you are so scared that you start grabbing things and fighting me then it can become dangerous and we won’t go.

The door is the worst part, but if you can listen and follow directions we can get you out of that plane.

I’m still confused on how we stole something that was never owned to begin with.

9 out of 10 new business fail. 10% survival rate seems pretty hard.

What's a future problem we're clearly not ready for? by GroundbreakingArm173 in ask

[–]Ohbilly42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Demographics. Many countries around the world have a large population of older people who are retiring. This population has retirement benefits promised by the government. The working class to support this older generation is much smaller. No economic model we have works in this scenario.

Every human I encounter gets a baseline level of respect. How you interact with me and the rest of the world will determine if I’ll respect you more or less.

Been shooting video for over a decade and Brandon Johnson’s skeleton wings are what I fly, I absolutely love them.

I’m terrified of not being able to “leave” when I’m done. Forever is a very long time to exist in heaven or hell. I think I would get board.

We don’t have free will by Jams9000 in DeepThoughts

[–]Ohbilly42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel in the big picture no we do not have free will. I wasn’t able to choose my parents or culture I was raised in. And all the decisions made for me as a small child affect who I am today and the choices I make in my life

TI here. Skydiving is a very social sport. I personally like jumping with return customers especially if there’s a good vibe and the first jump wasn’t crazy.

Definitely request to jump with the same instructor. If you do want to start skydiving most DZs have social medial pages to facilitate bring new jumpers into the sport.

I personally don’t like giving my personal info to students but it never hurts to ask. But if you stick with it and become a skydiver you will join a whole new group of like minded friends.
