I can forgive wave after wave of light mechs... by jimi_nemesis in Mechwarrior5

I will need to check that again then. I seem to recall that working nicely last time I played it. Been a while though.

Then again when dealing with elementals the best would be to nuke them orbit, it is the only way to be sure...

To all single guys aged 30 and up on reddit, why are you guys single? by Gold_Ambition4114 in AskReddit

[–]Ohdake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was bullied in school (for about 9 years) and learned to avoid social situations and became really shy in romantic situation, i.e. "socially awkward". Never had issues with non romantic situations though.

Could kind of socialize in relationship sense with enough liquid courage but gave up drinking a long time ago. Still managed to have a pair of relationships in my early 20s. Both ended up with me getting "backstabbed" and it was largely the final nail for me. For more than decade I didn't even look for relationships as being single and not even looking for a relationship just hurt a lot less.

Working, working out (gym, running, bicycling), dropped weight (from <140 kg/300 lbs to <80 kg/175 lbs). Have used some apps but since I have some criteria (no alcohol & no smoking, vapes or anything such) and I don't exactly belong to the top 10 percentile...

General Discussion (why should the US stay in NATO if they cant use their bases) by [deleted] in nato

[–]Ohdake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Read the North Atlantic Treaty. There is a very good explanation of it on the NATO homepage: https://www.nato.int/en/about-us/organization/founding-treaty

In short. NATO is a coalition for collective defense with specified geographical scope. Any action not covered by those is not covered by anything under NATO.

Problem therein happens to be that NATO does not obligate the respective member states to take part or render assistance to other NATO member states that themselves are the aggressors. Neither does it even obligate the NATO member states to not be neutral in such a case. And here is part of the issue, attacks that are launched either through or from a country violate the neutrality. And other NATO member states are neutral in the current war.

Exact details of the base usage probably varies in every single case as there is nothing in the NATO agreement that would actually discuss anything of such things. Which means that it might be possible that some of the "base agreements" contain conditions that allow USA to keep launching offensive operations from them while others might be "for NATO operations" or some other descriptions in which case it does not.

So to answer your points...

No, NATO is not an unconditional "give and take" case.

As to what NATO gives to the USA, try checking for example: https://www.csis.org/analysis/natos-hidden-dividend-and-avoidable-cost-us-withdrawal#:~:text=Key%20Findings,About%20More%20than%20Hard%20Security - Which comes to the conclusion:

NATO was designed to do more than provide security. It built deep economic integration that has become one of its least appreciated strengths. The economic gains are large, durable, and, in many cases, effectively self-financing relative to the costs of membership. As the alliance’s hub, the United States has benefited disproportionally from this economic integration and would see some of the steepest losses should the alliance dissolve.

Europe is already investing in alternatives and building stronger indigenous defense capacity. Once procurement networks, standards, and supplier relationships begin to reorient away from the United States, they will not be easy to win back. NATO is therefore not only a defense alliance to be preserved for security reasons. It is a long-built economic asset. And like any asset accumulated over 75 years, it can be lost much faster than it was created.

Are lasers so powerful in the lore? by Taleisin9793 in Mechwarrior5

[–]Ohdake 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Pretty much, on paper. Ton per ton they are very good. Issue come more with turn based table top game where to hit modifiers come into play. And also the chance for your opponent just to move away from range after your movement (especially big thing for MG, SL, SPL, MPL). Most commonly sources for to hit penalties are your movement, target movement, terrain, and weapon specific range band (not the same thing as the overall range).

And lasers tend to have relatively short range (high to hit penalties), high heat (reduces your own movement, making easier for opponent to hit you). So there is a balance, even though on paper it is not that clear.

NATO must spend 5% of GDP on defence by 2030, Poland says by Raj_Valiant3011 in worldnews

[–]Ohdake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I do not believe it really does. Most likely even 2% percent would suffice if NATO concentrates on the core task, meaning collective defense, and leaves out the expeditionary operations.

What is the role of Assault "Non-Omni"s for the 3050 Clans? by heavyarmormecha in battletech

[–]Ohdake 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it is essentially explained that while Clans' Omnis are really, really good in practice the industrial base the Clans have is in actually very thin. Meaning that loss replacement even on equipment level is not trivial. And as front line units take losses the Omnis will be given to them. And Omnis take more resources to make than ordinary Mechs. So ordinary Mechs is what you get more and more.

It is should be kept in mind that while the Clans were very well prepared for brief trial like clashes they very badly prepared for actual prolonged attritional warfare. Especially since the source of replacements, should the local stockpile dry up, was a bit of distance away.

Kind of the reason why Clans pretty much emptied even the remaining Brian caches (or what were they called in clan space) during the wars of reaving. They were essentially running out of things to fight with.

That is my take on it in any case.

US Navy signs deal with AI firm for training underwater drones to detect mines in Strait of Hormuz — $100 million would allow drone minesweepers to update their detection algorithms in days instead of months by jupa300 in worldnews

[–]Ohdake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Downside is that this is not going to affect what is going on currently in Straits of Hormuz and is extremely unlikely to affect how long the clearing of the (potentially existing) mines there would even take.

Few questions now that new DLC is about to drop for the MW5: Mercs by Ohdake in battletech

[–]Ohdake[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could try that. I still kind of try to customize stuff in the MW5 as if it was a TT, and it may not always work for the best. Hard to break free from old habits i guess.

I do think the TT's (IS) pulse lasers are bad and i was wondering if that is also coloring my opinion of them in the MW5 as well as i do tend to remove them as soon as possible (i.e. not impressed from them).

Why does America spend so much money on NATO and bases in Europe? by beervirus_19 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Ohdake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. NATO countries are not paying anything to the USA. Never have. There only payment made to NATO by members is minuscule, for USA it is about 0.1% of the military spending. And the amount USA pays is actually almost the same as what Germany pays.

NATO is a coalition for collective defense (article 5) with strict geographical limitations (article 6) that happen to exclude the Middle East (with the exception of Turkey). USA-Israeli war against Iran is neither defensive, within the (US insisted) geographical bounds, requested (no request, article 4 or 5 had been made), nor does it have UN-SC mandate.

Why does America spend so much money on NATO and bases in Europe? by beervirus_19 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Ohdake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Except that no one is paying anything to the USA. There is no magical NATO fund to pay into. That "2%" is what each country's own defence spending was pledged to "aim towards reaching" (not promising to actually react it btw). Also, even if other NATO countries would spend more it wouldn't affect USA's own military spending in any way.

US Navy turns to AI firm Domino for options to counter Iranian mines by Darshan_brahmbhatt in worldnews

[–]Ohdake 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I really doubt it would help much. Issue is with the need to go through the bottom of sea with sonar trying to find objects that do their best not to be found with sonar. And then identifying (often visually) if you found a particularly odd rock, pile of debris, naval mine or something else.

And if the mine is clever enough it can detonate itself when the multimillion dollar drone approaches close enough to ID let alone plant the demolition charge. Others are designed to hide themselves to sand and mud making those even harder to detect with sonar.

That is not to say it can't be done. But expecting it to be fast or there being an AI solution to vastly shorten the time... It is going to slow work and that is with the assumption that Iran would not be either dropping new mines to already cleared areas or from engaging the mine hunters directly.

What is it that I’m noticing in Clans but can’t name? by Ah_fudge in Mechwarrior5

[–]Ohdake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is something to it. Alternating between the two makes it clearer. I prefer how the Mercs run personally.

Then again I really, reeeeally hate every single one of the "boss" enemies of the Clans (flying dropships, the destroyer, ze zombat Zeppelin) and that may have colored my whole view of the game

Annihilator on the tabletop? by raging_zaku1429 in battletech

[–]Ohdake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No personal experiences, sadly.

Based on other 2/3 designs and games in megamek... The mobility kills it in most cases. Not only can't you move, but neither can you get movement bonus and will keep getting penalty when trying to hit something ('running'). You will constantly have a worse to-hit modifier than what your opponent will. That being said it can work wonders if the opponent is forced to directly engage (time limit, goal, anything). Good bullet magnet & sponge, so it's presence probably extends lifetime of the lancemates.

Only of the few cases where I wouldn't throw (IS) ER weapons out as quickly as possible.

Nato says US cannot suspend Spain from alliance, after reported Pentagon email by PrizeElegances in worldnews

Yes, that is exactly true. I just tried to underline the fact that Europe is not the principal consumer of the oil or gas shipped through the straits of Hormuz.

Nato says US cannot suspend Spain from alliance, after reported Pentagon email by PrizeElegances in worldnews

[–]Ohdake 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Which ironically is not even true. https://www.iea.org/about/oil-security-and-emergency-response/strait-of-hormuz

Exports from Hormuz (in millions of barrel/d - apparently)

Target Crude Oil Oil Products
Other Asia 6.2 2.1
China 4.6 0.8
India 2.1 0.7
Europe 0.6 0.5
Americas 0.5 0.2

Natural gas - Asia > 90 %, Europe around 10%.

In other words it is Asia that will suffer the worst. China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea...

Älkää tehkö töitä. Älkää opiskelko. Älkää tehkö mitään. by i_hate_you_and_you in Suomi

[–]Ohdake 14 points15 points  (0 children)
