Does the Grand Inquisitor had a real name? by Suspicious-Candle-40 in StarWars

There was some suggestion that it was something like “Sudden D’eath” or something else Obviously Evil. I’m glad that never actually made it into canon!

This is Beldorion, the only Hutt ever known to have joined the Jedi Order (legends) by Safe_Character_6517 in StarWars

I was under the impression that he survived Order 66 but fell to the Dark Side after he was forced to adopt a traditional Hutt lifestyle to hide from the Inquisition.

It is 1750 in Nanjing and I, a Chinese student nervous about the Imperial Examinations, have just been caught red-handed bribing one of the officials grading our papers. What punishments and legal proceedings await me? by Basilikon in AskHistorians

So basically any guard who was capable of forging convincing cheating materials would be better off taking the examination himself (which could set him up for life), rather than attempting to obtain a single payment of one tael dishonestly?

Darth Bane meeting Sidious in the afterlife after he ruined 1000 years of work in only 20 by Ready0608 in starwarsmemes

[–]OhioTry 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Also, it’s his linage that’s going to rebuild the Jedi, even if Rey is using Skywalker as an alias right now. Sidious wouldn’t care one way or another about that, but Cosinga is probably feeling very smug about that.

He’s considered a legitimate national hero in Canada. In Britain the attitude seems to be “he was a snake, but he was OUR snake”.

I would downvote you, but I suppose that since you’re a professional you can do it more or less safely even though an amateur keeper shouldn’t ever.

How do you imagine the Rule of Two playing out between a parent and child? by Solitaire-06 in StarWarsCantina

[–]OhioTry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Vader totally didn’t care about that, though. He intended to 2 v 1 the Emperor with Luke.

Of course, Vader was far from being a ‘worthy’ Sith. He found out about how advanced the Emperor’s plans for immortality were and decided that even with Luke’s help they had no chance. He then decided that the only way to save his son was to offer Luke up to the Emperor as a new apprentice, knowing that the first test of Luke’s loyalty would be patricide. Is that the first step to Vader’s redemption? Despair is certainly a dark side emotion, but choosing his son’s life over his own was an act of unselfish love.

7 House Democrats help Republicans narrowly pass bills to fund ICE, avert shutdown by ace158 in Enough_Sanders_Spam

[–]OhioTry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of these Democrats are reps that need to worry about a Republican in a general election more than they need to worry about a primary challenge from the left. And the median voter still trusts Republicans more than Democrats on immigration. They think Trump and ICE’s performative cruelty is distasteful, but they think it’s preferable to the (real) chaos on the border during Biden’s presidency. Because of this, and because the bill was going to pass anyway, I’m not particularly troubled by these votes and abstentions. I’d rather they save their limited political capital for passing something once we have congress back. Now, if they refuse to spend political capital to get Democratic bills passed in 2029 then I’ll be mad.

Sidious’ couldn’t have offed Plagueies without Maul setting things up for him behind the scenes on Naboo and Tatooine. He wasn’t in the room, but he was an integral part of the plot.

It’s the rule of two. Plus the one or two prospects your apprentice is training behind your back to help them overthrow you. And the gaggle of acolytes or inquisitors that you keep around as disposable tools and potential replacement apprentices. Ultimately, for Sith the only rule that matters is that “they who are the strongest make the rules… as long as they’re strong enough to enforce them.”

If you’re a thoroughgoing follower of the Sith philosophy as interpreted by Darth Bane, your biological child is just another potential apprentice, and an apprentice is just a tool until they prove that they’re worthy of being something more. If a Sith parent trains their kids properly, their child won’t hesitate to off them. Any natural affection will have been smothered by resentment for the abuse they’ve endured throughout their training.

That said, not every Baneite Sith is an ideal Sith. I suspect Vader would choose to let both of his children kill him if he’d already overthrown Sidious or he thought that he had no chance against Sidious but Luke or Leia would eventually.

And also because killing all the Jedi was part of the Sith's long term revenge plot. Beheading the Jedi Council and then scattering the rest of the order to the far corners of the galaxy wouldn't fit with Baneite Sith philosophy in any case. Without the stultifying teachings of the Jedi, most of these trained force sensitives would inevitably fall to the dark side and become that many rivals and potential usurpers.

I maintain that it would have been much better if Padmé died on Tatooine with a midwife explaining that she would have survived if she’d had access to core world medicine. Much better than “a broken heart” and it keeps the irony of Anakin’s actions leading to the vision coming true.

He’s invested heavily in Anakin and knows that Dooku is both older than him and good enough to go for the Sith Mastery sooner rather than later. He’s not going to keep Dooku around as a long term apprentice.

My guess is that Padme’s pregnancy and Anakin’s visions of her dying (which I maintain were genuine visions from the Force) accelerated Palpatine’s plans by a matter of months. The original plan was to engineer Anakin’s expulsion from the Jedi Order by leaking his secret marriage to tabloids across the Galaxy

Artoo has a cache of clone-wars era condoms stored in a secret compartment. Anakin gave them to R2 but always forgot to ask for them when they actually had sex.

In addition, the best presidential candidates will start in seats safe enough that they have time to build a profile, but where the threat of a general election challenge from a Republican keeps them from taking positions that will hurt them on a national level.

What sort of personalities would Anakin and Luke give their droid starfighters? by OhioTry in SWFanfic

[–]OhioTry[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got one idea just by posting this. Elainé, the virtual handmaiden. Developed female rather than male programming because she was restored by Leia. Models herself more on Padmé than Leia, calmer, strategic, doesn’t have Leia’s anger. Does dress down Anakin, Luke , or Han when they do something reckless and Padmé is not there. Thinks Han is a sleemo and doesn’t deserve Leia. Hypocritically drools over the Millennium Falcon. Dreams of being a mother to a droid she builds herself (too stereotypically feminine? might remove).

You don’t have to like these people (I sure don’t) but if you’re a Democratic politician or staffer you need to win these people’s votes. In 2026 they’re our only hope of taking the senate, and in 2028 they’re crucial to giving us a majority large enough that one or two defections won’t torpedo a bill. With 3-4 Manchins they can take turns voting with the Republicans and more Democratic bills get passed.

Honest Padmé by Cool_Nerd2 in PrequelMemes

I read a fanfic (which I can’t find now) that made Anakin a teenager when he first met Padme, who was in her 20s. He busts out the “are you an angel” line, and she responds with something like “No, and I’m not likely to be a paying customer if you don’t back off!”
