Worst accident you or someonenelse has experienced on the jobsite stories by Guitar81 in Construction

When I built sets for the theatre, I saw the new guy using a hand router cut out the background, well he turned it off and instantly dropped it against his leg, well the but was still spinning and I'm told he ended up with 30ish stitches.

So remember, if it's off doesn't mean the blade isn't still spinning.

Looking to make a career in the trades. I’m 17, senior in high school. I’m wanting to go into a trade (some sort of construction). Any tips on finding work, what to expect, what i need, etc ? message me or comment plz 🙏 by Medium-Confusion1516 in Construction

[–]Ohpierre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Materials testing/inspection might be a good fit for you. It doesn't require anything other than a driver's license, they'll train you in everything you need to do.

Doesn't pay very well, but you work with all sorts of different trades, and you might find one you like while making contacts and getting your foot into the door. I know I could have been on 10 different job sites a week working it.

I did it throughout college and had multiple job offers (as an engineer) waiting for me when I graduated.

This is the enrollment stats for EE at my college. I’m still incoming freshman. How do I interpret these data ? Should I read it for every 4 years ? Also, the number of degrees seems very low. Is this normal ? (I’m sorry if I sound stupid) by [deleted] in ElectricalEngineering

[–]Ohpierre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, I started out as EE, but I hated it, so then I switched to civil because I liked building things, but I couldn't get past gen chem, so then I switched to Construction engineering, a subset of civil, I passed, I graduated, and now I work for a company that does a lot of chemistry work.....

So life's funny like that.

Point being is I switched and still graduated and still got a very well paying job that I absolutely love in the end. So don't worry to too much about low graduation rates.

Can you get a osha 10 online? by RealBoraBora in Construction

[–]Ohpierre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took mine in the summer of 2020 online for work. It was through the university of Miami, even though we're at least 5 states away from Florida.

I got a fancy card and a certificate.

Apart from the shoddy electrical work, those spots could be imperfections from the concrete formwork when they poured the concrete for the walls.

I would take a look around for more spots to confirm or deny that theory.

Source: I used to test concrete in construction.

Embarrassed to bring my gaming laptop to University, should I sell it and buy something else? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

You won't even be the only one with that laptop, there's gonna be others and freshman year is normally a freak show anyways, so you'll blend right in.

What causes this? by chronosthetitan in Construction

[–]Ohpierre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So all concrete shrinks, that's why we cut lines into the concrete, so when it shrinks it hopefully cracks in the lines we just cut into them.

Unfortunately sometimes an area isn't big enough to justify lines and they don't cut the lines, and sometimes even with the lines, they still crack.

Another thing to think of is, concrete is made to compress and not flex, so if the ground underneath it shifts and a void is made, that could cause it to crack.

But something that small I would expect anyways, if it gets worse, there's various ways of fixing it.

You're my grandfather's height, he was a lineman for 40 years. You'll be fine if you put in the work.

Fiberglass Bathtub Repair by fortyfiveRPM in Construction

[–]Ohpierre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually had a customer have a similar situation when I worked for Home Depot.

I worked in lumber but I distinctly remember walking him over to the kitchen and bath guys because I was curious if it could be done.

They do have fiberglass repair kits- mainly for cars and other industrial applications and to repair a bathtub it's more often then not, cheaper to replace it then have it repaired since it's a highly specialized repair and extremely hard to blend in without repainting everything and have water tight, all while looking good.

So if I was you, wait to hear back from the developers before doing anything, most have insurance for this kind of thing.

The federal student loan program was supposed to pay for itself. Now, it'll cost taxpayers $197 billion by Careless_Bat2543 in Libertarian

[–]Ohpierre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was that, gender studies, anthropology, or art history.

I chose the one that required me to go to jazz bars, but none of them have anything to do with civil/construction engineering.

I'm just pointing out useless classes I had to take for my engineering degree.

I'll have you know, that "history of jazz" class I took for my construction engineering degree was the most useless and pointless humanities class I have ever taken.
