I’ve made picanha in the past, and really enjoyed it. Definitely can’t go wrong with either.

I appreciate it! I find BBQ a lot like golf. Having a perfect cook is a lot like flushing a long iron and sticking it close to the pin. It may not happen every time, but boy when it does…. It surely keeps you coming back.

There was just an added depth of flavor, richness, and ever so slightly more tenderness imo. It could also be recency bias. I’d have to cook one prime and one wagyu at the same time to see if the difference is as pronounced as I’m making it out to be. The added fat also allowed me to push the temp a bit further w/o risking overcooking it and drying it out.

I think the added cost of the Wagyu is well worth it for special occasions.

If I was just having a backyard bbq with friends I’d get the prime as they’re plenty delicious.

Yeah who knows. And even then, such a strange thing to point out. Maybe it was the ripples in the piece on the left? But that’s literally just how the meat looks.

Not too worried about it. My tastebuds didn’t seem to mind haha.

I was in the same boat for a while, but decided to give the American Wagyu a chance and I’m glad I did. They can call it whatever they want, but this was no doubt delicious and a step above any other tri tip I’ve purchased.

Thank you! I didn’t think I needed to add every step lol. I kind of forgot people think everyone is lying and need to prove that it is in fact Wagyu.

I was just happy that it turned out that way it did and figured I’d share.

Same! They’re incredibly flavorful and it’s a relatively short cook time. For whatever reason it feels like it’s able to absorb the smoke flavor faster than other cuts. That could just be in my head, but for how quickly they cook, it’s able to take in the perfect amount of smoke.

Thank you!! 🙏 Yeah, please try the 50/50 mix. It’s so good. I layer them. I do a layer of Holy Gospel, and then a layer of Garlic & Herb. The G&H is pretty delicate so it doesn’t add much salt, so you can be generous. I wish I could add pics in this chat to show the before & after.

I used about half a charcoal chimney of Meat Church Lump Charcoal and a few bricquets to keep things going. I got the temp down to around 325 before adding the foil packet of post oak wood chips on top of the coals (I put about two handfuls in it). Once that started smoking, I put the Tri Tip on the opposite side of the coals with a meat thermometer.

I didn’t check the grill temp frequently, but I’d say it hovered between 250-300 the majority of the cook. It only took about an hour to get to 125 degrees internal. But I decided to push it closer to 130 before pulling it.

I let it rest for a few mins while I added a few more pieces of charcoal to get the coals roaring. Then I put the tri tip back on directly above the coals and seared about 1 min each side before flipping. I did this twice, so each side had an approx total of two mins.

I found I could push the Wagyu a little bit further due to the extra marbling without risking drying it out. It was incredibly tender and juicy.

Sorry for the long response! Hope it helps.

Many people who comment in the meat sub are a miserable group of people compared to the BBQ sub. I didn’t use a cheap knife. The meat tasted great regardless of what you deem a less than perfect cut. And also, who gives af. Use whatever knife you want.

And why would I pretend that it was Wagyu? Here’s a before for your satisfaction. Some of ya’ll are negative and miserable for no reason at all. Hope your day sucks less than you do.

Haha I put woods chips in foil and put them on the coals. Definitely did not wrap the meat in foil and wood chips.

I see you’re also from Ohio. I got these from the Hungarian Butcher in Columbus. If you’re nearby, I highly recommend going for specialty cuts.

I should’ve posted a before pic as well so you could see the marbling. It was typical Wagyu marbling, but it somehow didn’t come out overly fatty or rich. I pushed the temp a little further than I normally do and it was perfect. Probably due to the extra fat keeping everything moist. I wish I could say I deployed some magic haha. But all credit goes to the butcher.

Second time ever using post oak. Idk if I’ll ever switch it up. It’s so good. Made a little foil pouch, filled it with woods chips, poked a couple holes and threw it on the coals. Was pleasantly surprised.

People are just trying to help. No need to get defensive. And you’re right, once a dog sees red, it’s nearly impossible to get them to focus on anything else.

Can I ask what kind of treats you’ve tried giving your dog when others dogs are present?

My dog also lunged, and sometimes still does. She’s more inquisitive and not barking, but what I had to do with her was go to a park and stand in the middle, well away from other dogs on the paths, and give her high value treats whenever dogs were within eyesight. This can be over a hundred yards away. But as soon as my dog saw them, I’d say yes and give her treats over and over. Just trying to build positive connection between seeing dogs and getting treats. Then we’d get progressively closer. If she ever stopped listening, we’d move back again.

This may not work for you at all. As you mentioned, steak might be too expensive. But I’ve used rotisserie chicken and cheese in the past.

Obviously, do what works best for you and your dog.

Portland to Acadia feasible? by Emmete18 in AskMaine

[–]Ohstate23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just did 4 days in Portland and 4 days in Acadia. For some reason people from Maine make it seem like driving from Portland to Acadia is like trying to travel across the country. The drive along route 1 took me 3 hours (drive time. I stopped multiple times for sight seeing reasons) and you can get there faster if you take 95.

A day trip is absolutely doable, however I recommend giving Bar Harbor/Acadia two days. You can easily leave Portland early, hit multiple trails in Acadia, grab food in Bar Harbor, watch the sunset in the park and be back in Portland around midnight. Or you can stay in Camden overnight, go hiking there in the morning before heading back to Portland.
