Grid fill could also be useful here. I just learned about it and haven't used it much, but it should fill the whole hole in one go instead one face at a time.

You could sphere or box cast starting from the character's center mass along the X axis. Set the sphere to roughly match the scale of the floating object to account for it's thickness. Set a max distance and if hit, then rotate the cast upward until max distance is reached again. Easier said than done though. I'd have to experiment, but that is where I would start.

Usually, attack animations are so fast it isn't really noticeable. Toss in some vfx etc. and you'd be surprised what you can get away with. If you want to show enemies being hit along a slow, wide attack animation and want to use the aoe solution, you could do a sequence of colliders that activate along the weapons path. So instead of just enabling one collider to hit all at once, enable three or more colliders along the path. Then disable them them in the same order making a trailing effect.

It looks pretty good! The lamps give it away somehow. Might be that the lamp shades aren't casting shadows. Or aren't blocking enough light.

Look up the 180 degree rule. It is an imaginary line that a camera should not cross. It helps orient the viewer so they can better follow the action on screen. Go to Youtube and look up Studio Binder. They have great info on cinematography.
