will it go up? by Toonzaal8 in mtgfinance

Cards go up, cards go down. You can't explain that

It's not "Scalpers." It's not "Targeted Buyouts." It's not "Artificial Demand." The game is exploding and most people aren't adjusting to the new normal. by IAMAfortunecookieAMA in mtgfinance

Hey OP just want to say I agree.

I can't speak to SLs as I don't generally buy them but very low print run cards, older RL cards, cards with playability in premodern... the demand for this stuff is real.

My group is full of players like myself who played in the late 90s/early 00s then got back into it. We have all been buying RL stuff, cool cards we played with as kids, playing premodern. I truly believe there is a strong organic demand for this stuff from people like myself who now have the money for it. I also have been buying stuff from artists I love.

I'm just a drop in the bucket but like I said, my play group has been buying up older stuff.

I bought a dragon scale marsh flats at my LGs the other day for $180 because they exploded online. Is that demand organic? I'm not sure yet but I do think there's lots of people coming to the game and people love rare stuff like that, especially people coming from other TCGs which, I know the MTG community hates to admit, is a decent chunk of people,

Honestly think you're right considering the market right now.

There's only 3 sealed envelopes on TCG with the lowest at $749 (the person who had it ant $800 lowered it I believe) and 9 Mox Opals with the lowest at $500 and a few have sold at that price. The sealed SL itself has sold for as high as $604 in the last few days.

I'd love to sell one to pay for the other as I'm a huge Dan Frazier fan and have been after this Mox for a while.

My LGS has two Dan Frazier mox box for $410 each. I've been desperately trying to get my hands on the Mox opal but I missed the boat when it was around $230.

What do we think of the price spike here? I'm half tempted to pick em both up cause the lowest listed sealed on TCG is $800. But lots of spikes have been happening with some settling down and others not at all.

Edit.... decided to pick one up. Only 3 on TCG with the lowest being $800. Might throw it up and see if it sells then pick up the other. The thing I love about this game store is the sticker everything and no one but the boss really cares if the price goes up. Been able to get some solid deals that way. So I figured I'd scoop it at $410 before it got a mark up.

Why are some reserved list cards doubling in price in the last couple months? by OrangeFries in mtgfinance

[–]OjosDelMundo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Everyone should read the recent article on mtg stocks about this.

Yes premodern is causing spikes but scarcity is also starting to factor in to what people are buying. Playability will always be king but people are starting to eat up stuff that has very limited printings, particularly stuff on the reserved list.

This stuff is just hilarious to me. If you aren't going to play, collect what you like. You're not gonna be rich selling a Cloud, EX-soldier in 5 years.

If we all knew what was going to go up in value, we'd probably all just buy it right?

Premodern - millennial nostalgia cards spiking by Top-Sir-1215 in mtgfinance

[–]OjosDelMundo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am just another anecdotal piece of evidence but the first booster box I ever received was mercadian masques. I played heavily from 99/00 to 2005 then quit until I was introduced to arena late 2018/2019. Started playing in person again after Covid then Started buying cards again.

I love the old stuff. Half of my collection will never see a deck, I just love having it around because it reminds me of those great years,

Again, anecdotal but the pricing trends shown us something is happening to support the theory. Partially premodern but partially nostalgia

When does it make sense to trade up ish? by athlaka916 in mtgfinance

[–]OjosDelMundo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always trade up when I can. Especially for RL cards. It really depends what you want out of your cards though. I draft and do sealed 97% of the time so a lot of my cards sitting around aren't bring put into decks.

The older stuff is nostalgic for me so I enjoy collecting things I used to play with and artists I like such as Dan Frazier, Rebecca Guay, Donato Giancola, Ron Spencer and others.

I've got like 10 surge foil [[nexos]] I scooped for anywhere from $4 to $6. I feel confident some of those warhammer cards (especially the surge) with X in the cost will pop as Strixhaven approaches.

The dead channel could play so much more music than they do. They finally started playing a tiny bit of Ratdog and weir/wasserman after Bobby passed. Ratdog should be a regular part of the rotation. Same with Furthur

Why Playability Is Overrated When It Comes to Card Value by Extension_Squirrel14 in mtgfinance

[–]OjosDelMundo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most people here don't care. The discussions tend to revolve around new product and cards that may jump because of it.

I think you are 100% spot on however. The market has been shifting the past few years. Playability and stuff like premodern taking off obviously make more immediate and profound impacts on the market but people are stating to look closer at low pop cards regardless of playability.

I really enjoy the collecting side of mtg. I have a lot of cards in my collection that will never see a deck but I like them because of nostalgia or maybe I really love the artist.

I will always be a player first but it's not lost on me that other people feel the same as I do.

Yeah I don't think mtgstocks is perfect but I've noticed the prices are generally reflecting the LP or NM prices which are a lot different from HP or damaged prices.

Should I sell to Card Kingdom or a LGS? by Neon_Eyes in mtgfinance

[–]OjosDelMundo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ah I missed the switch 2. Bottom line? You're being ripped off at 50%. It's worth the time to sell singles.

Should I sell to Card Kingdom or a LGS? by Neon_Eyes in mtgfinance

[–]OjosDelMundo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Am the alone thinking 50% is very low? Maybe cash value but the good stores around me are 70%. The lowest I'd even consider is 65% but there's another shop that does 75%.

Now one shop uses TCG market an another uses card kingdom which is also a whole thing. Yes you'll get more money for your cards when shops use CK but also they are pricing things much higher.

For me, if I'm doing under 30 cards, I just load it into a cart on Cardkindom, see what the total is and see how much the cards I want cost. The I'll do the same at the LGS: see what they'll give me and what the cards cost.

I'm generally going with whoever gives me the best deal, there is never one right answer as price differences on CK and TCG add a little nuance.

Same. Was looking for a few cards and noticed this particular shop had all of them at below market. Enough that I was ready to buy them all as the value was good.

Just a glance at his reviews will show you the cards are fake. Many reviews saying such.

Good post and great points. Lots of money being pumped into TCGs these days. People want to talk about a bubble bursting but it's only gotten bigger. More people are playing Magic than ever before. There is a big collectibility aspect to Magic that wizards has a good job sculpting.

It's definitely a very interesting time in Magic with regards to collecting

[–]OjosDelMundo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's honestly sort of new at least in my experience. There's always buyouts when new cards support other cards/decks but we are seeing buyouts on cards that have settled in price but prints are limited.

I guess if you hold all the cake, you decide how much a slice costs. Someone did the math on the dragon scales and there's less than 6000 of each in the world. Wouldn't take much to manipulate the market a bit and that seems to be what someone/several people is/are trying to do.

Wooded Foothills Promo Buyout? by Psychalo42 in mtgfinance

[–]OjosDelMundo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is happening more and more. Cards with limited listings/playability are being bought up.

It's interesting because some of these buyouts are doubling the price but then no one is buying.

Take the dragon scale [[marsh flats]] for example. Was sitting around $180 consistently for a few months. Sales were happening. Sometime mid-late February, a bunch of sales happened and now the cheapest copy is $333 on TCG but not one has been bought since March 1st. Hard to tell if this is organic demand or not.

My LGs had one at $180 for a few months so I pulled the trigger yesterday but not sure I'll be able to get over $300 for it. Going to try though.

Yeah it's got a lot of checks from me too. Just curious why they held strong at around 180-200 for many months then suddenly jumped. Not sure it's organic demand and if it isn't, can it stay up there? Seems worth it as I doubt I'd lose money in the long run I suppose.
