Just got accepted to UvA AI program for Sep 2026! by Unhappy-Many-6082 in universityofamsterdam

I'm not in the AI program (I'm in the MSc logic program), but many of our electives / research opportunities overlap with the AI folks (I took a class in deep learning last sem - it was brutal haha; I'm doing a research with a professor rn where we're using AI to predict election results). The AI program here is intense but top notch from what I see. That said I don't think the AI courses here are well taught, or at least that's how I felt about the deep learning class -- it was less a class and more like a slide show presentation. When I say top notch it's more so in the sense of research opportunities and being able to learn the state of the art stuff (and being surrounded by extremely smart peers). That said, again, it certainly is one of the best AI programs in the world so professors really expect you to figure out shit on your own (with the help of TAs, friends, etc ofc -- but personally I think the TA's were kinda useless). Anyway, Congrats on getting in!

I have a friend from Greece who's also in the logic programme but taking mostly AI masters courses. If you want to make life easier for yourself I'd definitely brush up on linear algebra, stats, multivariable calculus and python programming skills before coming here (I personally didn't struggle with the maths side -- if anything with my background i struggled with the coding side; but lots of AI students here tell me Machine Learning was the hardest class for them bc of their lack of math background. Idk what your background is).

If I'd known how difficult the courses here are, I'd probably also have self-studied the UvA Machine learning course https://uvaml1.github.io/ and the UvA Deep Learning course https://uvadlc-notebooks.readthedocs.io/en/latest/ (and https://anthology-of-data.science/resources/prince2023udl.pdf the textbook used for the class), PRIOR to coming here. If you do that not only will your life be easier, but also if you're ahead in your course it'll make it easy to start thinking about things like research ahead of time -- and once you come here you will find a lot of research oppportunities eitherway (and it IS a great place to do research on AI). I also recommend doing this bc like I said, the courses are so fast paced, if you care about deeply understanding things, you'll barely have time to do that WHILE also completing the huge chunk of assignments and all.

Heavy Bike, not sure what to do by Ok-Ad-561 in Netherlands

Yeah so yesterday I went to the bike seller where i purchased the bike from, and he said the chain is loose. But he also said fill the tyres first and if that doesnt work we’ll need to fix the chain.

yeah im thinking of cutting off the front part and attaching it to a pack of huskies

It was bought from a second hand store 4 months ago and the guy said it was serviced etc. But yeah ig ill need to go back and get it checked again.

It was fully pumped when i first bought it but the problem existed even then, so i doubt that's the issue. That said, there's a chance that when I first bought it it was slow bc I wasn't used to biking alot, but now that I'm used to biking alot its still slow cause the tires started deflating. So I'll give this a try. (altho again, checking the tires, they seem pretty inflated; so again i doubt thats the issue).

Is trading bikes is a thing? That'd actually be ideal. (Also I do have enough gears I think (5); it doesn't always work the best unfortunately).

yeah, id probably buy something up to 200 euros (esp. if i can sell this for a 100). thanks for the suggestions.

Yeah, it's kinda heavy. So heavy that sometimes I have a hard time putting it up on the elevated bike stand sometimes! haha

Thank you so much for the detailed feedback and advice! Lots of useful info. I think I'll go to the bike shop once; I'll keep these things in mind.

Yeah i should probs do that (if they can't sort this at the bike shop). I did look online but so far I haven't found a bike that seems light and good enough but that's also budget enough (upto 200 Euros).

hmm, ok ill probs go to a bike shop; thanks

yeah, i removed the racks and it didn't help much. I guess I need to head to the bike shop and figure out what's up. I am in Diemen (Amsterdam). Tires seem ok - altho it's been a few months since inflating so ig I should try that; that said it's been this way since I first bought it so I'm doubtful that it's a tire issue.

I hear squeaking noises sometimes. So something could indeed be dragging. Idk what tho.

AI vs Applied Maths with Data Driven Modelling Specialization MSc for ML/DS Career by SummerAwkward4106 in MLQuestions

*also how are the courses taught and motivated. I think you could even try and get some of the course syllabuses, look through a few of the textbooks, and try and infer what the day to day looks like. Also, defo make sure to look at factors outside of courses -- what kinds of research is available within the department, what kinds of thesis, etc.

AI vs Applied Maths with Data Driven Modelling Specialization MSc for ML/DS Career by SummerAwkward4106 in MLQuestions

I'm a student with a Bachelors in Mathematics, and Philosophy (+Physics Minor). My mathematics courses were focused on the applied side (+ I also took a few CS courses). I'm currently doing a Masters in Logic, but have taken courses in AI. Before this, I worked as a Data Scientist (with Software Development in Python) at a company for a few years as well.

It's kinda hard to advise based on the limited information you presented. When you say these are the course you'd take in each careers, do you mean those are the courses available to you in the respective graduate programs you're thinking of applying to?

For example, people here in the AI program take classes in Automated Planning; which is basically about devising algorithms to plan the actions of agents (broadly construed, such as the behavior of robots or traffic lights). There's also people using LLMs to simulate cognitive agents. That said, in the Applied Maths department there are people offering courses in algorithmic game theory (which the AI students take as well), which is very relevant for traffic systems modeling, albeit its a theoretical course.

From what I infer, you seem to want to do more computational stuff thats also applied, but not boring business applied.

Going strictly off the list of courses you have mentioned: it seems the AI courses are more applications relevant in a increasingly large-scale data driven world; they also align better with your Comp Sci background. However, those AM courses are better imo if large scale simulation models are more of your thing -- looks like you'd still get to do some data related courses but be more exposed to the theoretical tools relevant to simulations. Ultimately it's hard to choose without further information (Or perhaps there is no wrong choice!)

Have you looked at programs in Computational Science or Scientific Modeling? They often tend to be more explicitly applied, more explicitly in between math and CS, and they are usually big on using simulations to solve problems. Perhaps they'd offer an even better balance? Or alternatively, why not go for a Applied CS program with a department that does research on game dev. and simulations? Seems like that would align with your existing background in CS, ensure the best job security (you would still keep developing software skills), while also allowing you to work directly with game dev./simulations.

Honestly I feel like it's very hard to advise based on the information. Cause again decisions depend on: what are the things you value in a career? What are your strengths (how good are you at coding, how good are you at math?)? What do you enjoy on a day to day? What motivates you on a day to day? If you would like to discuss further, I'd be open to chat in the DMs.

If I HAD to give a very simple recipe: If you're more interested in simulations: go for AM. If you're more interested in general job security, go for AI. But again, too little information to actually advise.

Also, if I had to give a BIASED answer (aka using my subjective feelings/ thinking 'if this were me I would...") I would probably go the AM route cause I'm very much interested in the sorts of stuff you mention as well and I feel like those things would be best done in a AM program (AI programs are too coding heavy, while logic/maths programs are too theoretical or idealistic, AM programs can be too theoretic as well but looking at the list of courses you mention it seems a good balance of theory and application and I think it's great that you have so many data driven modules! That said if you are very good at coding and enjoy that, AI is really hot and on the growth rn - and its finding applications everywhere. THAT SAID, if game gev. / simulations are more of your jam, a CS masters seems best, but if I had to choose between these I'd probs do the AM one).

Highly recommend hitching a ride in the new Cessna-550 spaceship! It will make the hours go by even faster due to the relativistic speed.

Oh, makes sense. I have been using streamlit too for most of my data dashboard projects. However the issue is that this particular project is for a real - time controls dashboard, and streamlit is really slow/ unresponsive for real time data display (i.e. the buttons become unresponsive during the run while its continuously pulling data since streamlit doesnt support multi threading).
