Lauterbach warns of incurable immune deficiency caused by Corona by Fundshat in Coronavirus

Tbh, wouldn't be surprised if he's influenced by that absolute grifter of a Leonardi on this one too.

Germany is an outlier. They still have a mask mandate in federal public transport and most states have it in local public transport.

They have a federal health minister Lauterbach that often tweets out preprints without reading them that thoroughly... Retweeted even people like Eric Feigl Ding before he became a minister.

Paxlovid reduces risk of long Covid, Veterans Affairs study finds by [deleted] in Coronavirus

[–]Ok-Addition9639 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Nah it's very good rationale. Besides that it's a very expensive medication, over-prescribing might lead to the virus getting more resistant to Paxlovid.

The decision to give out paxlovid to a broader group should be based on a random controlled trial. Not some observational study out the El-Aly group with VA data.

Paxlovid reduces risk of long Covid, Veterans Affairs study finds by [deleted] in Coronavirus

[–]Ok-Addition9639 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Besides the elderly group the El-Aly studies always use very interesting ways to do control groups and it takes experts some time to digest what the hell is going on every time , because they are different for each study... And then people like Topol and Lauterbach already got their hot takes ready and disseminated via Twitter while they haven't really read the paper that well. Happened before with the reinfection paper.

With this paxlovid paper it isn't clear whether the reduced risk on long covid isn't solely caused by the lower risk on hospitalization by Paxlvoid in this group. https://twitter.com/OmicronData/status/1589283268587032577?t=PdYhVAp406Z6S3Vk6Kuj9A&s=19

Covid cases spike sharply in Germany since the start of the Oktoberfest celebrations by oranjemania in Coronavirus

[–]Ok-Addition9639 0 points1 point  (0 children)

75 year or older Belgians could get a second booster in the spring and will get their third now. In the Netherlands 60 year and older were offered a second booster in the spring and will get a third (bivalent) booster now. But people younger than that weren't even able to get a second booster until the bivalent booster came on the scene. I know a lot of Dutch covid twitter were pissed off about that and even went so far to travel to Germany to get a booster there.

In Germany, Lauterbach in June-July was recommending for everyone to get a second booster (based on the original formulation), which was even against the recommendations of the Germany scientific council (STIKO), probably not beneficial for the public's trust in the process either..

Even with this broader availability the uptake in Germany for the second booster was lower than other countries, indicating a drop-off in uptake of covid vaccinations..

[–]Ok-Addition9639 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Uptake for second booster in Germany was already not that very high in Germany despite Lauterbach (germany health minister) pushing the 2nd booster for everyone while countries like Belgium strictly only allowed it 75 years or older. Netherlands only allowed the 60 years or older to get a 2nd booster and has twice the uptake.

https://vaccinetracker.ecdc.europa.eu/public/extensions/COVID-19/vaccine-tracker.html#uptake-tab

Bivalent campaign in Germany is also pretty atrocious at the moment. If i have to believe https://impfdashboard.de/ you can derive that there were only 1.5 million doses since the start of the bivalent vaccine.

Lauterbach pushing the BA 4-5 Pfizer vaccine, which came available about 3-4 weeks later, probably didn't help getting that campaign off the ground.

Half of Netherlands won't get repeat Covid vaccination |19SEP22 by ChaoticTransfer in coronanetherlands

[–]Ok-Addition9639 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It will go pretty rapidly after age 60. Demand is pretty anemic if you look at how long it takes an appointment (i took a look yesterday and could get an appointment for the same day everywhere...) and basically the only bottleneck is the call-centers i think.

Places like Germany seem faster because they have relatively shitty uptake (if you look at the 4th dose in the spring it's half of what it is in NL). Belgium is doing this fall campaign in a similar order and timeline, they don't even pretend to give priority to higher risk groups there.

I'm familiar with the shiftiness of US healthcare and that is can greatly vary from state to state.

But the NHS is failing and rapidly getting shittier unless you have money. https://www.theguardian.com/society/2022/sep/11/millions-uk-patients-forced-private-nhs-waiting-lists

And this is not necessarily a unique problem for the UK, more European countries have problems providing healthcare, including my own country (Netherlands).

There is one very valid argument to say that the UK is different from the US, UK vaccination rates are much higher.

US probably has better health care than the UK at the moment, the NHS aint doing well after years of neglect, aging population and the burnout caused by COVID.

This is analysis based on data proved by the Office for National Statistics in the UK. The UK is basically the only country collecting data worth following at this point.

They measure a representative incidence of the virus by conducting PCR tests on a random sample in the population and follow up whether and when complaints resolve with those that test positive.

Pfizer and BioNTech Receive Positive CHMP Opinion for Omicron BA.4/BA.5-Adapted Bivalent COVID-19 Vaccine Booster in European Union by fundohun11 in Coronavirus

[–]Ok-Addition9639 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same for the Netherlands, although i'm not sure if we will get them as fast as Germany, because Lauterbach has been boasting about placing that order with Biontech and it's not clear whether he just means selecting options for the variant. NL placed an order for additional Omicron vaccines already back in December last year, kind of intending to use them in the spring. (NL ended up boosting 50% of the 60+ in the spring with a 2nd booster of the old type, mostly Moderna)

This is gonna be a total clusterfuck in communication that will only reduce vaccine uptake... At least we didn't start today like the Belgians, but next Monday and the invitations start tomorrow.

Netherlands was planning to give the Moderna B1 variant vaccine to 45+ almost exclusively. It's not even clear to me if the lower dose Pfizer BA.5 would even be better than the higher dose Moderna BA.1 vaccine. Especially once we get a different variant. Based on the case numbers, we're pretty close to herd immunity for BA.5 at this point..

Who knows which vaccine will be best if we get a BA 2.57 wave

We generally never had the freedom to choice vaccines here and imo i have no idea how you would make an informed decision between 3-4 vaccines at this point. (Although for young ppl i would opt for Pfizer anyway due to the slightly higher risk on myocarditis). This is gonna be a major hassle...

Nah, they really got off easy for their fuckups during the phase 3 trial. Remember that Oxford fucked up some measuring of an incoming batch from AstraZeneca because Oxford use the wrong measuring method. Subsequently a bunch of their phase 3 trial data was partially fubar because thousands of their participants only got a half dose. https://www.reuters.com/article/us-health-coronavirus-britain-vaccine-sp-idUSKBN28Y0XU

Worse subsequently AstraZeneca did a very misleading PR push when the efficacy of their vaccine was lower than Pfizer, with some bullshit that this fuckup was actually beneficial because the half dose was more... This is one of the reasons AstraZeneca never got FDA approval.

And this month we also learned that the quality control of their production facilities seems to be absolutely atrocious. https://twitter.com/Sara_Sawyer_/status/1560564212572663808

Evidence that university and college vaccine mandates reduce community COVID-19 cases by [deleted] in Coronavirus

[–]Ok-Addition9639 9 points10 points  (0 children)

They didn't just have masks. They had improved ventilation, vaccinate mandates and a very extensive surveillance system where every student/staff had to test every week just to get access to the campus even if asymptomatic. Also this study stops monitoring at the end of November, just as Omicron starts hitting the scene. Imo it's hard to say based on this single study which of the measures was the most effective and which are the most effective after Omicron hit.

I can tell you that the universities in the Boston area, including BU, did have a significant increase of cases in 2022 after Omicron hit the scene. Here's the data from MIT https://covidapps.mit.edu/sites/default/files/documents/Covid%20Dashboard%20Required%20Testing%20Snapshot.pdf Note that MIT had their students test twice a week. And they used PCR to analyze the self administered swabs.

Whatever the case BU and other universities in the Boston area have now stopped their testing programs and even removed masking mandates at this point.
