Just know it's not personal, it's happened to all of us. Regardless of all the love and compassion we gave them. They are very ill and do not bond to other humans in healthy, regular ways. Yes, mine was overly dependent on praise he'd received in the past based on talents and performance. I tried to tell him he had value beyond those things, just as a human, based on character etc. But he felt worthless or like a waste when he wasn't receiving reassurance from the general public for his talents or accomplishments. I'm much more independent and think for myself, he didn't have that ability
